You can say what you want. Everybody who plays guitar knows it is impossible to get that good in 6 months. After 6 months he could play everything he heard? Before these 6 months he couldn’t play a lick. And he practiced already before. I think we just need to accept that some riddles can’t be solved
@jtostros
@jtostros 3 жыл бұрын
The guy was struggling to play two notes at a time after he got "good." And he was playing music that was built around two-three chords. Ad he was working from a musical repertoire much smaller than the ones that exist today. That can be done in a matter of three weeks. That fact that it took him around half a year is confirmation of the fact that he had very little talent before he became "talented."

😂 blues is fairly easy to learn. Anyone can sit on one chord. Say an Em, one can literally learn many licks over that chord and sound phenomenal in one week. The only difference with some people is determination to actually be better.

Sorry to bust the myth but Roberts grandson has shed a lot of light on the old rumors. Robert actually moved away for a year or two and went back to his hometown where he and his good friend, Ike Zimmerman (or Zinnerman) would live and play together. Ike’s living relatives said to have remembered Robert and actually were under the impression he was family. Robert and Ike were said to have played in graveyards at night because the people there wouldnt bother them. When he came back to Son House and Willie Brown he had lots of practice and time to learn. Robert told people he sold his soul because he knew it would gain some attention. He also wasnt the first to claim to sell his soul.

There are a lot of modern-day music artists who have stated for themselves present-day that they have essentially sold their soul for fame. Bob Dylan is on youtube with a video saying that very thing, for instance. Many others, too.
@MisterRlGHT

I'll go you one better: Robert Johnson NEVER claimed he sold his soul to the devil -- that was Tommy Johnson who said he exchanged his soul for musical talent, but over the years the lines have been blurred by half-assed authors until that myth got saddled on the wrong Johnson. Don't take my word for it, look it up (being sure to accept no quotes that don't name the person speaking -- note how this dumb video cites all kinds of allegations without naming any speaker for any of them).

I don't believe Robert Johnson sold his soul, if memory serves, he had given up on music, settled into life as a sharecropper, having fallen in love with a young woman. She died suddenly, I can't remember how, but he disappeared for some months, returning to play as hid. It's said the Blues has a magic, born from a soul in pain. Given the way life was in those days, I'd say his soul was tormented, devil or no. There is a certain beauty in things proceeding from a loss of hope, I hear that in his music. He may have lost hope, but he never stopped looking for it.

You will be good yes, but not revolutionary. Robert had more than just practice. It took Eric Clapton many years to play delta blues like Johnson. And Clapton was claimed God as a guitar player. What does that make johnson at only the age of 25-27 making that kind of music? As a seasoned guitarist myself, it gives me absolute chills to hear Johnson’s music every time. The older I get, the more I realize he may have been telling the truth in those devil songs.

Robert Johnsons great grandson actually debunked this myth, in saying that Robert actually went back to Hazlehurst Mississippi and hooked up with a guitar mentor named Isaac Zimmerman, and he spent 3 years learning under Zimmerman. The whole myth was spawned when he came back and played and they said you must've sold your soul to the devil. The lyrics in his songs don't actually mean his alleged pact with the devil, but his internal struggles he dealt with by singing the blues. And about the people that said he admitted selling his soul, are you really gonna trust every word heard?

I personaly think that the story about "selling your soul to the devil" is a good metaphora, and its so good that the whole music genre of rock and roll was built upon it, because people are always attracktive to something dangerous, deep and mystic, that was the story that created rock, but a good metaphoric story, and Robert just used that to become even more popular. But the one main thing about the music he created; people were so amazed by his music because it that time the music he was playing was considered like everything, but let me just get you rough example, imagine and yngwie malmsteen travel to past in the year of 1930 an imaginr he played those ultrafast licks, people would consider him a god of guitar, its all about perspective, thats my opinion, i think that stories about selling souls is just a good metaphora to get attention..

That's it John Erikson. In an interview I read and copied into a word doc, Robert Johnsons grandson explains just that. There are however many things in this world that can take possession of any person, psychic, emotional, mental forces, both human forces and other. Ones soul essence is forced to take a kind of step back from the human animal and spirit when one is suffering, or one may be ignoring and not connecting properly with ones natural divine nature. Gods divine nature is always there, learning to tune in and connect is the key. However it cannot stop us from doing what any person does nor control natures heavier and darker elements and nature, it is simply there. It doesn't judge nature the way we do, however it can help us move away from heavy forces and influences. It was the divine that gave Robert his gift and aided the cultivation of his talent and hunger to learn music. He was a black man living in an very superstitious culture. Black african Americans did sometimes use Voodou and all believed in the powers of Voodou. Like anything of the divine, it can be used for good or bad, depending on where the person is at. Robert along with the rest of his fellow African Americans was also in a very cruel white culture. The notion of Satan and the Devil was naturally present in the human spirit because of the so called 'evil' that possessed humans treatment and attitudes toward each other. This destructive, 'evil' possessed nature is still rife but in a high tech modern environment. Thus in many ways the song remains the same. The problem of seeing something clearly and which arises, is when I see simplistic christian people creating a picture or idea that gives little real insight into situations and the reality's involved. I'm not wishing to put em down, however it can come across a bit primary school christian philosophy, rather than spiritual perspectives that are deeply insightful and experienced with life

It's curious that Keith Richards is in this video. My late older brother, who was a career guitarist, recorded a version of Robert Johnson's "You Can't Kill Me Twice" with Keith Richards at his house. I showed up at my brother's deathbed the day before he died-with a Bible!

I think it's difficult for most to understand African American history and how we process religion, even today younger African Americans don't understand it, let alone whites, who use our music as karaoke to fame, that any of you believe you can comment and decide who he was and what truly happened it ludicrous. Just my old {black} opinion.

European girl here of mixed ancestry. I'm majoring in American Studies and am very much interested in how African Americans understand religion. I would like to write my thesis on the subject - not as a means of furthering my own career, but to genuinely provide a stage for the vast cultural heritage of African Americans. Too many people are only interested in white American history. Would it be possible for me to conduct an interview with you on it?
