Can we use organic fertilizer for other Nutrient deficiencies.? Are potassium bicarb and calcium hydroxide, chelated iron are they safe to fish.?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 3 жыл бұрын
@@samsunny6483 Those ones are safe for fish. 👍 I would recommend only using organic fertilisers but not ones that use a great deal of nitrogen or ammonia as there should be more than enough in the waste provided by the fish.

Great clip Rob thank you. To make it easy to add nutrients i find it useful to embed a shallow cup under the inlet pipe. That way you just dump the powder into the cup, it dissolves and the water overflows into the system. You do get a bit of algae in the cup but its easily cleaned.

Not really, occasionally I'll put in some liquid seaweed but I'm guessing with amounts and I think the actual problem may be my ph sits around 8.2 and I can't seem to bring it down. Even though I painted my tanks I still browny green slime on them. I also have old roots through my grow beds but I've put in a hand full of worms into each grow bed and I thought that would fix that. I only see 1 or 2 occasionally so maybe they've got through to the tanks and been eaten?

You could do the magnesium test at home if you can obtain sodium hydroxide and sulfuric acid. However, you would probably need to buy a much more precise scale (milligrams) and take more water from your system (5 gallons) The $80 is probably worth it 🙃 Thanks for all the great info! What kinds of dangers are there to supplementing iron in other ways? I sometimes will have an iron deficiency in my soil growing beds, which I remedy by simply burying a rusty nail at the base of each plant, and I find that this usually works quite well. Would this same method work for an aquaponics system? Or would the rust in the water be toxic to the fish?

I brought fish friendly iron supplement i wasnt gain enough to try a nail ect lol
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 жыл бұрын
Rust from a nail is iron oxide so isn't readily available for plants in aquaponics. Am taking an educated guess & say that there are other organisms in the soil that would be converting that nail into a plant available form. 👍 I know a number of folks that have had the same results as you BTW. Hey Colin. Probably only up to 5min most days which includes feeding the fish (less than 60sec), going over plants looking for pest/disease & harvesting so a lot less than someone that needs to water their garden daily. About 15-25 is added on filter clean days. Hope that helps some.

I have asked the feed producers if I could have a breakdown but they guard that information fairly tightly. I've only ever run one system at a time here due to space issues & with the omnivorous Jade & Silver perch. I want to set up 2 identical systems next to each other at some point but more to test different plumbing arrangements rather than fish types. Chewers Richard & happy growing mate.

Hi Rob, how can i add another growbed to my existing aquaponics system?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 жыл бұрын
That would depend on the layout. If its a split flow like ours, you just need to run the inlet line from the pump & make sure you can reach the sump with the drain. Also make sure that the sump has enough capacity to be able to service the new bed if you're running them as a flood & drain.

Can we cultivate only within the aquwaponic system without adding external nutrients
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 3 жыл бұрын
Not as I see it you can't. Some will claim that you just keep adding more feed (namely commercial pellets) & that will be all you need but then you run into issues of having far too many Nitrates which needs to be removed or it could cause issues with the fish. Like any veggies growing system, there will always be some input needed to look after minor deficiencies. Cheers.

@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 жыл бұрын
I don't have a bluelab test for nutrients sorry, just pH & water temp. EC isn't an accurate measure of nutrients in aquaponics as not all the nutrients are in salt form.

Many folks do grow tomatoes in aquaponics. They do benefit from higher feed rates & additional potassium for bloom & fruit production.

Hi Rob can you help me to do aquaponics in my village in Senegal ( WEST Afrika). I wish to run it with solar ENERGY. When i can buy pump air, water, air stone solar powered. Thank you. For now i am in Germany
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 жыл бұрын
I don't have any experience in setting up a solar run system sorry mate. If you're after it for plant production & not the fish it might pay for you to look into iAVs. It's a system that uses sand as the growing medium & as the pump only runs a few times a day it might be a better idea for a solar run system. iavs.info/ Hope that helps some.

Best way to lower overall pH in a system with fish is to lower the pH in the top up water. That way you won't harm the fish if you accidently lower it too far. This clip might give you a few pointers, kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4CUoXuDbKaZq9k Hope that helps some.

How are you brother, how did the earth life turned out? did you send your water quality out to get tested?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't had the water tested again yet. Have been using a mineralisation tank & am looking to send some water samples off as soon as I get some spare cash. I found that the earth life helped in soil so I think it would help a bit in the aquaponics as well. Only thing I'm not sure of is if the bacteria in the blend would have survived in that environment.

This is nothing new myself and True aquaponics have been doing this for years. I cover all of these nutrients in depth on the first 16 or so episode of the Growing With Fishes Podcast. Nice to see the rest of the community catching up with the nutrients and getting past fish poo is magic :) I'd remove brightgrows link as over half there advise is flat out wrong and dated for aquaponics a nd leaves out many important elements.
@RobsAquaponics

It's a pity you don't label the podcasts with the topics Steve as none show up in a search when you look for nutrient deficiencies. Would be very handy to the community if you could do so & bless us all with your knowledge. 😉 I've never said that fish poo was magic & have said the opposite in a number of clips. I think you may have confused me with your other Aussie mate. 🤔

@@RobsAquaponics I had some one that was going to transcribe them all to make them searchable but he only got about 20 episodes done. Its been a issue with all the content we have now. Nah you never said fish poo is magic but many others do. Keep up with the great educational videos. :) Also alot of cannabis stuff is harder to find because of KZbin's censorship.

A lot of it was picked up cheap 2nd hand or was gifted to us so can't give you an "off the shelf price" sorry mate. To buy the fish tank, large media bed with a stand, media, plumbing, pumps clay media, stands new & the 2nd hand IBCs & barrels as I have it set up you'd be looking at about $2500. I got a lot of this gear VERY cheaply 2nd hand or for free. I'm also using a lot of the parts for the 3 or forth time so at a guess I think I've probably spent $400 putting it together as you see it here today. Most of that is filter material & the new pump. It's FAR cheaper to use the 2nd hand IBC & drums for small backyard systems & would advise anyone starting out to use them before outlaying wads of cash for the "You Beaut " aquaculture tanks & filters. Hope that helps Gavin.
