Tarantino once called DeNiro the greatest movie maker of all time, on the basis his collaborations and output was unsurpassed by any director or actor, and I think that’s right. I think he's overrated. Pacino is much better.
@Gemini3K Жыл бұрын
@@clivet3252 To each his own I guess. But to humour your point. Pacino is also a great actor. One fo the greats toot. But at some point he was playing himself as a character as opposed to being in character. His character in Scent Of A Woman is the same as his character in Devil's Advocate & Any Given Sunday. And lets not forget the Pacino monologues we got through-out the 1990s drove that home. Not to take anything away. He's an outstanding actor. Very charismatic & engaging on screen and really fun to watch too. But Robert Deniro for me is the benchmark. He can play characters. His Meet The Parents character is nothing like his Analyze This character. His Casino character is nothing like his Cape Fear character. For me Pacino ended being like Leonardo Di Caprio and Denzel Washington. Guys who put themselves in the role. ("Denzel as...." as opposed to "Denzel is..." I hope that makes sense) De Niro has this chameleon like ability to hide himself in his roles. His ability to switch from comedy to drama is also something to note.

I’m shocked he turned up for this interview, he’s renowned for not doing interviews, you can see he’s a very shy type of person and doesn’t believe he’s anything special and is mesmerised that people are interested in him, now that been humble, young actors of today think they are saving the world or curing cancer.

What an incredible video and some great questions. I would love to meet Robert. What I do find comical is the gentleman asking 'what do you think about what is going on in Ukraine and do you think the US is doing enough?' What good is an actor's opinion on this issue which is clearly always going to be 'yes it is bad etc...' Ask questions which are relevant to the person in question.

James, the interviewer, was obviously nervous and star struck and asked superficial questions that have been asked so many times before for those who have followed Bob’s career and interviews. More interesting questions were those from the audience and not about his acting career e.g those on politics, early childhood influences, best price of advice in life etc
@mfky2 жыл бұрын
Half way down and am already off it. The "Cambridge University's" 'James' didn't even know / realize that not only De Niro doesn't even like being referred to as "Robert", not only cause its (also) being his father's name, also they didn't have a decent stable relationship, especially due to De Niro Sr. being a gay. He can't be referred to as 'Sir', as not only he's not been knighted, also cause he can't be. Reason the Queen couldn't knight Bill Gates either!!! So a bit of research work could've gone a long way!!! And then the audience's questions is why I'm off half way as well as watching it only now only to find myself being right of why on earth did De Niro even do that, an absolute misfit!!! I mean, compare this with any "Actor's Studio" interviews!!! Talk about Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, Hide and Seek, let alone him 'copying / resonating / echoing' Brando in The Godfather II. What on the earth was all that going on in there...
@tb-cg6vd2 жыл бұрын
@@mfky Er it's the Cambridge Union, a bunch of students 50 year younger than De Niro. If you were expecting a rigourous examination by film critics and movie goers who've thoroughly researched De Niro's every last breath you've come to the wrong place. And I wouldn't blame the interviewer for being nervous, De Niro is famously bad at interviews, very rarely does them and it's quite clear at his age his memory and hearing is not great. Quite frankly I think it's brilliant that he bothered to give the time to people 2 generations younger that himself a long way from his home. Anyway, a good interviewer would have steered around these issues, but the Cambridge Union guy is not a professional and if anything managed to come up with some smart quips. It's taken Graham Norton decades to get as good as he is, give the bloke a break.

@@tb-cg6vd well, they are supposed to be the best students being in Cambridge. Yep, as quite a few of the comments suggest, the interview didn't go well. Why not? Early on, James did well to tap into De Niro's sense of humour .. just snippets of it. He did well initially because the American sense of humour is particularly difficult to tap into, especially for a Brit and especially, I imagine, in the context that is the Cambridge Union, where the grey matter works overtime and, dare I say, the heart, feelings and emotions are trained to take a back seat. I was willing James to grab those moments of humour to lead De Niro into story telling, not necessarily about his films as such but about the relationships that are/were special to him, e.g. with his family, and about being Italian American, etc. De Niro really struggled to articulate intellectually, so jump to the feelings and emotions. How does he feel about being an Italian American? About his role as a father? He's a humble guy, a big kid really and began to respond well to the girl in the audience who goaded his a bit about his 'one-liners'. She tapped into his sense of fun and humour. The intellect in that room is seriously impressive and holds so much potential, but the skills of empathy, of quickly sensing an interview going down hill and instinctively knowing how to rescue it, need some work. Guys like Parkinson made it look so easy.

In a nutshell - it was a wasted opportunity.
@tb-cg6vd2 жыл бұрын
As I commented elsewhere, De Niro is very old (his hearing isn't great, his memory is failing) and has never been a great interviewee - I haven't seen a single interview of him being fluid, confident and gelling with the interviewer as say Tom Hanks does (please let me know if you have). As smart as he is he's always been a bit clunky and shy even 40 years ago. Sure the interviewer is inexperienced but what the hell are you expecting, it's a student union meeting!!! They're all kids!
@jamespotter36602 жыл бұрын
@@tb-cg6vd they're not kids. They're students who presumably are required to be articulate. Barely a single person managed to string together a coherent question.
@tb-cg6vd2 жыл бұрын
@@jamespotter3660 your presumption is incorrect; being articulate isn't a requirement to be an undergraduate at Cambrisge University or any other university that I'm aware of, please let me know which do. Then tell Bob he should have gone there.

@@tb-cg6vd so the country is fucked if they're the elite of their generation. Not sure if Robert De Niro couldn't hear them or just couldn't work out what the hell they were on about. Perhaps they should have written their questions down on paper beforehand and just read them out. The guy leading the interview got frustrated just trying to select people to ask questions. Great viewingif you like awkward encounters.
