Director Chris Smith and producers Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, and Kevin Ford discuss "Sr.", a Spotlight selection of this year’s festival, with NYFF Artistic Director, Dennis Lim.
Rarely do films about artists allow the kind of poignant intimacy seen in this tender yet fittingly irreverent portrait of the life and career of Robert Downey Sr., the fearless, visionary American director who set the standard for counterculture comedy in the sixties and seventies. An inspired collaboration between celebrated documentarian Chris Smith (American Movie); the subject’s son, Robert Downey Jr.; and the man himself, who’s occasionally shown working on his own version of the movie we’re watching, “Sr.” functions both as an elegy for the rule-flouting underground icon, who passed away at age 85 in July 2021, and as a testament to his tireless creative spirit. Capturing its subjects’ refreshing candor about aging, past struggles with addiction, and the ups and downs of working in Hollywood, Smith’s film is an emotional depiction of a father-son bond that remained strong, pragmatic, and deeply loving to the end. A Netflix release.
All NYFF60 Documentaries are presented by HBO.

This movie was beautiful. Beautiful and complicated. Really makes you think about the complexities of relationships and how we cope with who people are in order to have peace within ourselves and good relationship with our parents or family members. At least that’s how I related to it. Seriously made an impact on me. Especially when RDJ’s son said he wanted to make a memory with his grandfather. Shows how his parents speak to them about death and the importance of time with our loved ones. Ugh it was very sweet.

Robert is an amazing person. The way he tells all these stories and other things about himself and his father, and how emotionally he does it… I would say that he shows his emotions without showing them. It seems that it was very difficult for him to make this documentary because of all the relationships between him and his father earlier, and because of the legacy of the senior, which he definitely cannot lose, and because of the love and respect for his father, and obviously because of the senior’s death, which he was going through very, very hard and painful during all this time. Can’t wait to see this great work of them! ❤❤❤

7:58 I think when the interviewer was talking about what happened in 2021, he was asking about Jimmy's and Downey sr's death's, Susan lost her Dad too, I think it might of been 2021 or the year before, and Susan answers by talking about mostly covid. Robert, anything emotional Susan is going to handle. 💔 Robert would of know his father was on his way out, but Jimmy must of been a hell of a shock.

It's encouraging to hear that they tried to infuse some of the spirit of Robert Downey, Sr.'s own films into this documentary. His work is so strange and playful that a more traditional documentary probably wouldn't feel appropriate. I'm very curious to see it. The Criterion Collection released a five-film box set called Up All Night with Robert Downey Sr. about ten years ago, and it's still in print. And those five films plus another are currently streaming on The Criterion Channel. There and elsewhere on KZbin are a few videos of Paul Thomas Anderson interviewing him about those films in the box set at the time of the box set's release.

Funny how the interview is as chaotic as the film itself. It´s a film about a filmmaker filming a filmmaker, or trying to, while the filmmaker is algo thinking about his film, or something like that. It also manages to be really moving. RDJ is one of the most charismatic people on Earth, but here he is just a son trying to understand and please his father (who, by the way, is dying).
