Was taken to the cinema by my great aunt to see Not As A Stranger when I was about 10 years old in Wood Green and nearly fell off the seat when I saw Robert Mitchum. Had a great crush on this great actor and followed his career till the end. Never been anyone on this earth like Robert Mitchum - I'm now 77 and still adore him. Wish he was still here!

And that last scene in a jeep at end of the film The Longest Day (about D-Day) when he lights a cigarette, and as it dangles from his lips he says to his corporal, "Run me up the hill, kid."

Oooh ..that’s good news Jill , and yep all the blokes wanted to be him & the lady’s absolutely loved him .. if you haven’t already try Mitch’s biography called ‘Baby I don’t Care’ .. got it down in Australia so its definitely out there for sale , it’s great read about a real bloke.

He served Stateside in WWII as a Medic in a MEP Station. He was awarded an ARCOM. He was the sort of man who cared a lot more than he ever let on.

I saw him on a talk show many years ago, telling a story about sitting in a pub/restaurant in England. He was alone, thinking he was not being noticed, when all of a sudden, everyone in the restaurant rose and bowed. He stood up, thinking they were fans, but the Queen of England had just entered with her entourage. He said he was very embarrassed that he thought all the hoopla was for him! He was very cool!

Robert Mitchum was a legendary story teller. Many of his co-stars have commented that he told wonderful stories on the movie set and off. However many actors wanted and needed time to prepare for their next scene and Bob would keep chatting right up until his co-stars call. Whereas when it was his next scene he simply walked on set did his lines and resumed his story/tale/yarn...ha. He said he acquired his love of singing from riding the rails across country looking for work pre-Hollywood. Which was the source of many of his stories.

Robert Mitchum loved England and used spend alot of time here. He loved English country pubs. A friend of mine was out with his wife one saturday afrtoon and they called into a riverside pub about 40 miles west of London and there was Bob Mitchum holding court joking and singing in the bar. This was in the 80s so he must have been nearly 70 and my mate said he beat every man in the pub at arm wrestling.

Not that I saw it at that age but I do remember Robert becoming my idol in the 50's - so many of us tried to emulate his cool and slightly laconic style. RIP Robert and hopefully we'll meet you for a little wine drinkin' one day!

On this day in 1967 {August 13th} "Little Ole Wine Drinker, Me" by Dean Martin entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #78; and on September 3rd, 1967 it peaked at #38 {for 2 weeks} and spent 6 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #5 on both the Billboard Adult Contemporary Tracks chart and in Australia... Actor Robert Mitchum' version entered the Top 100 on August 6th, 1967 at #98, the next week it peaked at #96 and then fell off the chart... Between 1948 and 1969 Mr. Martin had thirty-nine Top 100 records; seven made the Top 10 with two reaching #1; "Memories Are Made of This" for 6 weeks in 1956 and "Everybody Loves Somebody" for 1 week in 1964... He just missed having a third #1 when “That’s Amore” peaked at #2 in 1953… R.I.P. Mr. Martin, born Dino Paul Crocetti, {1917 - 1995} and Mr. Mitchum {1917 - 1997}...
