Rob.. I've don't tons of green bunching onions from store bought. I generally throw the bottom part in to a glass of water for a few days and let the roots really get started, then put them in to a Kratky set up with nutrients...and Wow they seriously love Kratky!

Hey Rob Bob; I believe the wrinkly twisty leaves you saw could actually be from what you were cautioning about the water level--the leaves looked overwatered to me especially in regards to what you were saying about having not seen aphids or other pests that would have caused damage.
@RobsAquaponics4 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian. I think most of it occurred due to the pests we had on there as they straightened out once they were gone. Found many dead skins from whatever they were & think thrips may have been the culprit. Cheers & have a top one.

Great update Rob, it's looking good mate. I've dabbled in what I call "static solution hydroponics", what you call "kratky". I don't mind it, something to keep in mind for yourself, in my experience, I frequently keep the ability to flick it over to a deep water culture because there are many reasons to do so for a short time. For instance if I the water to air ratio in the root system gets finicky (which it can sometimes do, I'm sure you will find, especially in the middle of summer with high transpiration), or when I add in a new plant with a smaller root system and need to fill the water up quite high. Using a timer on the power point of the air pump i distance the pump times further apart as the water level drops back down the the desired level before taking the air pump away all together. I am a long time viewer, I'll help out with podia when I can. Cheers from Mitch from the ACT.
@RobsAquaponics5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mitch. Will be setting up DWC with the aquaponics but am keeping it low tech for the time being with these tubs. Might platy around with recirculating pipes & trays again as I still have my old hydro kit from years ago stashed under then house. Just need to by a smaller air pump. Cheers mate & have a top one.

Some of the best Kratky I have seen growing. In your search for a good cucumber check out Telegraph Improved. Still in the parts acquisition stage of my indoor aquaponics system. Take care Rob.

Hi mate. Do they have a self-fertile variety? We're not seeing may pollinators up on the deck. Will have a look around & see what I can find. Cheers Joe.

Telegraph Improved pollinates easily. Each bloom in my indoor grow produced fruit. I think the big word for it is parthenocarpic. I did a clip on them on my channel.

Your so lucky you've got good weather like year round. I've got the equipment for a aquaponics but have never set one up. I got a homemade bioballs filter n I'm just afraid, to be honest with you of not doing it right. Since it's cold here in Haverhill Mass. I've got to set it up inside. I've got no friends that have the same interests

Are you looking at a small glass fish tank or larger barrel/tank style system Lisa?
@craigparry56485 жыл бұрын
Looks like thrip on the basil, some of the leaf curl maybe caused by over fertilizing as the plant use up the water in the solution more than the nutrients and only uses the nutrients required for stage in growth, leaving unused nutrients too build up(add water) by adding more solution to top up a reservoir can also cause nutrient lock out, its as best to flush the systems with fresh water then new nutrients, there are meters that test the ppm. Just got home from hospital to find dead fish with fin rot 😢,I topped up the system with tank water before going in ? But I also put some mosquito fish(from creek) in the sump awhile ago. Would you recommend I drain the system and start again or add fungal treatment.cheers Craig

I keep replying buy KZbin isn't letting the comments stick for some reason.

Will try again. Didn't think of thrips as we don't get them often here.
@RobsAquaponics5 жыл бұрын
I didn't change the water at all when I had my outbreak. I brought the pH up into the proper range, held off the feed & salted the water to help with their recovery. From memory the fungal treatment available for aquarium fish isn't suitable to be used in aquaponics. Hope that helps & these responses stick. Cheers mate.

It would be interesting to do an experiment comparing the effect of an air stone with no air stone. I suspect gas exchange in the root zone is limiting growth. I've got a kratky method jar going right now. Simple and easy - i love it!

I am having trouble deciding when to shift the seedlings from germination to the growing part. any tips? I mess up every time. i'm using neem oil to ward off the pests. any other suggestions to keep the growing chemical-free?
@RobsAquaponics4 жыл бұрын
I like plants to have 2 or 3 sets of true leaves before transplanting them. I find they do better at dealing with the transplant shock. I have used neem myself & also soapy sprays for soft "shelled" critters like aphids. Also blasting them with a hose will kill many I've found. Hope that helps some.

Hi Rob, I was wondering where you purchased your "Bloom" from? Was it a big box store, on line or at a speciality hydroponics store. I live in Wynnum, Brisbane. so hoping to find something close. Also does that Bloom have NPK rating?
@RobsAquaponics5 жыл бұрын
Hi Sandra & sorry for not getting back to you straight away. This is the site for the bloom I used. bloomadvancedfloriculture.com.au/products/bloom-coco-grow-ab/ You can pick it up from Aqua Gardening on the north side or any well-stocked hydroponics store. 👍 Both bottles have different NPK levels but are more than enough for standard veggies. Sorry again for being so slack with the response.

We had to move out of our house for almost a year now while it was being renovated Smiles. Posted a few clips explaining what was going on through the reno's. 👍 No chooks until we get a bit of landscaping work done. No landscaping work can be done until we can afford to get the property properly surveyed as we need to find where the true fence line is. I can understand it must be frustrating for you but hope you can also imagine how frustrating it is for us. Cheers.
