This week I travelled down to Cornwall to spend some time with my family. The majority of my family on my father's side live in Cornwall and Devon so heading south is something I've done frequently throughout my life. It was made extra special with the arrival of my sister and my niece and nephew from Germany!
I was not originally planning on going on holiday, but the opportunity to see everyone and potentially make a video by the coast was too great to pass up. I had begun to learn Fahey's 'On The Sunny Side Of The Ocean' around this time last year, but I never got round to finishing it, so on the day of my departure I sat down and gave it a proper once over as I felt that this was the perfect song to do down in Looe (my childhood beach). After that I made the four hour drive and got to the cottage just after midnight. The fun part was then waking up at five in the morning to catch the sunrise for the video... I think the visuals in this video proved to be more than worth it, though!
Cornwall and Looe represent more than just a holiday to me; it is my family and it is my childhood. Walking the streets of Looe at dawn when no one was around was quite the experience. As a child it always felt so intense and busy, but on that Wedensday morning I truly felt the calm of the waters and the sleepiness of the town. It allowed me to reflect on all that has happened here and what may come.
Sadly, I lost my grandmother a few years ago and being back here gave me that time to grieve and be near her again. Me and my sister always used to call her Nanny Mary by the Seaside, and knowing that her physical presence is no longer there has been tough. She used to routinely watch Free Willy and Jack Frost with us when we went down for Christmas and my birthday (New Year's Day). One day I'll find it within me to watch them again.
Nanny Mary found religion in the latter half of her life, and whilst I am not a man of God, I could feel her with me in that sunrise.
R.I.P. Nan - one day I will meet you again... on the sunny side of the ocean.

Guitar is a Martin 000-15ME. Tuning is Open G: DGDGBD. Recorded live on a Zoom H2n. Mixed in Pro Tools.

Robert Barnett is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter based in Rugby, Warwickshire. Robert has received high praise for his fingerstyle guitar technique and poetic lyricism. He is the guitarist for the band Wax Rats, but still continues to be an active solo musician. Robert has just recorded his first two full-length albums of original music, with 'Afterglow' seeing a release in December 2021, and his first instrumental album 'Voiceless' hot on its heels just 3 months later in February 2022!
