The Pro Edge was the best investment I ever made for my wood turning. Some comments on overheating during grinding would also be useful.

Hi @bobh5616...Thank you for your comments...Abrasive belts cut highly efficiently so when sharpening so as little amount of material is removed with limited friction and heat...When grinding, reshaping or repairing, where more material needs to be removed using a coarser belt then heat is generated, but a lot of the heat is transferred down the shaft of the tool and doesn't remain at the point of contact like it does on a grinding wheel, which causes overheating and potential damage to the steel structure...If you find there is any heat build up always allow it to cool naturally and never dip it in water...I hope this is helpful to you

Great and clear video. Thanks. Would love a follow up video on how to adjust tracking on the belt and other maintenance. Thanks

I have been using one of these Pro Edge machines for nearly a year. If like me, time in your workshop is limited and you don't want to spend most of it sharpening your tools, all I can say is *Get One*. This is one of the best investments I have made.

Thinking about the jig angle
@dawkinsm
@dawkinsm Жыл бұрын
Hi. I’ve just got one of these and my belts all run off to the right by about 5mm. I’ve tried adjusting the tracking but can’t get it any better than the 5mm. I seem to have gone round in circles many times with no improvement. Is there a video that details how the tracking works and how I could adjust it? Other than this small issue the tool is amazing.

Is that fignernail profile jig new? I do not see it on the website. It looks like it is a better design than the one i got with my pro edge.

Up to what size can the profiling jig accomedate?
@robertsorbyengland
@robertsorbyengland Жыл бұрын
Hi...It will accommodate up to a 3/4" shaft as standard and a 7/8" shaft if the brass clamping bar is removed and the tool is held in place just with the locking screw

Does the flat grind cause any problems for woodturning chisels?
@robertsorbyengland
@robertsorbyengland Жыл бұрын
Hi 123Hurst...This replicates the way all Robert Sorby tools are produced...A flat grind gives a consistent bevel to work on

What,s the angle on the fingernail adjusted too , thinking about the holder tool , is it 120 degrees?
@robertsorbyengland
@robertsorbyengland 3 жыл бұрын
Hi John...Yes, the fingernail profile arm is factory set to 120 degrees

Can you explain how a long grind or swept back grind is done on a bowl gouge? It cannot be done as the tool clamp fouls on the belt body when you try to grind the left wing?
@robertsorbyengland
@robertsorbyengland 3 жыл бұрын
The profile produced in the video by using the fingernail profile arm and the standard location boss replicates the Robert Sorby factory fingernail grind...If a longer wing profile is required, then the Long Grind Jig would allow you to do this

@@robertsorbyengland It does not work, myself and others have tried. The newer tool clamp hits the body of the belt sander. Check this out - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKeaYoBnf85loas

@@Bigtel1970 Hi, The original Robert Sorby video shows the extra long grind being created on a 3/8" gouge, I think that is why there is a discrepancy in what you are seeing and what you are experiencing...We always appreciate feedback and comments by customers that are using our tools and equipment on a daily basis....Thank you for going the extra distance and creating the very informative and useful video

@@robertsorbyengland hi there. So is there a solution here? Can you use the long grind boss with any sized gouge?
@mikel4510
@mikel4510 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheTranq The answer is to buy a lathe chisel sharpening system that uses a wheel grinder. I own a Sorbey Pro Edge, and as pointed out in the linked video by TC, the chisel clamp limits the grind to 15 degrees and about a quarter inch length on the tool. Yes, you can use the long grind boss with any size bowl gouge, but, again, you will be limited to 15 degrees and about a quarter inch length on the sides. A third option is to learn how to grind your chisels free hand so you can do it on any machine - belt or wheel. Shame on RS for refusing to come out and just say, "Well, our machine has some limitations, as you pointed out. We apologize for not considering this issue when we designed our half-assed machine." LOT of trust lost with there silence.

Hi Midwest Prepper...Thank you for your enquiry...There are several very good Robert Sorby stockists in the USA that are able to offer you the ProEdge. Please go to the Robert Sorby website for a list of stockists in the USA. These stockists would also be able to offer you a good selection of options on lathes as well

The 40/40 grind came into prominence after the ProEdge was developed, but the tool platform and the protrusion of the gouge in the fingernail profile arm can be set to suit other styles of grind

I wouldn't buy an oval skew if I had my way back again. Much easier to sharpen a square skew.
