Rob introduces his assembly bench turned cabinetmaking bench. What started out as an inexpensive easy to build assembly bench has been converted to a very useful cabinetmaking bench. By adding a few Sjoberg vises and a tool tray, this 3" thick MDF top and 2 1/4" thick plywood base is fantastic.

Recently built this bench following the DVD available on your website and with the vice and bench dogs from your shop. It is easy to build, flat and stable, and a real pleasure to use. Thanks Rob

Thanks you. I'd been looking at a ton of "$100 bench" and "your first workbench" videos and this is the first one which acknowledges the startup tools cost. I went through a few of the others and priced up the tools, assuming you really were just starting out (minimal power tools). By the time you bought the jointer, planer, table saw, huge clamps, etc - it was cheaper to buy the top end Sjobergs. Also, my son's "workshop" is about 10' by 6' right now: no way we could put the big power tools anywhere. This one looks doable, with perhaps a 1-day rental from Homedepot of a table saw for accurately and quickly cutting the MDF to size. That's $55 per day for quite a large one. FYI for anyone wondering, the Sjoberg's vise is about $275 at present, and a 4 x 8 x 3/4 MDF sheet is about $30, 1/4 x 4 x 8 plywood is another $30

I just built one. Material prices have skyrocketed. MDF - $120. 3/4 plywood $85. Lags $42. Glue $38. Screws $11. $296 without the vise. And worth every penny. You could park a car on it. I screwed the top layer on without glue so that if I need to change it in the future, it'll be a piece of cake.

Hi Jim, you’re right, that title did not age well! We use 1” Baltic birch for the top on some benches, three layers and a 3” thick plywood top. In one year the ply went from $129 to $295 a sheet! Crazy!

Guy is a damn genius, every video I have watched of his solves some kind of issue i am facing..the MDF top idea solves so many problems formy bench build and for me in my workshop where i don't have all the proper tools to get a laminated hardwood top processed without a jointer and planer.

Nice to see an actual "work" bench and not some heirloom wannabe! I used old solid-core doors which were discarded from an office remodel, to make mine and I appreciate having a dependable and fully functional/usable work surface. Never liked working off sawhorses or even the floor. Nice job! Thanks for sharing!!!

Totally agree about the tool tray on the back side! I built my woodworking bench (6 ft long x 21" wide) without one and, after dropping tools, etc off the backside for 9 months, got p*** off and added a tool tray. Totally worth it. Not sure I like the idea of MDF for top but can't argue with your experience (my bench has 3 layers of 3/4" plywood which is a bit soft). The Sjoberg vises sound very nice but are very expensive (for this guy anyways).

I just pulled the trigger on a new Sjobergs Elite bench today. Couldn't be more happy. If you want to build your own bench, don't forget you need a bench to make a bench! I designed a Scandinavian bench like RC's in 3D CAD years ago but never had a workshop, machinery and a bench to build it it. Maybe one day, 😂.

Im going to use this idea, and adapt it to make a proper bench with a tool well. Im thinking another good idea would be to only spot glue the top piece of MDF so when it gets really beaten up you can easily remove it and replace with another.

I like the top. For convenience to new woodworkers I'd suggest making the base out of a box made of OSB screwed together with 2x4s at the corners. A box made of sheet material will never rack.BTW, THANK YOU! for calling it a vice 'jaw' and not a 'chop.'
@deezynar
@deezynar 8 жыл бұрын
The home center cuts the OSB to size for him. The woodworker puts the pieces together with screws. The front edges of the end panels are flush with the front of the top. There's a 2x4 screwed to each end panel on their inside faces right along the front edge. The 2x4's are screwed to the end panels flat, with their wide faces. The front panel is screwed to the back edges of those two 2x4s. That way, the front panel is set back 3 1/2" from the front of the bench. He'll put shims under each corner to level it on his floor. It's down-and-dirty so a guy doesn't need a table saw, and he can get working on projects right away. He can make a fancier bench using this one. Whatever bench he makes later, it will never have a more rigid base than this one.

I love the simplicity of this design, especially the base, but I built an MDF top 20 years ago from 2 full layers & a partial third layer, edged with 45mm Oregon. It is no longer flat at the vise end by at least 2mm. So time for a rebuild. I will use plywood as per Paul Sellers for the bench top but the top layer will be 19mm Bamboo as it is very hard & looks fantastic. As the Sjobergs vise is not available in Australia, I recommend the HNT Gordon front & tail vises, superb quality.

I bought this for my friend for his birthday as we just moved into a new house and he finally has room for a workshop. The bench was very easy to set up kzbin.infoUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh They center support is a little difficult to snap in and out of place at first but at least then we know the bench is secure. It was a pleasant surprise when we saw it came with clamps. I apparently missed that in the description. My friend loves the versatility of the bench. Great starter bench for his workshop and easily transportable all over our property. I wish the bench was a little taller but the other features of the bench more than make up for that.

Hey Rob, big fan, thanks very much for all of the videos. On the chance you are looking for an idea for another video, I wondered if you might give your thoughts on glue up of a table top like this one for beginners. Specifically regarding how to glue and clamp it flat when your just getting started, I don't have a nice flat bench yet to use as a surface for glue up. Was wondering about making a set of cauls from 2x4s but was unsure. Thanks again for all the great videos

Very good consept, I have been doing some rough calculations. The sort of $100 Canadian I'm assumeing is around £58. For 4 sheets of 18mm (3/4) mdf I'm allready up to £92. Estimate around 2 sheets of 9mm (3/8) ply wood is another £50. Add on an additional £30 for bolts ect. And now for 2 sjobergs vice at £215 each. So I'm now up to £602. Without any additional cost for shipping of vices. So this $100 is either way off or things are RIDICULOUSLY cheap in Canada and USA. Not knocking the bench design at all.
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 4 жыл бұрын
The $100 is meant for the wood only. And yes I have discovered that MDF is substantially cheaper in Canada. In the U.S. we figure the cost, NOT including the vice or vices should you want two, is between $150 and $200 depending on where you live. In Canada its around $120 (USD). Helps to have lots of trees!!!

Thanks for you reply Rob. I hope you don't get the impression I'm knocking the bench itself, not at all. But for me hear in the UK and anyone eles to buy materials and vices, which yes would be required to price is around the £500-£600. You guys are extremely lucky with the equipment you have as well as the accessiblity to the fantastic hard woods. All of which hear are like unicorn s***. All the best.

Looks good but I'm interested in the bench you use now. I'm also interested in the spelling of "Vice". The expression vice versa means conversely or the other way around. In American English, the noun vise refers to a gripping or clamping tool. As a verb, vise means to force, hold, or squeeze as if with a vise. In both cases, the British spelling is vice and don't start me on colour or my biggest hate, the word, "gotten". There is no such word!!!!!!

Question, if I made the top out of 3/4 plywood and 1/4 fiberboard (easily changed if damaged), wrapped with, say, 3/4 maple.....so 3" thick plus 1/4" - maple sides would be 3 1/4" wide by whatever......would that work? Rob, it's Medium Density Overlay. It's a plywood core with a paper surfaced veneer. For many decades it was and probably still is used for many highway and street and business signs etc and it's a good product for plywood projects that will be painted. Mr. Cosman, how would you recommend chamfering the edges of an MDF top, such as yours, if i do not have a router available? Would chamfering with a plane, and sanding the edges a bit work in prolonging the MDF life, or is routing the preferred way (mechanically speaking, not in terms of effort)? What finishes can be applied to MDF? (i know i can probably rent one, rather than buying a cheap one-use-only router, but i'd rather keep this as cheap as possible to boot) Thank you for your videos, i'm at the point where any information is precious, and your videos are invaluable!

Rob, do you know the difference between the sjobergs vise you showed AV-15 and the Sjobergs SJO-33302 Adjustable Vise?? i found them both at the same price...
@jaxplane
@jaxplane 8 жыл бұрын
+Rob Cosman Thank you for the quick response, On the vise box i see in your video it says AV-15 the av stands for adjustable vise... i believe the SJO 33302 is sjobergs part number... rockler sells the SJO33302 but for installation details the paper says AV-15, therefore I now believe they are the save vise... just model number vs part number.... love the video giving us 17 deg angle for use in softwoods.... i tried it and no more tear out of material in pine dovetails.... works great

Hi - does anyone have a rough idea of how much tung oil this will require? Are we talking 200ml or 5 litres?! And same with the glue - any idea on quantity for the laminated top. It's only the top I'm going for at the moment.

Well i have never measured it but you should use a tung oil finish not pure tung oil. You can make your own by cutting pure tung oil 50% with mineral spirits. I would think a quart would do!!!

RobCosman.com thanks again Rob. I’m drawing up plans for the base as it will need to sit against a wall and I’d like some storage underneath. Will try some simple lap joints. Enjoying the design process actually and practicing my drawing. Will be a couple of months as I’m moving house but then I’ll post a pic. Loving your videos and support.

I couldn't find any anywhere. So I decided to learn sketchup and started making my own. One thing he doesn't really show here is how the top stretchers are laid out. Had to guess on that one. Still working on the step by step.

we eliminated a vise, the end one can be used for holding stock to plane as well as dovetailing. bench is $100, vise is $260, dogs are $50, tool tray is nothing much.
