Hello everyone! It's been some time since I've managed to put a 'Home Sessions' video together, so I'm very excited to be getting back on track and hopefully putting out content a little more regularly for you all.
Today's video is a cover of the instrumental 'Turnpike Terror' by Peter Lang from his album 'The Thing At The Nursery Room Window'. Those of you who follow my music to any degree will likely know that the American Primitive guitar movement started by Fahey and his Takoma Records label mates (Kottke, Basho, Ochs, Taussig, et al) had a huge influence on my fingerpicking style in my late teens, and that influence has continued right through to the present day.
I first heard this song when I bought the album after watching the documentary 'In Search of Blind Joe Death: The Saga of John Fahey' and wanted to explore the genre in more detail. I remember being struck by the oddly melancholic feel to the piece, despite the speed and technicality of it. It's a hard thing to articulate, but something about it really resonated with me.
My youngest dog, Bo, tagged along for the ride, too. He seemed to be particularly interested in this song (I think it was the harmonics that set him off), so we are all fortunate enough to be graced by his presence throughout the video.
Anyway, I hope I did this song justice, and I hope you all enjoy what you hear 🎸

Guitar is a Martin 000-15ME. Tuning is C# G# C# F G# C#. Recorded live on a Tascam DR-40X. Mixed in Pro Tools.
Filmed on a iPhone 12. Edited in VEGAS Movie Studio 16 Platinum. The dog was a paid actor.

About Robert Barnett
Robert Barnett is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter based in Rugby, Warwickshire. Robert has received high praise for his fingerstyle guitar technique and poetic lyricism. Over the years he has played in many bands - most recently Shemp - but has now returned to solo playing and writing (with the odd collab here and there along the way!). Robert has just recorded his first two full-length albums of original music, with 'Afterglow' seeing a release in December 2021, and his first instrumental album 'Voiceless' hot on its heels just 3 months later in February 2022!
