Players usually don't dive like this either though, and it really depends on the kind of competition they're playing in. For example Atletico used diving tactics against Chelsea in the Champions League and the ref was having none of it. If you don't even try to keep going but rather theatrically dive then you can't complain if you don't get the pen. Should've tried to stay on your feet before diving. That's the attitude the ref had in that game, and most neutral viewers said it was very refreshing and a brilliant performance from the ref, I didn't even see many complaints because when you're playing unfair then you deserve it when it goes wrong. I don't think this could ever be a penalty in the premier league and english cup football, it could be a pen in the champions league depending on the ref, if it's a good ref he might let them keep playing especially since Robben obviously doesn't want or try to stay on his feet here. I think the refs don't tolerate much contact in national games so it can definitely be a pen here. When it comes to VAR the decision would still be left to the ref, he would just get a better opportunity to see every angle of what happened. I'd say it's a 50:50 at best, and I think every single great ref would let them keep playing because you can tell that Robben is diving for the pen so we'll never know if the contact would have made him fall or not. If you don't try to stay on your feet then how can we tell if you would've been able to keep going? Using this logic, if you dive you make us unable to see if it was a clear pen or not, so if you make the decision to dive you generally don't deserve the pen because you made your choice.

Woah you need to calm down there mate. The reason they don't call a penalty is because the ball isn't in play yet it's sitting on the corner. They aren't aloud to call a penalty on a ball that is not in the box or in play. They can only stop and tell the player to calm down or to retake the corner if he called it right as the corner was taken. Parodox is right he did exaggerate big time but to say it was a penalty could go either way. A ref has to make a split second decision. Just because you don't like that decision doesn't mean you have to come on here spewing your bullshit at a person saying what they believe. Regarding the corner, I had replied to someone before who said that any touching on the 16 metre square area is cause for penalty. I replied by saying that this is non sense because then there would be hundreds of penalties each games since there is a loooot of touching going on during corners. Then you said during corner the ball is not into play, but I think this is false because a corner is not only the process of kicking the corner but also involves the ball getting into the play after the corner is kicked towards the other players. Besides, and this was actually the most important point, is that there was NO touching at all! Robben is a classic schwalbe king, diving like a dolphin king. This is a true fact, open your eyes, this has nothing to do with choosing mexican or netherlands side. Sure, Marquez steps on Robben’s foot but he steps on the very end of it, he is most definitely still able to lift it and keep running. Also, you could argue that Robben’s right foot was blocked by Marquez after his left was blocked. But this doesn’t matter as he still has the option to run with his right foot since it’s able to land on the ground, but it is NEVER a penalty, because he decided to dive and exaggerate his fall. Instead of running, he chose to fall in such a puny way. There’s no way this player still gets praise for his style of play when he’s done this kind of thing in a World Cup.

I still believe it’s technically a penalty, perhaps even within the knowledge that he could continue the run. It’s hard to determine for a referee and causing the antics is perhaps just enough. I don’t think it’s not an immoral penalty. I’m from the Netherlands and if I were in Mexican shoes I would want to nuke the Netherlands as well. But rules are rules and we did had a better team than Mexico. Mexico dominated the first half of that match but the Netherlands the second half. It’s not like Mexico was highly likely to become world champion but lost their advantage in the last seconds of the game. They stood 1 - 1 against an overheated but continuously attacking Netherlands that was seriously denied an actual penalty sooner in the game when Robben was fouled. Of course he made a theater out of that too but there was a penalty due earlier in the game. The Netherlands was already runner-up and would defied Costa Rica and Brazil to eventually make it to the third place, like I said: it was a better team

black plague but when you stick your foot out like that and the play is going real life speed, which is very fast, the ref will almost always call a penalty. There is no VAR to help you out here. Marquez was being very reckless sticking his foot out like that, he was taking a very big risk. You can’t do that inside the penalty box as a defender, but Marquez did it anyways and paid the price.

Whether it was a penalty or not is debatable but still an inexcusable loss for México. Mexico had Holland against the ropes after the 1-0 but Herrera chose to remove Dos Santos who was wrecking havoc on the Dutch, and play defensively. The Dutch were able to come at them with everything and this happened. If you let the other team attack, you make yourself vulnerable to scrambles like these happening inside your box. Herrera made this gamble and lost.

As a mexican I can say there was a bit of a contact. All national teams worked hard to get there not only Mexico (and Mexico even got to the World Cup due to USA defeating Panama and not by their effort), and this was nothing compared to the last minute penalty that got Greece into the quarter-finals against Ivory Coast, that was obvious, but nobody gave a damn.
