The “impact” is illustrated perfectly in this scene. It’s the father who wants to teach his ideals of virtue to his child who inadvertently teaches him that violence, power, and authority determine who is right. Sonny the gangster only implies the slap, but it’s the father who leaves the unmistakeable lesson that “might makes right” planted firmly in and ON the boy’s head. The words the father says will be questioned, doubted or forgotten, but the lesson of the slap echoes for millennia throughout all of humanity.

Then you’ll wake up and realize you have the power to change for the better. Whether you’re a kid or grown up and living some place else, AA will teach you that almost every single family suffers the exact same way you are/did. Meditation helps too. We block out thoughts/memories/emotions cause that’s what our fathers do. We adopt our fathers coping mechanisms internally. Self destruct. Play victim. And manipulate. Meditation will help you wake up and realize, “Oh. This baggage im carrying on my back isn’t even mine. I should let it go.” Why would you carry someone else’s luggage? You don’t have to throw it back at him or anyone else. You can simply set it down on the ground, and let it go. Learn to let go. Then, you will find peace.

Presence of a **good** father in a household is important. There are fathers present in households that sometimes do more damage than good such as deadbeat ones or alcoholics, etc. The real gold in the world is a healthy, functioning family that stays together through the good and bad and supports one another.

Working men are a bunch of bitches! Not all, but the ones with any sort of fixed schedule are. In other words, 99% of "men" work under some predetermined schedule. Another thing to realize is that everyone is replaceable. If Elon Musk, Bezos, Albert Einstein, Newton, Alexander the great were never born... we'd still be where we are today. You truly gotta do something special to stand out and as of now... I can't name ONE MAN who did something truly special in the past 10,000 years. For every "nobel laureate" there are hundreds working on the same project. For every multi-billion dollar entrepreneur there are 10,000 qualified (even more so) people to take over. What are you gonna do to stand out?

I told him I’ll never wanna be like you ever. You got nothing to show for it, he chuckled and said look around. I got house and a car and food. I watched this movie many times before and this scene in particular always hits home.. my father was my hero hard working honest living straight guy.. no drinking, gambling not even smoking always took care of his family always cared for and put his wife and children first he gave the best life as he could to his family.. I realized much of this when he passed away everyone loved him I miss him everyday and see him in my dreams beautiful man appreciated him while he was alive also more after his passing never will ever be forgotten to my children n their children so on.. my father is my hero

This is so awesome. It tugs at my heartstrings every time. This is the importance of a good dad. Not just a boy who has aged. But a man with character and integrity who fights for his son. Then teaching him, with tough love, what it takes to be a real man. 😢

So true. How on earth my parents pulled it off will forever remain a mystery. 8 kids.. one salary. It was a comfortable life, but not an extravagant one. And road trip vacations on top of that. Thanks Mom and Pop. (Edit: They'd only planned on 6.. but the last one turned out to be THREE.)

I second that! One of nine kids on one salary, never went hungry and enjoyed TONS of love. Real love, tough sometimes but always fair. Thank you, Mom and Dad.

I had a familiar upbringing but with less siblings (Four of us boys) and twins instead of triplets! My twin brother and I were supposed to be a girl but obviously biology threw up the middle finger on that! Ha! My childhood was a wealthy one but not in terms of currency. I had a fortune in love and at the end of the day, that matters far more than anything money will buy.

Powerful. The son’s tone and voice changing after the slap basically saying I love you dad I just got confused and now I know better along with De Niro’s tone and intense delivery hit’s me in the heart strings every time. Perfectly captures that tough love father and son bond we as men all have to go through at some point perfectly. If you know you know..

This scene is a double-whammy in that it not only displays the profound acting chops of Palmenteri & DeNiro, but it encapsulates the impressive prowess of both men behind the camera (DeNiro directing a screenplay written by Palmenteri). This collaboration is one of the great examples of on-screen talent performing their own creative artistry.
