Great observation, @donniecatalano! But let’s keep in mind that most of them became cult classics over time, earning a lot of money through DVD sales, VHS, streaming, etc. So they definitely didn’t remain flops 😉

I enjoy your videos. Truly Great work! But you missed nearly 20+ movies easily on this: About My Father, The War With Grandpa, The Comeback Trail, Wizards Of Lies, The Comedian, Hands Of Stone, Ezra, Heist, American Hustle, Being Flynn, What Just Happened, City By the Sea, Mad Dog & Glory, Guilty By Suspicion, Stanley & Iris, Jacknife, Falling In Love, The Last Tycoon, The Gang that couldn’t shoot straight & few more. 1.5 million minimum for The Untouchables. I know it’s tough lol, especially we don’t know the points they get on every movie. So love him or hate him he made a lot money more than that, gross.
@BoxOfficeJoe2 ай бұрын
Glad to hear you enjoy my work, @rustyffnj3151! Feedback like this keeps me going, thank you. And you're right. I left out quite a few of his movies. TV movies and direct-to-video releases are not in scope for this channel, but I missed some theatrical films as well in this case, although they are less famous. This was one of my earlier videos, and I've improved the recipe since then. I may redo this one sometime; De Niro deserves it...
@MrEab20103 ай бұрын
DeNiro didn't do too badly in the late 60s-early 70s, adjusted for 2024 inflation, he made enough to afford a cheap apartment in, say...Tribeca. Ironically, today's Tribeca would price out pre-1974 DeNiro. In terms of salary, dollar for dollar he has always been the best bargain in town. BTW no salary for Heat? I'd be interested in knowing.
@BoxOfficeJoe3 ай бұрын
Great observation, @MrEab2010! De Niro is one of the greatest actors ever, but by no means the highest-paid. However, he's certainly not underpaid either. His legacy lies in being iconic and becoming a part of popular culture. As for Heat, his paycheck was $7M, but it’s also mentioned in the video-perhaps you missed it. It’s at 3:21. BTW, thank you for being such an active viewer! I’ve noticed your thoughtful comments on my other videos. Is there an actor whose paychecks you’d be particularly interested in? I might prioritize him/her as a favor to you. :)

@BoxOfficeJoe4 ай бұрын
Great observation @oddsandwindsocks5905! The thing is, De Niro's legacy as one of the greatest actors is built on the depth, range, and quality of his performances, rather than the box office returns of the films he’s been in. He takes on challenging roles, and some of his best work is in films that didn’t crush it at the box office but still became classics. Stardust? Another great example of how versatile De Niro really is! Great family flick.

@boxofficejoe Could you do a Samuel L. Jackson vid next?
That's true in terms of mathematics, @leostawicki7283! But imagine working for months, investing X amount, and in the end, just getting that X amount back. Wouldn't you be disappointed? Also, box office earnings are shared between the studio and the cinemas, so the investor doesn’t get 100% back even if the movie breaks even. Of course, Angel Heart should have deserved a better fate, but that’s another topic. By the way, my label are oversimplified, and I'm working on improving them. Thank you for the feedback.

If a movie just makes its budget back it's a flop.
@BoxOfficeJoe15 күн бұрын
You are right, @adamelam6385! I used very basic math for my labelling strategy to keep the video simple, but I realized, it's more important to stay true to reality. Box office earnings are split between the cinemas and the studio. Check some of my latest videos, I'm closer to the real world formula now, and guess what happens in the comments! They point out that I'm wrong calling a movie a Flop if it made more than it's budget. Its a catch-22, but if I have to choose, I choose truth and stick with it. Thank you for your input.

The investors who took a chance on the movie

Good question @aijokker! Most of that difference goes to the studio, but they also split it with theaters, distributors, and anyone with a cut of the backend profits (actors, directors, etc.) -so it gets spread around quite a bit!

I used to like DeNiro until he decided, like Clooney, to start giving unwanted political advice. These actors have got to know, whether it is political or whatever, their advice is not respected by most thinking folks. Most of these actors barely graduated high school and their ability to draw big paychecks and act makes them experts on most everything? Give me a break. The low-lifes and most disrespected people in ancient Greece were actors. How they ever became pillars of society is beyond me.

It's just one person's opinion. You can't control what an individual says only how you react. Taylor Swift on the other hand made herself look foolish. She made an official release on A social media platform. She was counting on fans to rally all around her like a little Army of Trump haters
