First time I saw him was on the tail end of the Strong Persuader Tour in 1987 at The Tower Theater in Philly.....still the best concert I've ever seen...and I've been playing since 1971 and working since 1989 in Nashville ....so I've seen a "few" guitarists. The opening act for that tour was John Hiatt and he had a slide player I'd never heard of named Sonny Landreth. Let's just say it was special kinda night.

Being a serious student of all things guitar, in my opinion, no amount of shred playing will ever trump true emotional playing, and Robert Cray has that by the truckload, and a great voice to go with it, together with well crafted songs. There are millions of incredibly talented guitarists.....but it just doesn't translate into well crafted, and thought out songs. Speed and technical prowess for it's own sake seems meaningless.....speed with emotional connections......few and far between can achieve. I pray God bless and protect you all abundantly in these darkening times.

That plus being backed by an awesome rhythm section led by longtime bassist Richard Cousins.

I've always had a respect for the blues, to have this man show up when my musical ear needed expanding, and then finding out he was from the area that I was living in at the time was shocking. I found out I really love to sing the blues, and it was the Robert Cray Band - Strong Persuader album that broke that dam loose.

About then I was proven innocent and moved from the Row back to the Rock, Slippery Rock that is... and all rockers there, I was alone in my love of blues, Cray and reggae as well. Ended up road tramping west then all over this globe. World has use for a man of my, uh, capabilities, and yet, I work only for peace. Breaks my heart is this: A man of peace has to accept he will only have peace in degrees the ends must justify... nobody gets out clean. I used to make it with my profs and with their wives, everybody had a trespass pass away at the Rock, yet now, I listen to this, and yeah, good to stay in my own lane. Blue Zeus out...

I know it is a Guild semi acoustic, which is an exception to the Strat that he plays regularly. Will we ever read the interesting story here. Was his Strat stolen or so?

Funny thing about the industry is they often create a genre without any consideration of the musician creating the art. Blues was called Jazz then they used blues and had the nerv to label faith recordings as Gospel. Its so funny how all of this was our soul music. Blues created gospel because the man who invented it was Thomas Dorsey when he was with Tampa Red. The British are not as offencive as the Americans but they too have no idea other than what the industry tells them to call this music that they love so much. The pentatonic scale is a scale as old as the pyrimids. The crafting of said scale was to touch the soul and was used as communications when tribes encountered did not understand your language.
