I’v heard people say you die two deaths. One when your body dies and then your soul when your name is uttered for the last time by a living person. If that is the case Robert the Bruce will live forever. This one was nicely done Bruce. 👍

Being an “American”, I love your videos. You are the man Bruce. I’ve learned more about Scotland (and England) in my 56 years of life by watching you than i ever learned in any history lesson. The way you tell the story as well as show these wonderful historic places. It really kind of puts you right there at that time of when all of these events happened.

This presentation is pure poetry,delivered in the voice of the poet. When the voice goes soft, and speaks directly to the future heroic leader, the blood responds. Well done, Bruce!

I got a wee bit emotional watching this. I think there's a lot of people who cant see past the whole Bannockburn/freedom angle but what he did, and what he gave this country was so much more important than that. It might feel to some as though over history in the long run Bruce's achievements actually don't amount to much beyond the millitary victories, since Scotland eventually ended up being unified with England to create the UK anyway. But if it hadn't been for the Bruce, Scotlands culture and very identity would have died out in the 14th century and everything that has and still makes us unique would have been lost to history. Even The United Kingdom itself, however you may feel about that, would not exist today as we know it. Because of Robert the Bruce, Scotland got a further 400 years of national and cultural development. It made an undeniable mark on the world and continues to do so. It's people have retained their national identity, it's flag still fly's proudly, and it retains it's own laws and customs. All of that because of the actions of this one man and his loyal followers. As far as i'm concerned he has earned his place in history a thousand times over, and i wouldn't sell for any amount of money.

@Hoa Tattis haha get a grip of yourself, Wallace done nothing really in comparison to Robert or Andrew., Sterling Bridge wasn't even Wallace's battle plan, It was Andrew De Moray's. Andrew died shortly after battle is only reason Wallace gets all the credit. You have been watching to much Braveheart. Pathetic actualy as Wallace was just as brutal as anybody. Have you ever even read anything we know for a fact about Wallace except Braveheart? Which was a name given to Robert' 😂 I guess not LOL My Surname is Wallace but even that can't make me biased towards Wallace. Braveheart has a lot to answer for since in reality Robert supported Wallace. No doubt Wallace never deserved a traitors death and will always be remembered but in reality he was just as brutal as anybody. Btw I'm a Scot from Ayrshire...
@davidwallace4416
@davidwallace4416 3 жыл бұрын
@Hoa Tattis They where traitors, They tried to get Robert arrested in London which he escaped, They grassed him up to Edward about his intentions to free his Country. To me they where worse, A bunch of grasses 😂 It's James Douglas and even he supported our greatest warrior King Robert The Bruce 👍
@davidwallace4416

@Hoa Tattis His Mother was Gaelic and his father was Norman, This Robert The Bruce was different from all his Ancestors before him. He didn't care about Scots but he gave up all his huge estates in England and lost practily all his brothers and Family to free Scotland so you make no sense??? He was a Scot born in Turnberry Castle about 20mins drive from where I live. Because of Robert The Bruce Scotland was completely Independent for another 400 years so we kept our Culture, Without him all that would have been lost and Scotland today would be a completely different Country. The Comyns and allies MacDougall's ect slaughtered a lot of Scots who where trying to free Scotland with The Bruce. They got what they deserved, I heard nothing grew for years in Comyns Ancestral land and allied Clans Land. They deserved it. Aye maybe he defended Carlisle from the Scots but he had a hell of a lot to lose with all his land in England and he obviously didn't think it was time to try take Scotland back since the Nobles couldn't agree on the colour of shite 👍😂

@Hoa Tattis @Hoa Tattis He didn't have leprosy, his Enemy's made that up. Just so you know Norman's where Vikings. They got Normandy for free to live on to stop them attacking other parts of Modern day France but still that wasn't enough they wanted Modern Day Scotland and England. In Scotland we wiped them out of the British isles and other parts of Scotland. You should read a good history book in this time period, there's much more to it all than I think you realise? A gorgeous tribute. Keep your Arthur, your Sun King, your Henry V, and your Charlemagne. The Bruce filled the role of 'King' above all others. How many that we exalt today as the ideal King could have endured tribulations of fortune like his and never waver.

This reminded me of the first time I came across Robert de Bruce. I loved stories of William Wallace, so much so that I railed against the movie Braveheart. I still do. I became fixated on the story of Wallace when I played Age of Empires 2 for the first time. Then came the fateful day that I was wandering around my middle school library, relishing a little bit of peace and quiet. I found a box of old books that the library was giving away, seeing that they didn't get much love anymore. In it, I found a little green book simply titled "Robert De Bruce". Intrigued by this little old book, published in 1920, I opened it up. I instantly fell in love with the stories of the liberator of Scotland. It was a heroic and tragic tale. The book was quickly adopted by me, and I read the story of the Beggar King again and again, until I loved the little book to death.

We forget in Scotland how old and long our history is just last weekend I was in St Andrews and sat down at the old cathedral to have a drink of juice and a rest. Then I thought no wonder Americans are so amazed with these places people have sat on this spot for a wee rest and a drink for centuries before America was even discovered never mind a country. There's Roman bath house ruins just a 2 minute walk from my house that's going back even further to biblical times we really do forget how ancient our country is. There's definitely something cool about still having alot of it still along side our modern world, glad you enjoy Scotland !

First, I know very little about Scottish history. I only in the last several years found I am of Scottish decent. Then I am able to trace my family back to Sir Symon Locard (Lockhart) who is the knight who held the key to the box that contained the heart of Robert the Bruce going to the Crusades. Even just starting to learn about Scottish heritage, this video made me so emotional. I look forward to learning so much more.

Wonderful, video it is a terrible shame his tomb was destroyed by vandals during the reformation. He saved the Nation of Scotland. My grandma told me the story of The Bruce and the Spider as a young child in the Early 1960s. It has inspired me through a recovery through a severe spinal injury to fight it and through the loss of my loving wife who was the finest woman I have ever met. She wasn't perfect but she was perfect for me and that in the end was what matters. I don't know if the Spider story is true, but it should be. It is inspiring. At isn't that what heroes are for to inspire those that follow. I grew up in the Virginia Highlands originally, though I now live in South Carolina. I really enjoy your videos and I learn a lot from you and your enthusiasm for the History of your Nation really comes through

Robert the Bruce, a great and visionary, enabled the Scots to preserve their history, culture and identity (I love the legend of his idea related to the spider web). Neither Edward, nor many after him who tried otherwise, failed to nullify his legacy. Not even Culloden who was supposed to erase the pride of the Scots forever. I deeply respect the Scots and their pride and honor. Thank you for a great job! Alba gu bràth ! With love from Croatia.

I do not even know how to tell how this hit me. I really can`t put it in words. But I think that words cannot truly explain my feelins right now. So I will just say thank you for this post Bruce Fummey. And thank you Robert Bruce for taking the country of my forefathers and making it a country of it`s own. Scotland, governed by Scots and free forever. Right now it is part of the U.K. and I personally don`t like that, but it is so by choice, not occupation or under the thumb of England. I cannot say that I am Scottish, because I was born in America and this is my home always, and the best country in the world. But My name and my blood is Scottish, and I will never forget that. I am proud of that as well. The heart of a Scot is the heart of a warrior. ceud mile failte.

@Hoa Tattis can't argue with anything you say Hoa! Such was the brutality of that age! And it would have to be a very strong/pitiless individual who could rise to the head of the 'clans'. History is littered with examples of possibly the wrong person gaining the crown, an example being Henry 7th founder of the Tudor line, his claim to the throne was tenuous to say the least and Richard 111, his predecessor, possibly butchered his own nephews (the rightful heirs) on his way to the crown. But in regards to the Bruce, I do take your point! We tend only to remember the winners!

@Hoa Tattis As did so many Scottish nobles Hoa. I'm descended from 'Clan Mackenzie' and reading about their early history, well they were certainly 'up to tricks' at one time or another! At least the two protagonists -Bruce and Comyn- decided the issue in a personal duel at the end. There certainly was some 'bad blood' between them. They were probably as bad as each other, truth be told.

I'm an American with absolutely no Scottish DNA in my ancestry. Still, part of me wishes there was. I'm enjoying learning Scottish history told through your stories.

Well, for your channel I'm a buyer. Subscribed! Always nice to see a man who knows how to tell a story. Is there anything more important, more influential in the world than a good and well-told story? Not in my book. Keep up the good work!!

Absolute BUYER!!! I'm really enjoying all of your videos. Yes, another American who loves Scotland. However, I've taken the opportunity to visit and have walked many of the grounds you've featured. Like many Americans, I've deep roots in Scotland. Mine extend from both paternal & maternal sides. Pre-eminently my mothers Father was Bruce Sandlin (Sandilands of Calder, prior to ancestral immigration) tying back to King Robert through Princess Jean Stewart dau. of King Robert II. My surname ancestors spent 5-6 generations in primarily Galloway, Saxons who left what is modern day Turon, Poland before moving on to America in the late 17th century. Your video regarding the Forgotten Kings struck a strong chord as well. My Fathers maternal Grandmother was a Duff and I've traced the lineage back to the Duffs of Banffshire (who also later married into the Norman Kings bloodline). I'd like to believe there are deeper ties to those early Gaelic Kings but documentation is sketchy at best. Regardless, Scots blood runs in my veins and to echo your sentiments from the "Should Black People Talk..." the sound of the pipes, the utter beauty of the highlands, undying support for Scotland Natl. Rugby (I've the old school collared long sleeve w/ the St. Andrews cross jersey!), the solemnity of the Moors of Culloden, are all triggers to me! The History of Scotland is MY history too and I'm proud to share it with one who obviously holds it in such high regard! Thank You for such wonderful presentations.

Ah Bruce, your humour was nearly wrangles fae ye there. As usual I loved your videos and I always learn more and more. You re-balance my ignorance and an awakening occurs of my Scots past. You have given me wee points on the map to visit on my motorbike, not too far from Ayrshire that I may visit. It gets me away from the wife nagging about the bairns safety at Transmit. Thanks again(genuinely). I've bought you a wee coffee as a thanks. It is now an ambition to meet you in person and buy you a coffee......and maybe a scone as well.....from a tight arsed Scot, that's sure to be a compliment.

As a rookie to Scottish history I truly respect your romance for the country and it’s people. I hope King Robert found the easy way out for his regrets, which is Christ and his payment for our sins. He truly led a historic life and got it right in the end.

Ask yourself how old that would make his gradnad. In fact his grandad was Bruce the Competitor. His 4X great grandad came from Normandy with David I under the reign of Henry I in England. I filmed the place they came from in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaDciH6Caa2rmZI

So interesting. I hope to visit in the not too distant future. I am a descendant of Robert's son David. It took a while to research but it's authentic and I feel proud to know the story of his life.

I've read a lot of English / Scottish / British history and I watched parts of Braveheart. Things were very complicated back in those days but I've always been a seller of Robert Bruce. Thank you for giving me something to think about and go read about. I'll get back to you.
