Ok, if anyone is actually watching a Hollywood movie for history lessons instead of, you know, actual historical documents and well researched documentaries then that's just really sad. Braveheart is a amazing and skillfully crafted movie and I will die on that hill. The wonderfully talented acting, cinematography, script, battle scenes and the hauntingly beautiful score by James Horner brought me to tears every time I saw it. Do I know it's not historically accurate? Yep, cause it inspired me to do more research in to the lives of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Yes, we were taught about them in school but I wanted to find out more so I did that and you can too, it's not too hard. Oh and you don't need to take away from what William Wallace achieved to make Robert the Bruce look better, us Scots already know that he was a total fecking legend and so is William Wallace!
@CmdrTomalak
@CmdrTomalak Жыл бұрын
I mean, the movie 'Braveheart' doesn't really indicate the title refers to Wallace. The movie does end with Robert the Bruce taking up where Wallace left off. So you 'could' infer the title might actually be referring to him. I rather enjoyed this one. Thanks as always Weird History guy, for making history so entertaining.
@Chraan
@Chraan 8 ай бұрын
I don't know how the last scene is understood in English, but in the German translation it fades out with claiming that the underfed Scots finally gained their freedom... which implies that they all died. Everyone here who knows the movie but not the history just assumes its a movie with a sad ending because they all died and England won.

As a Scot I really appreciate this video shining some light on our history! And accurately at that. I will confess, I have a love/hate relationship with Braveheart. It's AGGRESSIVELY inaccurate and the accents are... oof, and of course Mel Gibson is problematic. However, it's entertaining as hell, the music and scenery are stunningly beautiful (yes, I know a most of it's Ireland but there are some scenery shots that are Scotland) so... mixed feelings. Glad to have this video to straighten things up a wee bit.

Looking at you, Groundskeeper Willy, Shrek, and Fat Bastard. As a Scot myself with an actual Scottish accent, I would rate Mel's maybe a 6.5, 7 if I'm being generous. I confess, I have a love/hate relationship with this movie, you can't deny that it's damn entertaining and beautifully shot, even if basically the only thing they got right was that William Wallace was indeed a dude that existed.

I think you missed the point. William was never called brave heart in the movie. But he was essentiell for Roberts final decision of fighting against the english crown till the end. Oh yay… it’s the internet, meaning half of the commenters are going to claim a kinship with somebody famous (Robert Bruce in this case). I’ll bet their grandfathers were also at Pearl Harbor, Midway, and D-Day.

There's the historically true version and then there's the Hollywood version.. unfortunately some people watch the Hollywood version on a screen and sadly believe that it's accurate.

There was a sequel to Braveheart called Robert the Bruce that had Angus MacFayden reprise his role. I don't know how historically accurate it was because 1. I don't know anything about Scottish history (unless you count what I just learned in the video). 2. I never finished it because I thought it was terrible. And I think that's the consensus view because this is the only time I've ever heard anyone talk about it... and I'm the one who brought it up.

Both Robert the Bruce and William Wallace were major players in ensuring Scotland maintained its proud and historic identity to this day. However, we should never forget other great names such as Andrew Moray and the Bruce’s greatest lieutenants Sir James Douglas and Sir Thomas Randolph 1st Earl of Moray, without whom Bruce would never have succeeded. Randolph was for me Scotland’s greatest unsung hero, nephew of Bruce, when you research what this man done for Scotland, you will be in awe. Many people get emotional when they pay respect to the great Robert the Bruce at his final resting place and rightly so. However, if you get the chance to do so, walk a few more yards, kneel in front of where Randolph rests, pay your respects and you will be humbled.

There really needs to be a miniseries about Bruce. Too many interesting incidents to cover in a movie. Outlaw King was pretty good, but Chris Pine was too dainty and there were some truly goofy details, such as the absurdity of Edward II being at the battle of Loudoun Hill-and being let go after defeated. Ideally, for Bruce, you'd have someone more along the lines of Sean Connery. Angus McFadyen is a fine actor, but he was too old to play Bruce in 2019. Also, the movie was only a small slice of Bruce's story.

Edward I did not invade and seize control of Scotland. Robert the Bruce's father and other nobles called him to mediate and decide who the next king of Scotland should be as there were no legitimate king of Scotland as the last king died without heir as well as his granddaughter died on the way to Scotland.
