Not quite rags. His father was a successful businessman who provided a well-to-do lifestyle for his family. Before going to Hollywood, Evans ran Evan-Picone women's ready-to-wear in Manhattan. Norma Shearer spotted him around the pool at the Beverly Hills Hotel and he briefly became a male starlet, playing a bullfighter in The Sun Also Rises in about 1957. The documentary film, "The Kid Stays In The Picture," is a fascinating portrait. And the stories he does NOT tell, and will probably take to his grave, are the most tantalizing of all.

This appearance by Robert Evans was before he developed a penchant for wearing those turtlenecks and silver bolo ties that he now fancies. As documented in his autobiographies The Kid Stays In The Picture and The Fat Lady Sang, Nicholson became a close friend of Evans and remains so. Contrary to the comment below, I believe that Evans' input did contribute significantly to the success of the two Polanski films that he produced: Chinatown and Rosemary's Baby, although the latter film was made when Evans was head of production at Paramount. I also believe that he was indirectly responsible for the success of Coppola's The Godfather.

If he knows nothing about business...then explain how be negotiated the purchase of Lucilee Ball's production company for $10M...and the purchase of Simon and Schuster (out from under Universal) for $11M. Those two deals put more than $14 BILLION in revenue in Paramount's pockets over 30 years. $14 BILLION. Those are two of the most monumental deals in the history of the industry...and Evans did them both....

@blindtimes Yeah....Evans SAYS that. After reading his book, I certainly take any of his tales with a grain of salt. I think his memories are sketchy, at best...perhaps even a little bit delusional. I'm sure the truth is somewhere in the middle. I think too many people look at him as some sort of demi-god as his credentials looks great on paper, while there's a lot of back story to his success.

Exaplin to me why he was the one that ordered Coppola to reshot the Godfather, since the original cut Coppola presented to the studio looked NOTHING like the Oscar wining classic film we have come to know and love?!? And of course making one hit after the other over the course of many years while he ran Paramount.... seriously, you need to stop thinking that your ignorant opinions equal demonstrable facts!

@coltsuperocean10 I agree. From what I can tell he's rewarded for his name and his name only. This guy wanted to change the ending to Chinatown, was adamant that Brando shouldn't be in The Godfather, yet he takes most if not all of the credit for these great films.
@stevemcnary7963
@stevemcnary7963 2 жыл бұрын
Actually it was Polanski who made screenwriter Robert Towne change the ending of Chinatown. Towne originally wanted Evelyn Mulrey to kill her father at the end & Polanski said NO WAY!! "Nobody will remember this movie if the ending isn't tragic". He was so right!!!

BUT, THAT'S UNBELIEVABLE THAT HE WOULD COME TO BE THAT WAY, FOR IT SEEMS , BEING A MOVIE-PRODUCER, IS EVANS' TALENT. EVANS WAS PRODUCING AND MAKING GOOD CLASSICAL MOVIES. WHY? SO, WHAT HAPPENED ?
