In this video we take a look at Zhiyun's new line of lights - the 100C tube and the M40 pocket panel. Lights like this are great when you're working on a budget, tight for space, or need to set up quickly - and when combined with a good power output, they can be very useful, especially when you're working with ambient light.

I've been using pocket lights and tube lights more the last couple of years. Between the low profile and high light output, it's amazing what can be achieved by one person in a short amount of time. The light weight of these units is also great for travel. Batteries and LEDs have really matured, and are a real game changer!

Absolutely, there's a lot of lighting options for a one man band or tiny team these days and it's amazing to be able to do things with light that we wouldn't really have had the freedom to do a few years back!

Thanks Maarten! I've thought about this one on and off for a while, but it's a pretty multi faceted subject to cover as it overlaps with blocking, camera positioning, weaker or more powerful lights, size of room... so I've not pulled the trigger on writing anything yet because I know it will be a very long video haha!

I starting to think this is the best channel I've found for lighting tuorials on KZbin. Each video I watch is teaching me more principles to keep in mind. Do you think dropping the ISO below native ISO on a camera is worth doing in these situations in general?
@RobEllisCinematographer
@RobEllisCinematographer 8 ай бұрын
I appreciate it, thank you so much! Glad to hear you're learning from my videos! I think it's entirely dependant on how you want the expose the image, since dropping your ISO below native is effectively overexposing, pushing your mid point up and reducing stops in the highlights. Great for keeping shadows clean but it might not be appropriate for every situation!

@@RobEllisCinematographer Thanks for the reply Rob. I wanted to ask your opinion on lighting when the subject is talking to and facing the camera. If the face is facing directly towards the lens, does thsat make upstage lighting effectively a no-go because there is no side of the face furthest from the camera? I would love to see you do a video about how to light a subject talking to camera. If you check my last video, would you have any tips on how to improve it? I am only using a Sony A7iii until I have money to eventually upgrade.

I kindly ask you to make a video deepening the importance of light blocking, as without it light leaks and does not create the desired look, controlling light through blocking is very important, and I would love to learn from you. Rob have you ever done any videos in the past about lighting without traditional “film” lights? (I.e. clamp/work lights/homemade deakins ring etc.?) I love your video of the affordable bounce board w/ skirt and was wondering if you’ve ever used household bulbs like the philips WIZ LED bulbs? They have a CRI of 90, are dimmable, RGBCCW and can be bought at a hardware store for way less than even the nanlite pavobulbs.

I haven't - but it's something that's on the list, as I know it would be quite an interesting/useful topic. I've never personally lit anything that way as I started lighting with super cheap tungsten red heads, but I'm sure it's something I'd enjoy doing and I think you can expect to see something like that at some point soon! :)

Pretty quick with this video in particular, since that's why lights like this are useful! But it varies depending on what I'm doing, how complicated the lighting setup is, if I'm trying something new, etc. Can take about 20 minutes to set up a shot (as is the case with some of the shots in this video), or it can take an hour or 2 to nail down a look or get contrast ratios looking how I want them. I've gotten pretty used to determining where to put a light in the right place for a subject that's not currently in front of the camera, thanks to filming myself for the last few years haha! The best thing is when it comes to lighting someone else it feels much easier and is quicker because of that! Thank you so much!

This is one of the few videos I've seen on cinematography that really tackles how to light scenes to change the time of day to fit the needs of the story. As a user of Sony cameras, namely the FX30, would it make sense to use this technique with the Profile turned off instead of shooting in log? Since log tends to limit how low you can set the ISO. Or do you ignore that, and lower the ISO anyway when shooting in log?
@RobEllisCinematographer
@RobEllisCinematographer Жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar with Sony cameras, but I usually shoot in Log so I have as much flexibility as possible in the colour grade. The lower ISO helps to keep the image cleaner when shooting images you want to look intentionally dark, rather than underexposing with ND and getting noisy shadows. It allows you to expose the sensor to the right whilst seeing a normal image, so Log or no Log you're still doing the same thing, you just have more flexibility in the grade with Log! And if you shoot RAW even more so :)
@AllThingsFilm1
@AllThingsFilm1 Жыл бұрын
@@RobEllisCinematographer According to Sony, the FX30 has a dual base ISO of 800 and 2500. And that those two ISO's have the cleanest image and the best dynamic range. If I went below ISO 800, would the image still be cleaner, and would I lose dynamic range?
@RobEllisCinematographer
@RobEllisCinematographer Жыл бұрын
@@AllThingsFilm1 if you go below 800 it will be cleaner only if you're controlling your light and adding more of it into your shadows to expose for that lower ISO. (Or opening your aperture). If you have full control of the light in your scene, lowering your ISO is useful because you can gain more stops of DR in the shadows (or vice versa, if you shoot a higher ISO you gain more stops in your highlights). You don't lose the overall amount of dynamic range in this situation, you just have a bigger chunk of it allocated to your shadows and less allocated to your highlights as your mid point shifts up. Which is why it's best to use when you have precise control over your lighting and you can adjust the balance of contrast ratios you want to create in your scene. Combined with measuring your lighting ratios and using exposure tools like false color you get maximum control over how exactly your image looks and can shoot for overall darker scenes with less noise. If you want a dark moody image with more shadows in the scene = lower ISO. More highlights in the scene = higher ISO. Balance between the two = base ISO. It's very handy to look up a dynamic range chart for your camera so you know exactly how many stops of highlights and shadows you gain or lose when exposing at different ISOs. In more uncontrolled situations (that aren't super dark) the base ISO is generally better as it gives you a balanced distribution of dynamic range which helps you to avoid noise. A good test to visualise this better would be to light something/someone at base ISO of 800 and use a fill light to light the rest of the room much darker, but still retaining some detail. Drop to ISO 400 or even 200 and adjust your lights until the image looks the same. The lower ISO image should be cleaner as you're giving the sensor more light! Dual ISO does make this slightly more complicated as you have 2 circuits/ranges with slightly different distributions of DR, not sure how different this is with the Sony sensors though. It's quite a hard topic to describe just on a KZbin comment but I actually have a Shutterstock Tutorials video coming out on KZbin in the next few months that goes into it, I'll try to remember to let you know when it's out! Alternatively, cameras are really good these days and you can just shoot base ISO and use noise reduction haha. But you do lose some control you might otherwise have benefited from in certain lighting situations. Apologies for my long long comment haha, I hope it helps in some way! :D
