I thought I'm hearing an Aussie, so I listen again, ...good onya, Gary. I see why you have the bottle brush, Kangaroo paws, bananas, pawpaw/papaya, and Queensland canna. You made me smile. I'm rooting for you two, mate. Though, you and I know what 'root' means to us Aussies LOL 'Barracking' doesn't sound funny but the Americans get it LOL I'm an Islander kiwi (Cook Islands) living in Adelaide, South Australia. I'm in a Temperate zone from you and Robbie over there. I thoroughly enjoy the simple tips you two share on your channel. It's true gardening doesn't have to be hard and expensive. I came from a grower's background. I have a small garden going in my front and backyard. I mainly grow in the ground but have some stuff in containers too. As I'm getting older, I do lazy methods too from no-dig' to planting in cardboard boxes. I have fruit trees and berries too. I'm still adding to my food forest :) Gary, do you have a demo video on how you set up your strawberry moat and details on the solar pump? I'm thinking of growing some taro but my current situation is too dry for them to grow healthy. Cheers to you and Robbie!

Wonderful concept and I wish it would work here in Massachusetts, but we get torrential rain storms that would flood both containers. I'd love to have this system because when we leave to visit family, the garden looks after it's water needs. Simply brilliant. Thank you for sharing.
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy5 жыл бұрын
Gary responding. Thank you. I will mention this in the next video. The rim of the smaller center pool is set higher than the rim of the larger pool. The small pool has holes in the bottom sides. If it rains any excess water flows through the woodchips into the larger pool. If the larger pool overfills the water simply spills out into my raised bed. That water is like woodchip compost tea and will fertilize the plants in my raised bed. Flooding could occur if the holes got blocked. Woodchips are free draining and only hold what they can absorb.

You've outdone yourself. I noticed right away you made escape ladders for the little critters. I'm guessing the pump does not get debris because of the tulle. My solar pumps always get clogged and don't last very long for me. I stopped purchasing them but I may give them another try. I love the fact that this is very inexpensive but... I have to ask... can the kiddie pools be recycled? Last, the mosquito fish like to hang out near the pump because it creates oxygen.
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy5 жыл бұрын
Gary responding. There is no recycling number on the pool so I would say probably no. You're right the fish do gulp air but would prefer the oxygenated water near the pump.
@justbeachy20315 жыл бұрын
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy I don't want to take up your precious time with my comments but since you mentioned the fish gulping oxygen, you might consider adding a few water plants or another pump. I lost 11 of my 20 year old koi fish due to a waterfall slow down. I learned a lot about creating oxygen and having a backup if that were to happen again but it wont. Our koi guy said if I ever see them hanging out near the waterfall or gulping for air, they need more oxygen. A lot depends on the size or amount of the fish. They could be fine without a pump running as long as there are not too many fish. I'm glad to add a little piece to your wealth of knowledge.

You could call it the gator garden! Or the swamp! Chock FULL of every nutrient you could probably name and probably numerous nutrients nobody could name plus, no gators!! Oooh, I would LOVE to forage in the swamp! If not for those darn gators. They just sort of mosey around in Florida. Plenty of food in the swamp so they just sort of take nice, leisurely walks around town and sun themselves at the water hazards on the golf course. Darnedest thing I ever saw but so awesome that folks mostly just let them be and go wherever they want. They're not hungry, apparently, so they just stroll around to see what's going on I guess. It would be really cool if they'd inform you when they're going to be out and about so you could sneak into their environment and forage around...of course, if there's one, there's probably 20 others so that might not work...

Robbie and Gary, I want to do this. I have a level piece of concrete that I wanted to do this but a neighbor told me you can't grow strawberries in containers as they need to shoot their roots in dirt. Will this work on a concrete patio. The rest of my yard is hilly and very hard to manage. when it rains, all the soil washed down the hill when I grow in the hill side.
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy5 жыл бұрын
Gary responding. Yes this will work on any flat surface. Strawberry plants are sold and grown in containers using potting soil and are also grown Hydroponically. Sometimes information is passed around until it becomes conventional wisdom. I like to experiment. Sometimes doing things different works, sometimes it fails. Then it becomes my personal experience.
@donnalutheran63355 жыл бұрын
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy They seem to be doing better than they had in years past. Some years we get lots of rain and other years none. I have two strawberry beds now that have been struggling for two years. I'm picking the flowers this year and just trying to get them to spread and be healthy. They really picked up when I put the Starbucks coffee grounds in with them. Most of my containers are homemade potting soil with lots of amendments. I want to move to using our kitchen scraps now. I have a pool with lots of peat moss and pine needs and old lettuce and rotten bananas buried in it. LOL

Looks very aesthetically appealing. Great job Garry! Just one question (hope you don't think I'm too dumb). How do you actually set up your wicking beds? ??? I’ve read where PBA is in kiddie pools. Even those that say it’s PBA free there’s still leeching in the plastic especially after the plastic heats up. I would probably look for a”All green” type of plastic pool or consider a harder plastic.
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy5 жыл бұрын
Gary responding. Thank you. I do evaluate Hazards verses Benefits. My first pond is made from black PVC. I would prefer to set all my ponds up that way. I haven't seen a recycling number on any of the pools that I have looked at. All plastic will leach something. My thoughts are, so far the fish are living and breeding well. Fish are sensitive to toxins. Anything negative is diluted by the volume of water and filtered out by the plants. Is it perfectly safe? I do not know.

How does he not get root rot? It’s a great idea though!
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy5 жыл бұрын
Gary responding. I have a few theories. The roots are above the water line. The woodchips contain the water leaving air space around them so there's aeration. Last year during the growing season Sweet potatoes took over my first pond sending feeder roots into the water. In the cooler months when new vine growth stopped the parts in and over the water died and rotted. I will wait and see if this happens with the strawberries. Pond video from April 2019 kzbin.info?o=U&ar=3&video_id=TcO9k2LyM68 Also Strawberries are grown in hydroponic and aquaponic systems. Thank you.

Gary responding. We have adult mosquitoes but the fish eat the larvae in the water. The setup can't stop mosquitoes coming in from elsewhere.
@knitordi5 жыл бұрын
Your set up is very creative and beautiful. As a retired Public Health Nurse I do have a concern that your pools can be breeding grounds for mosquitos that carry deadly Zika and West Nile Virus, active in Southern California. The mosquito fish may kill or control some but not all. There may be more escaping to infect the population. Prevention is the key. I use “Mosquito Dunkers” that are supposed to prevent breeding and kills mosquitos. You might consider this to see if it works better.
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy5 жыл бұрын
Gary responding. Thank you. The Mosquito dunks are a good option if I didn't have fish or wasn't trying to breed to increase the Dragonfly population. They contain B.T which would not harm fish but will kill Daphnia and other small organisms that I want in the biology in my ponds. They claim it won't kill Dragonfly larvae, but if it kills their food source? I have dragonfly Larvae in my first pond that survived the winter and the fish. We now have Aedes mosquitos that are active during the day so increasing the Dragonfly population is something I want to do.

This sounds like a great idea! But, it would totally not work where I live. :( And it's probably not what you are thinking, either. Middle of Phoenix - similar climate - maybe hotter. Problem? Raccoons. We can't keep any type of small pond around because of them. They catch and eat the fish and tear up/ destroy the plants while doing so. And, fish are necessary so that you don't have a mosquito explosion. Our container pond of abt 20 years had to die/dry up due to nightly raids by a mother and her 4 babies. While I loved seeing them grow, I couldn't encourage them by feeding them. And I couldn't allow mosquitoes to breed. (But, I would put clean water out in a container on really hot days/nights so that they wouldn't have to drink from heavily chlorinated swimming pools.)
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy5 жыл бұрын
Gary responding. Thank you. A friend in town had the same problem. He had to buy cage wire, or hardware cloth, and built lift off cages to put around his small ponds. He left them galvanized, but I would have painted them black or hunter green to blend in and look better. I haven't seen a Raccoon in our area for at least a decade. The overpopulation of Coyotes have wiped them out.
@melissajarvis48295 жыл бұрын
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy We had cattails. If we knew earlier in the year, we would have been able to put a mesh/ hardware cloth thing on before the cattails had sprouted up- they would grow through the holes. (We had to do that previously, several years earlier when some unknown animal was attacking our fish. We had reason to believe it was not raccoons.) While the more permanent mesh, placed a couple inches above the waterline, worked, it also made it impossible (or nearly so) to access the rest of the pond as needed. And, putting a cage around ten foot high Cattails just isn't practical for us. Not to mention, not visually appealing.
@melissajarvis48295 жыл бұрын
But, yes, I had forgotten about the mesh. That would work in the wading pools. The mesh my father used was a green plastic mesh, with holes about an inch wide. My Mom hated it above the dark pond surface, but I think it would be perfect for in the garden area.
