Rashomon practically exploded on the internation cinema scene after winning the Venice Film Festival in 1951 and went on to revolutionize cinema altogehter, for reasons mapped out by Altman here, very much like what Pulp Fiction did in the 90s in regards to breaking conventions in storytelling and whatnot. Thanks for this snippet, James!

Rashomon is perhaps the most intriguing of Kurosawa 's films. The choice of the ramshackle house, the bright sunlight drenching some of the exterior scenes, the structure of script and story combine to create a haunted, ravaged effect in this film. A pall hangs over the movie. An eerieness . The movie is in a sense a philosophical movie about crime. it isn't a crime film per se but a crime does take place. Screenwriting is often said to be about What Happens Next? Well Roshomon is a film that is about What Happens?

Throne of Blood is amazing but this looks good too. Kurosawa photographed things so beautifully.

Just saw Rashomon the other day, fascinating film - love the Medium character! Still prefer Ikiru, Ran and Seven Samurai of the Kurosawa films I've seen so far - but they've all been great!
