Those were some pretty serious Silvers! Lots of big natives and no invasives. What a dream. Almost like when I was a kid. I remember eating tandanus cooked in coals on the banks of the Warrego River when I was little. I recall it tasting truly fine, but that could be coloured by time. It'd be interesting to throw a few small crankbaits through there. Maybe float out some live shrimp/yabbies? More chance of a yellow and less of a cat.

Ripper spot Robbie. I lost all my trout to a heat wave back in December so I restocked with cattie fingerlings in January. Some of them are already over twenty centimetres. They are really good eating with no small bones. Two things- catties build a round nest several feet across in gravel in open water, usually in one to two metres of water, not in amongst the reeds. The males guard the nest and will sometimes have a go at you if you get too close. Usually a bluff but sometimes they'll rake your shins on the way past. And apart from the poisonous spine on the leading edge of the dorsal fin, they also have them on the leading edge of the pectoral fins. They can twist in your hands and nail you so be careful. I reckon Hollie is adopted. She doesn't look anything like you mate :) Always enjoy your videos Robbie- keep them coming!
@robbiefishing6 ай бұрын
Haha thanks so much mate. And thanks for the great info about the catties. They certainly are much tougher than trout. Thanks for the clarity on the reeds. I thought they spawned in the reeds. I appreciate your info. 👍👍
@JayInOz16 ай бұрын
@@robbiefishing No worries Robbie. Another interesting thing- catties do most of their feeding at night and will sometimes go into a sort of feeding frenzy where they move across the bottom like a rugby scrum- I fish for them at night where I keep catching carp during the day. And a lot of people stocked smaller dams with redfin here back when they were easy to catch in the creeks. Redfin will breed in small farm dams to big numbers and become stunted from lack of food, so you can never catch anything big enough to eat. They catch some whoppers in Burrendong Dam, which used to be our property boundary for a couple of miles years ago. Cheers mate.

Hey mate, not sure if you know, since you only mentioned the top fin but the side fins on the catfish can also get you, they can inject a venom that is extremely painful and can last for 24hrs or more.... Just thought I would warn you in case you didn't know, I would hate to see Holly or yourself get done by one. All in all a great session with many big fish landed and a few lost, definitely some of the biggest catfish and Silver's, I have ever seen 🎣💪 Keep up the awesome work as always PS That hour just flew by, you guys are obviously very entertaining dinglequots 😅😂

Not allowing the fish to touch the dirt does more than you may know. Even touching the fish with our dry hands which also have a bit of salt on them can damage the fish scales but it affects their slime coat which can cause contagious infection. Wetting your hands before handling them will prevent this. This is much more common in fish kept in captivity but it's still a nice and considerate way to treat wild fish. Also in my experience if the fish is does not go into shock from being caught in a net then some species after a while swim into the net as they know you are just inspecting them. I have minimal experience with Australian natives though.

Hi Robbie, I've been a follower across various accounts since your early days and always happy to recommend you to others. Your upbeat and joyous videos are always a joy. Is there any way my partner and I could get a fish in with you? Also, any chance you can do a video on fishing hook sizes for natives? We do a lot of fishing, relatively newish to freshwater with mistakes made. We have the kit and gear necessary, but a day out with pointers and perhaps getting my partner her first stonker brown trout, or both our first Murray Cod would be amazing. I've caught PB stonker Aussie bass on both small and medium trebles, (happy to share location and a fishing day together there) with the smaller treble breaking. Such a video covering both hook for bait and lure size I reckon can be a great resource for avid and new fresh water fishermen to increase catch rate and landing success. Appreciate it mate. Thanks. That was some crazy fishing on the private dam and I've never seen Silver's that size in the wild so I'd reckon they might be about 8-10 years old. They will eat that green algae too so its probably why they're so fat and happy there. Catfish are a fun fish to catch and they are really good to eat as well, the spines are really impressive on the pect and dorsal fins like a 3-4" nail and the outward facing side has serrations all down the length like a wood saw. So you'll know about if they collect you with them

Great to see Tim getting into them in a big way. Was great to meet him. That is a serious Kitty you got. A big, whiskrery pussy. What a wonderful little pond to have at your disposal. What footballs of Silvers! They are truly enormous. Shame we don't get them in the rivers like that anymore. Googong used to be really good for them, and the 'Bidgee but no longer found in the region and totally protected. As for those cats, they are really nice! Did you see my nice trout? She was post spawn, so a a little ratty, but a nice, cheeky little 57 cm 'bow at the end of the season is never going to disappoint.

Thanks Andrew. No I have seen that trout sorry, it sounds amazing. When I get a chance a bit later on I will see if I can find it on your channel.

i’ve got a dam similar size with reeds and ribbon weeds, problem like u said it’s chocker block full of decent redfin, i’ve stocked fingerling yellow belly 5 years ago yet to catch one but realistically don’t expect many survived with the redfin i learned from that and had to stock cod 15cm so they would survive the redfin. i might need to stock those catfish i’ve got those reads for them to breed.

As much as I love catching and eating redfin, they really are a pest in this situation. My best advice would be to keep the golden Perch on a larger tank and hand feed them until they're 15cm long or so. Then they will have a higher sir I am rate. Eventually, once there's enough golden Perch they will make the redfin disappear. The other option would be to stock 20,000 yellowbelly at a time for a few years, eventually enough will grow and they will get the upper hand over the redfin. Unless you're a millionaire, this probably isn't a good option though. LOL

gday robbie i was just wondering where the best trout steam is
@robbiefishing6 ай бұрын
Hi Jen, in Victoria the Goulburn River is probably considered the best. In NSW the Eucumbene River is the first that springs to mind.

You in NSW or Vic there? Those fish had been left unmolested for many years!

Great video thanks, but looking closely I reckon a lot of the perch you called silver, were actually Macquarie. The tail was rounded whereas silvers are slightly forked. Thanks all the same mate.
@robbiefishing2 ай бұрын
Thanks mate. I'm not trying to sound like a know it all, but there were definitely Silver Perch. I've caught a lot of Macquarie Perch over the years. There are quite a lot of differences. I very much doubt that Macca's would even survive in this environment to be honest.
