“Darwin, diet, disease, and dollars: how the sugar in processed foods changed society”
The Western diet is a primary factor in the etiology of metabolic syndrome. This lecture will explain the two phenomena most closely associated with the metabolic syndrome; that is, leptin resistance, which leads to obesity; and insulin resistance, which leads to chronic metabolic disease (diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease; and likely cancer and dementia as well). In each case, we will explore the specific relation between dietary sugar and the pathogeneses of these two phenomena, in order to explain how these two processes, which in the past were adaptive, but which in our current dietary environment have become maladaptive. These maladaptations belie our current global pandemic of chronic metabolic disease, which threatens the healthcare budget of every country.
We will also investigate how the food industry has usurped these evolutionary mechanisms for their own purposes, in order to foment continued consumption and our current global health crisis.

Dr. Lustig is the bomb. His lectures should be compulsory listening for all medical students. I'm amazed how hardly anyone has heard of him.

+regina george To be fair, I argue over half the views are ppl watching it who already saw it--never bad since it's a lot to, uhmmm, digest... and students I teach (when I teach nutrition courses to med students and nursing and dental school kids) tend to watch him 2-5x depending on how quickly they get the info... and how much they freak out in the best way!

This is the best lecture I have reviewed after hundreds of hours on studying our metabolic pathways. First time I heard or read of leptin in regard to satiety. If I have only 2 hours to teach people what is happening to them in regards to hunger, satiety and nutrition, I will this one.

This great lecture answered a question for me regarding fructose . I couldn't understand how one type of sugar - sucrose - was being metabolised in a completely different way from another - fructose !? It is obviously an evolutionary development that allows the bounty of fruit in late summer to be utilizised rapidly for fat storage prior to winter with its calorie shortages , or for hibernation . In nature this is a beautiful adaptation , but when fructose is available in the diet all year around and more dangerously found as fructose syrup in commonly eaten processed foods , then this adaptation becomes very dangerous . Thank you Dr Lustig .

There is an enormous number of people that stand to lose a lot of money if Dr Lustig's message becomes common knowledge. The healthcare industry makes i'ts money from selling pills and procedures to sick people, not selling meat and vegetables to healthy people.

Sadly they are not imaginary and you can read about them in such books as "Malignant Medical Myths", "The Pioppi Diet", "The Salt Fix", "Fiber Menace" and "Misguided Medicine" and "Medical Myths Doctors believe". I'm so-called 'Type-1' diabetic and Dr Richard K Bernstein's "Diabetes Solution" as well as his KZbin series "Dr Bernstein's Diabetes University" debunks such beliefs as protein causes kidney damage and that diabetics should therefore restrict their protein intake. Just don't get me started on the red meat cancer nonsense and five-a-day fruit and vegetable mantra.

A bit of sophistry in there. Sugar alone isn't the problem, although it will do a number on your teeth unless you take care of them. The problem is meat or sugar in combination with meat. Yes, it can be stuffed into your stomach, but so can poisonous mushrooms. There are some organic life that we can eat, and others we should avoid at all costs. Meat is one that we should avoid. Yes, it is possible for the body to adapt and even thrive on eating meat, however it will be short-lived before the problems that Lustig mentioned surface and can remain a problem for decades.

My mother ate land animal meat or fish almost every day. She ate a lot of vegetables, too, but not much processed food because we couldn't afford it. Everything was made at home.. She turned 90 in January. She stopped driving about five years ago. Since the near death of her youngest son a few years ago, her memory has been slipping, but she walks unassisted and takes care of herself as she still lives in her own home with two younger relatives. Pills were foreign to her up until a few years ago, so she's lived a healthy life and brought eleven kids into the world. We can say meat is much different today than in the 80s and before then, but grass-fed animals would still be okay to eat today.
