Very interesting take from Plant! Kashmir, in the light, the wanton song and Achilles last stand of course with all of my love dedicated to his beautiful son who should still be with us! I think all of these are brilliant with in the light being the most underrated, its tremendous! They have so many truly great songs ,its impossible to say which 5 or 10 are thier best but its subjective and depends on your mood! One night you want to rock and you put on presence or physical graffiti then something a bit lighter like houses of the holy or in through the outdoor! And then you want a mixture of thier great diversity and you put on 4 or 1 or get blown away with the live album! This is why Zep is hands down the best rock band in history! ❤🎉💯👍🏻🇺🇸

To me, the song that embodies everything Zeppelin was is Ramble On. It has it all--the subdued Celtic folklore of the verses with the reflective lyrics, and then the epic explosive hard rock of the chorus, and the ending, where they would all cut loose. It just doesn't get any better than that.
@jmeakin4
@jmeakin4 Ай бұрын
@piscesman54 - 'Ramble On' has perhaps the best orchestration of any work in the past century. Each part is stellar, especially the bass line, and when combined, make for a virtually perfect song. Like Led Zeppelin's musicians, the parts each have top virtuosity; yet, the sum total is greater than each of those parts.
@piscesman54
@piscesman54 Ай бұрын
@@jmeakin4 Absolutely. Yes, the bass line crafted by JPJ is probably one of the best ever written. They way it counters the melody is simply brilliant, so musical and in such good taste and sensitivity.

'Tea for One' has always been my favorite track off of Presence. Jimmy's light stringed, almost background solo evokes an image of a teardrop falling through a blue spotlight. 'Achilles', while a powerful testimony and proof of Zep's musicianship and skills, always came across to me like they were trying to outdo their previous works, such as 'Kashmir' and 'Stairway'. And one of my favorite Zep tunes, never even played on commercial radio TMK, is 'Four Sticks'. Plant's howling, screeching lyrics, with Jimmy's 4 on the floor rhythmic groove and his echoing, acoustic change-up? Oh man! 'And when the owls cry in the night, Oh baby, baby when the pines begin to cry...' A truly magical song.

I think presence is one of their more underrated albums to casual fans. Hots for nowhere, Royal Orleans, tea for one and Achilles don't get the love they deserve. And while four sticks is great I am not quite sure what you mean about Jimmy's four on the floor groove? The song starts in 5/4 and the chorus is in 6/8. Or well some count it as 5/8 and 6/8 but its definitely not a 4/4 four on the floor type of feel.

@@ronnociar1216 Glad you've pointed this out. I was very happy to see that Robert is now acknowledging the particular excellence of "Achilles Last Stand". During a past band reunion performance, he is said to have told Page and Jones that he didn't want to performance this one because it was "too heavy metal". Page and Jones are said to have groaned in disappointment at this. Going back even further to when the "Presence" album containing this song as the lead off track was being recorded, Plant has been said to get so excited at the possibilities presented here (no pun intended) that he jumped up and fell off of the wheelchair he had been in since the car crash he was involved in while vacationing in Greece with his family. So evidently his opinion here has changed at least twice, even further supporting your point, here.

LZ was constantly looking to push the boundaries of what music could sound like. They NEVER accepted their previous accomplishments. There are really no wrong answers when someone names their five favourite Led Zeppelin songs but my list would be quite different: When The Levee Breaks, The Rain Song, The Rover, Houses of the Holy and Stairway To Heaven. Why so many people seem to be retconning Stairway To Heaven in a negative light I just don't understand. It is an all-time classic and perhaps the greatest rock song ever. Plant is entitled to his opinion of it ,as he essentially wrote it all, but I believe it might be the best example of a song that builds in tempo to a totally satisfying and still unexpected crescendo, a song imbued with feeling and meaning with incredible use of acoustic, 12-string and electric guitars plus the immortal evocative lyrics that remain open to interpretation to this day.

Well… the two songs from Presence were their peak, imo. Their best rock song in Achilles, yes, showing what they were capable of, and I believe what they were shooting for all along. They reached it with that one. Also, tea was their best blues song. A mature, beautiful song. His best blues solo. Those two alone are worth the price of the album alone. They reach d the top of their mountain with the those, and what came after was anticlimactic.

Regarding Stairway to Heaven, I would like to ask Robert (and I have personal experience of the following) : Have you after time been able to listen and hear the song as a single entity rather then just hearing all the parts collaboratively falling into your ears all at one time ? I respect his take on absolutely everything he addresses, but this one kinda sets me back upon my heels. I get it, I get it, I get it, both sides of the equation but somehow when this song of all songs (and like all songs) is heard for there complete singular "PRESENTS" , there is no denying the grand yous Top of the pile accolades Stairway to Heaven sumins from pretty much all who hear it. As an artist its sometimes hard to hear totality rather than just your contributing parts. Absolutely no disrespect intended. Probably the biggest Led Head and Plant fan on Earth / Ron.

Only in recent years have I come to appreciate Robert's nuances. Because of how overplayed a cluster of Zeppelin tracks have been since they were together, I have avoided listening to most of their music.

Zeppelin was GOAT period. I will say though that Kashmir sounds much more exciting fuller and richer on the radio than on record. For me it tends to drag a bit without the processing and compression you get on radio.

Led Zeppelin took “some liberties, I must say,” Page admitted. “As far as my end of it goes, I always tried to bring something fresh to anything that I used,” he claimed. He put the blame on Plant: “Robert was supposed to change the lyrics, and he didn’t always do that, which is what brought on most of the grief.” Decide for yourself who’s to blame: here are 10 cases when the band, at least initially, didn’t give other songwriters their due.

"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You"[edit] Main article: Babe I'm Gonna Leave You § Led Zeppelin version The band covered Joan Baez's version of the song written by Anne Bredon; both guitarist Jimmy Page and singer Robert Plant were fans of Baez. Baez's album Joan Baez in Concert, where Baez's version of the song appeared, had originally indicated no writing credit, and Led Zeppelin credited the song as "Trad. arr. Page". In the 1980s, Bredon was made aware of Led Zeppelin's version of the song, and since 1990 the Led Zeppelin version has been credited to Anne Bredon/Jimmy Page & Robert Plant. Bredon received a substantial back-payment of royalties.[1] Music critic Andy Hermann researched and rejected the common accusation that Page copied the guitar riff from either Chicago or George Harrison.[2] The basis of the intro riff may have also been inspired by “Hampstead Incident” by Donovan, which was featured on an album Page and John Paul Jones were both involved with on certain tracks.

This song was correctly credited to Willie Dixon, but a similar controversy exists over whether Page got the idea from friend and former bandmate Jeff Beck: [Beck] had the same sort of taste in music as I did. That's why you'll find on the early LPs we both did a song like "You Shook Me." It was the type of thing we'd both played in bands. Someone told me he'd already recorded it after we'd already put it down on the first Zeppelin album. I thought, "Oh dear, it's going to be identical", but it was nothing like it, fortunately. I just had no idea he'd done it. It was on Truth but I first heard it when I was in Miami after we'd recorded our version. It's a classic example of coming from the same area musically, of having a similar taste.[3] Major differences between both versions include the prominence afforded Nicky Hopkins's keyboard playing in the Mickie Most mix, and that Rod Stewart sings only two verses in the Jeff Beck recording.[4] shook me

"Dazed and Confused"[edit] Main article: Dazed and Confused (Jake Holmes song) § Led Zeppelin Page was performing his version of this song with the Yardbirds, before forming Led Zeppelin. In 1967, while touring with the Yardbirds, Page saw Jake Holmes perform the song in New York. On the first Led Zeppelin album, the band's version was credited solely to Jimmy Page.[5] A 2010 lawsuit appears to have been settled out of court, the case being dismissed and Holmes being added to the songwriting credit.[6]

"Black Mountain Side"[edit] Main article: Black Mountain Side Al Stewart learned Bert Jansch's version of the traditional song "Down by Blackwaterside". However, he mistook Jansch's 'drop-D' tuning for DADGAD. At the time, Stewart was recording his own debut record and had engaged Jimmy Page as a session musician. According to Stewart's account, it was he (Stewart) who taught Page 'Blackwaterside' (the DADGAD version) during a tea-break.[7] In spite of this difference, Jansch's record company sought legal advice following the release of Led Zeppelin.[8] Early in 1965, Anne Briggs and Jansch were performing regularly together in folk clubs[9] and spent most of the daytime at a friend's flat, collaborating on new songs and the development of complex guitar accompaniments for traditional songs.[10] Ultimately, no legal action was taken against Led Zeppelin, because it could not be proven that the recording in itself constituted Jansch's own copyright, as the basic melody was traditional. Nevertheless, Jansch said that Page "ripped me off, didn't he? Or let's just say he learned from me."[8]

My favorites from Led Zeppelin would have to include The Rain Song, Thank You, Since I Been Loving You, Over the Hills and Far Away, and No Quarter. It's hard to pick and choose, though. There're just so many great ones, you'd feel like you were slighting a song by not naming it and end up naming a hundred. ❤🪶🧒🎄
