Robert Eisenmann on Jesus' brother James

Robert Eisenman is an American biblical scholar, theoretical writer, historian, archaeologist, and "road" poet. He is currently Professor of Middle East Religions, Archaeology, and Islamic Law and director of the Institute for the Study of Judaeo-Christian Origins at California State University Long Beach.
Eisenman led the campaign to free up access to the Dead Sea Scrolls in the 1980s and 90s, and, as a result of this campaign, is associated with the theory that combines Essenes with Palestinian messianism (or what some might refer to as "Palestinian Christianity") - a theory opposed to establishment or consensus scholarship.
Before this, Eisenman spent five years "on the road" in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East as far as India, encapsulating all these things in his poetic travel Diario (1959-62), published in 2007 by North Atlantic Books, Berkeley, California and called The New Jerusalem, in which he describes the San Francisco "Beat" scene in 1958-59, Paris when still a "moveable feast", working on kibbutzim in Israel, the Peace Corps, and several voyages on the overland route to India.

The word "fiction"is misleading. The word "story" is better. Jesus used a narrative method of teaching and his words were not written until much later. Oral tradition is also historical, since even written tradition has context.

Most of the Christians I know are VERY familiar with Paul's letter to the Galatians, but they are invested in Paul's view of Jesus and therefore side with Paul on the issue of keeping the Law. As Paul said, if you can be "saved" by keeping the Law, then Jesus is unnecessary. The problem is not Christian ignorance of the contents of Galatians but rather their investment in the doctrine that we are saved by faith without the works of the Law. If you believe that, then those who promote Law-keeping have to be seen as the bad guys.

I bought Eisenmans 'James the brother of Jesus' book about two years ago. As soon as I had finished it I started it again it is so fascinating. Being as much about Christianities origins and the internecine squabbles between James 'Torah/law' faction and Paul's 'anything goes' one as it is about James himself makes it one of the most fascinating Theology books I've ever read and I would advise anyone interested in Western Theology to buy it. I found on early (luckily enough) that it is invaluable to have a copy of the Bible, Josephus' 'Antiquities', a book collection of the Dead sea scrolls and the (sadly for me only online copies) of the 'Pseudo-Clementines' (as well as many other authors writings I don't have) to 'fact check' the information contained, it really pulls away the veil of Roman dogma that Western Christianity (of all denominations, Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox etc.) had drawn across the battle for the two competing versions of the emerging religion, and puts the then beloved James (who after Jesus died actually led the movement/religion for 30+ years from his Jerusalem base) back as the rightful heir to the emerging religion that his brother Jesus had previously led. It also details the sad events that led an initially pro-Jewish group (that included Gentiles) to eventually became an anti-Semitic religion after the Romans destroyed Jerusalem as well as Judea itself. Using the writings from 'Church fathers', Josephus, and the Dead sea scrolls it cuts through 2000 years of excepted dogma to show us how characters like Saul\Paul went from being the groups number one enemy to convert and eventually a rabble rouser who tore the movement apart, in the first of it's many dogmatic splits As I said above, this is THE book for those interested in Western Theology, making this the best religious read of the 3rd millennium so far.

When I first tried to grasp the NT and encountered Paul, I ran back to the OT. After a first trying to deal with the DSS, I thought right away that Paul was the lier spouter. I also conducted a study on Pontius Pilot. You have do the reading yourself, as you so rightly suggest. It is, however, no small task to take on this literature of this depth.

Why would Paul need to teach circumcision when his ministry is to gentiles? During the Jerusalem council in the book of Acts, James is clearly in charge and prescribes for Gentiles something very much like the Noahide laws. How was Paul not consistent in his Gospel to the gentiles with that? James and Peter were sent to their fellow Jews, and Paul to the gentiles. Two very different agendas really.

I can't agree that the gospels were written by the Paulines: Matthew is goes out of its way to enunciate pro-Torah teachings -it almost reads as a direct polemic -_-against-_- Paul/Saul- and then the gospel of John's incessant focus on the Judaic/Deuteronomical requirement of 'witness' / 'testimony' / 'Rabbinical ordination' seems written (to this impartial reader anyway) for the express purpose of stripping Saul's credibility. Otherwise, I generally agree. Paul def did co-opt and rebrand the Jesus movement.

James, the Lord's brother by the same mother was not an 'Essene'. James the Lord's brother was a true born again believer and preached Christ crucified and resurrected and sitting at the right hand of the Father. James was not an 'Essene'. If you read the Rank-Raglan mythotype you will find MANY New Testament stories that are repeated from earlier Bronze Age mythologies. Paul knew very well these were required to sell the new religion to the Greeks and Romans. Many Christians today seem adamntly convinced that these story motifs first appeared in the 1st century when in fact they had been around for centuries.

It's not correct to say "Bible tells" for all the verses which are recorded in the Bible. What was revealed by God and words of prophets, words of good people, etc, can be treated as Word of God. Words and opinions, comments of the different people etc, can not be treated as word of God. If James was an Essene then why did Paul meet him in Jerusalem and not in the desert where the Essenes lived to be apart from the impurity of the cities? Also Robert Eisenmann seems oblivious to the possibility James kept the law not because that's what Jesus taught but simply to avoid the same fate that befell his brother! James is living in Jerusalem of all places, were he not to keep the law he would have been hounded out of town. James fight with Paul can be seen in the same light. Perhaps James wanted early Christians to keep the law so they wouldn't be hunted down by other Jews who *did* keep it. The Jewish revolt of 66 AD and later in 115 AD are clear proof of the tinder box that underpinned Judaism at the time. I'm grateful for being privy to attend a few of Professor Eisemann's class in 90's upon his invitation after purchasing his well documented and researched book on James the borther of Jesus which open so many doors of critically understanding Judeo-christian origins. Now it's easier to grasp or better comprehend the geopolitical atmosphere on how Christianity actually evolved and important characters like James that played a more substantial role in the ministry of his famous brother Jesus after the crucifixion. I like Eisenmann looking for historical James but he overlooks something that maybe he doesn't understand is real and that is the power of the Holy Spirit. He says the gospels are fiction or literary but they are the history of the Holy Spirit coming on God's people. You have to have experienced the power of the Holy Spirit powerfully in the sense that you cannot stand up under the power as did the priests in the Temple in Kings in the Bible when they could not minister to the people because the glory cloud was so powerful to know that the New Testament is not normal history but is history of the tangible power of God. The power descended on Jesus and remained with him at his baptism by John the Baptist and it is the power remaining with him that makes Jesus the anointed one. Having experienced the power I can say that though I love Eisenmann as a source of normal biblical history readers should understand that Eisenmann does not understand the history of the Holy Spirit. He believes the church is just brain washing and doesn't understand the history of the coming of the power of God. I do agree with him that we need more of James the Jewish James and less of St Paul the apostle to the gentiles now the gospels have been evangelize around the world and I do believe that the last move of the Holy Spirit is about the Jewish Jesus. The supernatural in the New Testament is definitely not fiction.

Oh, wow…I have been a fan of Eisenman’s work for a while and knew he went to Cornell before joining the Beats, moving to Paris, and then going on the road. I am also an alumnus of Cornell Architecture, where Peter Eisenman (an alumnus) has been a visiting lecturer and given guest seminars for years…in general Peter is worshipped by the Cornell Architecture community (first year studio = “yo dawg, I heard you like superimposed grids…”), alongside other alumni and sometimes-lecturers like Richard Meier. I myself really looked up to Peter Eisenman’s work, studied it in detail, and it influenced my own work. But I had no idea these two Eisenmans (Eisenmen? lol) were brothers! What an immensely talented family! PS I know Robert Eisenman is very well known in certain circles and his work stands on its own, but with his brother’s “starchitect” levels of fame, and his anti-establishment stance and lifetime spent fighting and being persecuted by the academic cartel that trafficks and controls this corner of Academia, I wonder if this author of “James, the Brother of Jesus” sometimes feels like “Robert, the Brother of Peter”. 🤔 I get the sense Eisenman feels a lot of _pathos_ for James, possibly even connects with him on some level.

Eisenman's book is an excellent read. He looks at the Maccabeans, the Essenes, the Talmud, the Torah, Josephus, the Bible and also the Dead Sea Scrolls. What he has established for me is that James the Just was a messianic figure. This means that Jesus and Thomas, twin younger brothers, were greatly infuenced by their older brother.

Aramaic & biblical Hebrew don't differentiate between brothers & half-brothers, although biblical Greek does as well as giving another word for cousins. Thus, this might partially refute Eisenman's argument that Jesus (a.k.a. Yeshua since Eisenman insists upon Hebrew names) wasn't divine. Then again, if one believes in an all-powerful & mighty God of creation, which some of us do because of how He has shaped & guided our lives, all things are possible. Thus, if Elohim Adonai wished to endow Jesus with divinity, this certainly wouldn't depend upon who His earthly father was (whether it was Joseph or an unidentified human male). Yes. Except the revolutionary memes in Gospel of Mark (the allegedly most primitive gospel) doesn't fit Essenism very well, but instead in what Josephus alleges is "like Phariseism", namely the "fourth sect" containing Zealotry, but also other stuff, such as common property, never submitting to any other "king" than God, etc.. The Qumran sect were more like some extreme Sadducees sect. Everybody were against the Romans at the First Jewish-Roman war, including the Herodians, so the Qumran joined the rebellion and then were slaughtered by the Romans, since every sect fought the Herodians, their allied the Pharisees and each other. The conflict between the Qumranites and the Pharisees was probably of the same kind as the conflict between the Sadducees and the Pharisees: it originated in the persecution of lower-middle class Pharisees under Alexander Jannaeus and the retaliation against the priestly upper-class Sadducees under his widow Alexandra Salome. It has little to do with the poor peoples Messianism/Zealotry.

As a muslim listening to this I hear nothing but things which remind me of Islam. Yes I am biased, I know. Not quite James was Jesus' half-brother; as Joseph was a widow when he married Mary (most Holy). Jesus was the only of Joseph's sons referred to as Jesus son of Mary -note the emphasis on Mary. The title "Just" was applied to Joseph and inherited by James -not Jesus -Jesus was not Joseph's first born but Jesus was Mary's first born -so Jesus was a first born. Lastly to this day in Spain and Latin America (as it was in Biblical times), 1st cousins are referred to as Cousin-Brothers (Primo-Hermanos) -so when in the NT and OT there is reference to brother, it could also be cousin (Cousin-Brother). Its a polite way of recognizing one as illegitimate. This is and was important because Jewish Law in regards to that persons interaction with the community in the future is guided and guarded. James the Just is also in the Gospel of Thomas. Jesus's humanity and mortality are denied just as it is for any religious icon. The Romanization of Jesus follows the Hellenization of Jesus. Moreover, this follows the vast diversity of Christianities in the first century AD.

Is Eisenmann naive or disingenuous? "Brother", in very many places in the NewTestament, AND among many native peoples, means kinsman. That is basic. And "brother" also means one who shares the same theology. There is no reason to think that Jesus had full blood brothers and sisters. None. Joseph was a man advanced in years when he married 15-year-old Mary. He would not have been single his whole life. He would have married and had children. These are Jesus' (half) brothers. Moreover, Jesus commends Mary to Joseph as He dies on the cross. All women at that time needed a male protector. If He had had brothers He would not have needed John to protect His mother. This is all basic information. I find it hard to believe that Mr Eisenmann is unaware of this.

@@mattm.5436 - I've read most of "James, The Brother Of Jesus". It's a pretty weighty tome. It got me thinking about the subject, for sure. I came down on the opposite side from him. Paul's gospel was "Justification by Faith". James wrote a polemic against it. Both positions made it into the New Testament yet they contradict one another. In every one of God's Gardens there exists a Tree of Temptation. We are the ones who choose whether to eat of it. In our Garden, there's the Epistle of James - an otherwise BEAUTIFUL work but containing a few drops of poison that will kill all who swallow it. The Tree of Knowledge in God's first Garden had such fruit. It seems to be how God rolls.

Mary is the "perpetual virgin Mary" she took a vow and Joseph honored her vow. if Mary had mor children they would have been with her at the foot of the cross with St John. why else did Jesus amount St John as her care taker. the other alleged sons were traditional tasked with that function. or perhaps you are correct and those other siblings were bad boys and not equal to the task. perhaps they were drinking beer and shooting pool.

John does not like to use his name (jealously, perhaps?), but it is likely that Mary lived with her sons James, Jude, and Simeon in Jerusalem until her death..

Notice that Eisenman never talks about the 600 pound gorilla in the room - the difference between Paul's doctrine and James' doctrine. Instead of accusing Paul of being a big hater, mean, and envious, how about discussing the difference between Paul's theology and James' theology? He can't do it because he doesn't know the difference. To him (as with most people) he sees James and Paul as members of the same church. They were not. The problem with our churches is that they don't teach the difference between Paul's doctrine and James' doctrine. As a wise woman once said, "You can't teach what you don't know."
