I'm here to say thank you. Fred, the tow truck was my little brother Ryan's. He passed 6 years ago in February of 2017. He loved that truck. Thank you for giving Fred life again, and he's sat in my sister's back yard for that 6 years. Ryan loved towing, it was his lifeblood. It didn't matter what time you needed him, he was on the way. I can't tell you all the stories I heard as it would take so long, I'd have to make my own video. I know he would approve. Thank you again. Please, keep the name Fred. Lockers, some lift, tires and wheeel, new emergency lights 🚨 and a kick butt Robby Layton paint job. I’d leave the pto winch and add auxiliary electrical winches on the front sides and else where on the back. I’d also consider leaving the dolly wheels in the event you need to tow something with flats and don’t have the roll back on hand. If you do a drivetrain swap I’d do a 12 valve if you go diesel or a 7.3 Godzilla if you go gas.

Just in case anyone didn't know, Robby is right, dry powder extinguishers are single use items. The powder jams in the valve and all the pressure will leak out over about 30 minutes after it's fired the first time. When it's serviced they can refill it and clean the valve out.
@dave_n8pu Жыл бұрын
I agree, when Hillbilly wanted to test it, I'm thinking that's not a good idea, here in Michigan I think there's a date limit, for a service interval even if it never was used.

They make an attachment that bolts to the through the center hole of the wheel lift for a trailer hitch attachment. You should be able to easily manufacture it. The welded on hitch will interfere with the pivot. It will cause oil pan clearance issues when tilting on some cars. A removable option would be less intrusive. The chains can hook into the L Arm slots, you dont have to use the hooks on the wheel lift receivers. The hooks are for using chains as tie downs on the newer receivers

I know you're talking about using an electric winch on the boom for more speed.👍 Would it be possible to keep the PTO winch in place and mount the new electric above it? Then you could run the PTOs cable straight out the rear for use when you have move something that would require the use of pulleys to double or triple line the electric to get enough pull. Like it's been said, it's slow, but it will pull a house over!

If it were mine I’d start with putting some lockers in it, giving it some lift, wheels, and bigger tires. I’d leave the hydraulic winch then add a bunch of electric winches everywhere else. I’d put all Warn winches since you’re OnX Elite and get a discount. Warn also makes a front winch bumper for a 2017 that’s looks awesome on OBS Trucks. Then I’d paint it and give it all new lighting. If you do an engine swap at some point I think I’d get with Industrial Injection and do a 12 valve unless you want to stick with gas in which case I’d do a 7.3 Godzilla. So excited about this one!

Robby formula wheel lifts have a hitch option. It’s a big clamshell that goes over the center pin and has a bolt that goes through the wheel lift. When your done using it stows on a holder on the bed. As a tow professional for over 20 years your hard mount receiver is going to cause more grief than it solved. There are also 5th wheel hitch kits that secure to the wheel lift. Keep the hydraulic winch. They do long pulls with out overheating like electrics do. Also off on a hydraulic winch with no load is off where a electric takes several seconds to stop. We used to run a set of implement fittings on the back of our wreckers to run jacks,jaws, and other rescue equipment.

Ceramic coat it before you paint it!!! I absolutely want to see that patina coated while we have a chance! That truck really needs a nice custom paint job, and so do your flatbeds!! Out here in PA, body shops with tow trucks usually try to outdo each other with custom paint techniques. Maybe don't go too crazy on the wrecker, though, and try to do the custom work on the places least likely to get bashed in on the trail. Another thing, PLEASE keep the hydraulic winch! It might be slow, but it is a strong puller and it I would trust it to hold up that sling far more than an electric winch. Plus, it'll be your one working winch if you ever have an electrical failure. Don't let that stop you from adding electric winches, but there's absolutely no reason to take off the winch that was designed by engineers who know more than you to work with that truck. If you put side winches on it, add some outriggers. You won't pull the truck over that way, and it'll give you a place to hook when rigging a snatch block. Don't lift it too much if you are going to keep the wheel lift. You may have to lower the wheel lift if you do. Angle of the dangle. Those wheel chocks are called Scotch Blocks, and they are awesome. Keep those. Those dollies, man keep them too. Leave the mounts on the truck and keep the dollies at the shop or mount them on the top of the toolbox of the big flatbed. They're handy as hell to have around, especially at a 2 car accident. Keep the grease the hell off of those receivers!!! That stuff gets everywhere!!! Every time the mechanics at the shop did me a favor and greased my receivers, I took them apart and went to the Blue Beacon Truck Wash with the company credit card and had those guys pressure wash it back off. I usually paint the T bar, wax it and spray everything with silicone!!! Heck, the truck is SPONSORED by a product that's one job is to make paint slippery. Use it. I'd like to see how well that works, too!! Otherwise, gears and lockers for sure. That old 460 is a beast, but you need to address it's weaknesses if you are going to go off road and beat the doo doo out of it. The pushrods are weak. Upgrade the pushrods, add a guide plate, and change your rockers out, bare minimum. If you are going to keep that motor, though, you'd better get the other gas tank in and working because that thing will get 6mpg on a good day, and in low range on rocks you're going to start measuring gallons to the mile. If that was my truck, I would buy a shortbed F150 with a 300 straight six, rebuild the 300 with a mild cam and a little more compression for the wrecker, and then rebuild the 460 with a wild cam and a lot more compression for the F150. If you are going to run a loud 460, run turndowns or run it out the back. Putting it out the side leads to a drone that makes it pretty annoying after a while for the driver. If you must remove the push bumper, you should weld a plate on the back and make it a skid steer attachment.

Add a set of frame and axle forks to slide on the wheel lift. Lifting by the tires is an easy way to tow a vehicle but if a tire and wheel is ripped off because of a broken knuckle or ball joint, being able to lift by the axle tube or the frame rails can make life a lot easier. You can also weld pieces of flat stock to the sides of the under lift so when the T bar is pulled all the way in, it prevents it from pivoting just like the chains do for using the receiver hitch. Using this method will allow you to adjust the height of the hitch ball without having to reset the chains.

Best stretch out the wire on wrecker check for fishhooks and oil the cable. Remember to measure the diameter every 3' for wear damage and rust.
