Build tip :o) (to anyone) Make your tank weld on aluminium fittings all female. It’s harder to strip the thread and if you do manage that sinking feeling as the spanner suddenly goes loose, you can still helicoil it ^-^

Welding Aluminum. Only use carbide burrs or files never use sanding stones, paper or any abrasive grit type tools that can get impregnated into the base metal.. You will always see kittle black floaties in your puddle.. (inclusions and contaminates) You will do just fine, its relatively EASY TO WELD ITS CLEAN AND SHINNY WHEN WELDING IT... 35 yr AEROSPACE WELDER..

I've been welding for over 15 years. TIG welding thick aluminum is easy and its VERY forgiving if you have guidance. Its when you get down to the thinner material is when things start to get western and you have to be more precise with your amps, speed of travel and heat input into the material.

Having someone like Shaun there to say " that is no problem" Just increases the quality of that build buy a 1000% . Anyone else would have had to move the engine forward or hack something else to make that all work. I also love the plasma table as I use cad often to figure out some of my projects to see if they work. So cool how accurate they cut. I didn't even know plasma would cut aluminum that clean.

Robby, Mike Brewer of Wheeler Dealers did a 1973 Saab 96 from the early 60's and found someone in Los Angeles who made windshields to fit by finding a common one with the same curvature and very cleverly cutting it to shape. It was episode 139 dated 26 October 23017, the fourth car in the first series with Ant Anstead. I believe that the back episodes are to be found on Discovery Plus. I am sure that the cost of a new windshield cut to shape would be less than the $3000 you have been quoted.

For anyone who doesn't know, when talking "size" of fittings, hoses, and such as a single number such as #16AN if you put the number over 16 as a fraction such as 16/16 and convert it to the lowest common denominator, it is the size in inches. #16/16 is 1", #6/16= 3/8", #5/16 stays 5/16" etc etc.

Tip 1 when balancing aluminum wheels with tape on weights. Seal them with aluminum speed tape. This will keep them from getting wet and keep them from falling off. This is the method used to keep the weights on the nose wheels of airplanes. Tip 2 To check the welds on your tank for leaks before it is completely sealed, mix chalk with water and brush on one side of the weld then brush kerosene on the other side of the weld. Stains on the chalk side indicate a leak. 🙂
