I’m Irish and slurs like the one Robert used are thrown around quite a lot here, it was probably used unintentionally because he grew up around it. He didn’t seem like he was making fun of transgender people but rather was saying that people should embrace androgyny
@lilyrobson91035 жыл бұрын
Yess that's what I was thinking, he's always inclusive of everybody and the way he said it, especially coming from a place where that slur is used often I don't see as being used offensively
@woylies5 жыл бұрын
to add to your comment, this video was filmed over 5 years ago. i’m not saying that it’s ever okay for a cisgender person to say it - but the history/impact of that slur was not as well-known, even 5 years ago, than it is today
@spacecowboyeddie68034 жыл бұрын
In part 1 I agree with Paloma’s response to Robert asking her if she’s a ‘girly girl’ or a ‘tomboy’, and how there’s more to women than just those two rigid categories...but in the same vain I think her response to the things he was wearing was a bit close-minded. Men also shouldn’t be have to put into boxes either, especially when it comes to aesthetic/fashion/ gender expression.

"Abolish gender sterotypes...wait not YOU, that's weird and offensive to me." What an amazing lack of awareness. A newer comment thread links to a newstory that indicates she has changed her opinion, though.

The box is what’s attractive on that body. That’s the box. People over complicate it. You can obviously choose to dress in a way that looks awful on your figure and personality but you shouldn’t be upset when people don’t like it.

as a trans nonbinary person, i was really scared to watch this after reading the comments because i love him and didnt want this to ruin him for me, but after i did i truly can feel that there was zero malice in what he said against my community, more appreciation actually. just an ignorance in word choice from someone who probably didnt know that that is an offensive term to use. he seems to genuinely appreciate the idea of more fluidity in regards to gender and gender presentation and is recommending that everyone tries to expand their horizons and be more open about what consists of male and female presentation, just fumbled on the words used. but this was 8 years ago and a lot of people were way less educated on what terms are inappropriate unfortunately. i mean this is the same dude who basically outright says that he sees one of his characters as nonbinary and thinks thats a wonderful thing about said character. he was wrong to use that word and i dont know him irl ofc but in context of the actual video, from what i can see, i can chock this up as innocent enough. i think its more important to know how someone actually feels about certain topics instead of getting hung up on specific words used in ignorance.

So funny how i got so scared bcs of people bringing this up and now that I've watched it i notice that is clear that it was said with no malice whatsoever. It wasn't really the t-slur that we know of nowadays, he used it to refer to crossdressing as it was commonly used for that. Dunno if people didn't notice this but the video is from 2013 and during that time people weren't really that aware of transgender people yet. He definitely didn't meant it with malice and he was actually very respectful. I have no idea how some of you genuinely watched this and couldn't understand that this is not in said in a transphobic way at all and he never said it again either. Anyways, hope people get better at interpreting things and understanding difference in time/cultural slangs and language and how information 10-13 years ago was different from nowadays (plus, robert aways being very liberal and has spoken in favor of the lgbtq+ community, would be weird for him to be transphobic considering his believes)

@@user-sz2ez8tk1y To people picking up on the use of the word "tranny": 5 years ago in the UK hardly anyone knew the term "trans people" or "trans gender " and it was still a common casual reference (offensive now for sure) to say "tranny" (particularly to mean men wearing women's clothing, which was the context it was used in in the video instead of it being about trans people). I can imagine this past Robert was completely clueless to trans people terminology and was still coming away from the old words many of us were guilty of using or bashing around the playground. He's only human and we all had to be educated about the difference between drag and trans people (a lot of people grouped drag and trans gender together which showed our ignorance back then) and the concept of gender and gender fluidity, and the words that were unacceptable and the correct terms. Only young people have grown up with that education available to them immediately (the person on the comment above this one, JC, explained it pretty well i think, here is what they said.)

He said "tranny up" but then talked about how he thinks we should embrace the other sides and you got caught up in the slur? He's been wearing things that are not stereotypically manly for years now and it's not a stunt, he's genuinely interested. He's taked about lgbtq+ rights and his views on it thousands of times and even explained how his support to them has people misinterpret his own sexuality. Don't try the start shit about the only straight cis man I know who respects, supports and embraces the lgbtq community this much.

thing is, he really isn’t ‘like this’. not in the way i think you’re conveying. i’m gay and nonbinary but, prior to educating myself (and being educated, let’s be real) and coming to terms with my own internalized homophobia/transphobia, i’d used slurs i would never utter today, because i know the history and power those slurs hold and that it’s not my place to use them or reclaim them. but i didn’t know that when i used those slurs as conversational ‘confetti’, for lack of a better word. that’s on me, but i try to subscribe to the belief that ignorance is only unforgivable when it’s willful. i regret using those slurs, but don’t condemn who i am today for having said them years ago. and i don’t think i was an irredeemable person then, either. just ignorant and a product of my socialization and environment. i don’t condemn robert for the things he said here, especially given how long ago this interview was. knowing the way he is and how open he is to new experiences and having novel conversations/learning opportunities, i doubt he was using the expression out of malice or genuine hatred. i don’t condone what he said, but i don’t condemn him, either. and from everything he’s done/said recently (to my knowledge), it’s pretty apparent that he’s learned a bit more than what he knew at the time of this interview. and that’s okay. i still like the guy very, very much. and i think the work he’s doing as klaus right now and the comfort seeing a character like that brought to life by him snuffs out the (not insignificant) amount discomfort i felt while watching. i’m very willing to believe that he’s grown quite a bit since this interview was held, and until i see any reputable information to the contrary, i’m going to keep my good faith in him. (don’t let this white boy prove me wrong don’t let this white boy prove me wrong don’t let this white bo-)
@milesschaeffler8755 жыл бұрын
I understand, it shocked me a bit too, but it clearly was not out of hate towards trans people. He has shown his support for lgbt people for years, I know he didnt do it to be rude. He was young, grew up different, but hes grown. Dont take it personally, it was before trans people were getting recognition in the media.
@SixtySecondYoga5 жыл бұрын
june jeon If he’s genuinely the only cis man you know that is supportive, you are hanging around the wrong cis men. There is no excuse for using transphobic slurs, wearing feminine clothes is not an excuse, to use it, neither is being supportive, neither is being liked or being famous. And if you’re not trans then you shouldn’t be using the word either. Calling out transphobic language is not “starting shit”, just because the person who used the language is a famous person you like.
