They did not perform anything together. then Robert plant walk to the back of the stage and Jimmy started playing stairway to heaven. The singer walked off the stage the crowd is the one who sang the song. with Robert plant standing at the back of the stage just watching.

Not true. He interviewed REM on their very first television appearance and for a band that had absolutely nothing but a few reviews of a debut album at that point, he seemed genuinely interested in what they were all about and it became one of their most iconic public performances.
