I blame his mom. He was only 11 years old. His mother neglected him. Abused him. Lied and said that his father was the one who was abusing him when he wasn't even around he was locked up all his life. Burning him with cigarettes & prostitution. Got arrested multiple times. He was sent to his grandmothers home which wasn't any different. Then got sent to a children's shelter then ran away and never came back. Dropped out of school. Went to the streets. Poor kid was obviously hurt. Angry. I believe if his mother wouldn't of been that way with him and stayed home and take care of him showed him love and care he wouldn't of been in the streets. Gets me so angry some people shouldn't even be fucking parents meanwhile you have people who can't even have kids and they are willing to give their child the world.

Wish i could agree but my baby brother is a BGD and we had both parents in the. My dad is a vet and was very strict. As a matter of fact he had been in a gang since he was 12 and non of us knew even though after a while we seen people ten times older then him bow down. Hes an artist and does tattoos. But it took him going to prison for us to even be aware. I thought gangs we're a joke until all if the madness came to light and these people n children rather gamble their lives, the lives of their family and going to jail rather then just making it with out committing crimes

You know if we are going to point the finger... Is it safe to say the government failed black folks all together. Chicago and many other cites in the mid west are destitute and violent. But this is what the system wants. Nobody black ever asked for this way of life. But what is a black family to do when they are not given the same opportunities as other ethnic groups in this country, especially chicago. Maybe the white folks who run chicago are the pieces of shit. Til this day chicago is still very segregated. All im saying is the brain cant teach what it dont know. Maybe instead of pointing the finger maybe more blacks from more wealthy areas of this country and the world should take the time and look out for places like chicago or flint Michigan.... Its been 5 years and flint water is still dirty.... My point is maybe the black folks in south side chicago are not the problem maybe the system is....

Early life Robert Sandifer was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 12, 1983. Sandifer's mother, Lorina Sandifer, had over 30 arrests while prostituting,[7] many of which were drug-related. Sandifer's father, Robert Akins, was absent throughout Sandifer's life due to incarceration for a felony gun charge. Sandifer was physically abused from the time he was an infant.[6] Before he was three years old, Sandifer was already known to the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Physical examinations showed that Sandifer was alleged to have had cigarette burns on his arms and neck as well as linear bruising consistent with physical beatings. Lorina initially blamed the abuse on Sandifer's father, although she later recanted.[8] In 1986, Sandifer and his siblings were removed from his mother's home by DCFS and were sent to live with their grandmother in the Roseland neighborhood of Chicago.[8] His grandmother's residence contained as many as 19 children on some occasions. By most accounts, his grandmother's home was not much better than Sandifer's previous home. Sandifer, by the age of eight, quit attending school and began to roam the streets stealing cars and breaking into houses. At the age of ten, Sandifer was arrested on charges of armed robbery. A psychological examiner at the time reported that "Robert is a child growing up without any encouragement and support," and that he "has a sense of failure that has infiltrated almost every aspect of his inner self."[8] In 1993, Sandifer and his siblings were removed from his grandmother's home and were sent to the Lawrence Hall DCFS shelter on Chicago's North Side, from which Sandifer ran away and never returned. From 1993 until his death, Sandifer's whereabouts and living arrangements remain unclear, although he continued to be arrested by the authorities But yet the grandmother wants to stand outside and scream like a banshee ..she didnt give a fuck bout that boy..the system didnt fail this boy his family and those around him failed him did

I've been reading/listening to Yummy's same sad story since I was in high school in '95. Even today it's still powerful, chilling and distrubing. His family is completely oblivious to the fact that he was just an 11 y.o. The whole version of this video leaves me in awe. His mom said he was just an average kid who use to drive her around in stolen cars. The fam don't even consider his 23 felony arrest. This problem is bigger than the Chi'. The world can't handle it.

I wish people could have seen it from his eyes. He only wanted love and support from a REAL FAMILY. Didn't anyone recall the reports of him telling his grandma on the phone that he is scared, tired of running from the police and sorry for what he did? He was a kid that slipped through the cracks and needed to be guided and loved by someone. Boy, I tell you. If I loved back then, in the area and knew about what he did before hand, I would have stopped him and took him in. may him and Shavon RIP.

It's sad that all kids involved are gone. Yummy did not know any better. How he grew up was all he knew. He was born into everything he was. He did not gets chance to grow up and see that there is life outside of the ghetto. He had no positive people in his life and no one to look up to. It's sad to see this and it breaks my heart. But hey, God knows what he's doing, even in tragedies. We just need to teach our youth and be better parents in some households in the black community...this story here just makes me hug my son and to give him love everyday that way he would not lack any. Motherly and Fatherly love is what yummy missed his whole life.

Sista you are ABSOLUTELY right. This is the enivornment the poor child was brought up in AND IT WAS ALL HE EVER NEW. I can SO relate to this. I lived the 1st 7 years of my life on 44th & Princeton. By the time I was in 2nd grade I had begun skipping school, was being recruited by the Black Stone Rangers and was well on my way down that dark path. Unfortunately my maternal grandmother took sick with cancer. But FORTUNATELY my paternal grandmother stepped up and took me to a small town in Michigan (Bangor) where it made all the difference in the world. Yes it was slow and country, and I was initially one of only a few blacks in the neighborhood but it was a healthy and safe upbringing. Something this child never head the chance to experience.

It's like Denzel Washington put it. Everyone blames the system for all the bad that happens, and obviously things do need to be fixed in the system, but by the time the system is involved it's often too late. This kid ended up the way he did because of his home life, his involvement with friends and people doing bad things. Parents, take care of your kids. It starts in the home.

I understand that a lot of the things he was doing were not right. And him being 11 years didn't excuse him from his actions. However, you have to look at his circumstances. He had no one to look up to. He came from a broken home. His father was incarcerated and his mom had a history of drug-related arrests. It's wasn't completely his fault. What kind of children are you going to produce from such??? He practically had to raise himself. That kid was so young. I just wish he could've gotten help before it was too late. He wasn't even able to live long enough to realize that there was more to life than just gang-banging, drugs, and violence. And RIP to Shavon Dean, but she didn't deserve to die the way she did either.

Look at the difference between Shavon’s family and Yummy’s family. People don’t accidentally turn out the way they do. And I’m not making judgements on Yummy. He didn’t choose to be brought into an abusive household with prostitutes in a neighborhood filled with a gangs.

I remember this case and I have never forgotten it. I viewed the website regarding this tragic story and it brings back such sad memories. This child and the young girl who he was accused of killing were victims of their environment. I always wondered whatever happened to the individuals that murdered this 11 year old child. However, the killings continue of children by other children in Chicago TODAY and nothing is being done to about it.

I love the fact that, that grown man made sure to tell all those children, who attended the funeral. To take a long hard look and make a choice to not go down that path. Those moments are the hardest to remember, that you must learn from others mistakes. Because no one person can survive, only learning from their own mistakes. You must learn from others!

You can't blame the system for what happened we as black people need to start taking responsibility for are kids it starts from home with both parents rising these boys because a mother can only do so much but that boy needs he father to show him how to be a man not the street

I totally agree but let’s be real a lot of single mothers in the hood act like they don’t need/want a good man around to help raise the kids until the kids get to out of control and sh*t gets real. Then it’s “where all the good black men at?” But too many women turn down the good dudes for the hood dudes and tragedies like this are the results unfortunately.

It truly broke me to see a child deceased in a casket like that from the beginning he didn’t stand a chance with a mother who was a prostitue and into drugs. She had too many kids grandma had to many kids and grandkids no one gave him attention and love and showed him right from wrong. It didn’t have to happen that way regardless of the fact he was a menace to society he was still a child whose product of environment failed him his whole family failed him not just the system.

There are so many red flags here, the sister said money kept appearing in the mail box but claiming it came from wholesome people. & she seemed off, like she was high or something.. The man on the porch at 5:20 to 5:39 knew something... that's why he kept trying to get that girl quiet. The little boys that said yummy was bad also knew something too. They seemed to have mutual friends of gang affiliation which would explain why they spoke highly of the brothers who murdered him. Everything here is just eery.. & the family of yummy clearly neglected him.. how else was he able to drop out of school before the age of 10 & get pulled in by a gang? The worst part of all this is the man who killed him is out of prison & the ones who ordered the hit are still alive not caring.

You try to look and you can't find any gang related story which is sadder than this one. here in 2017 about to be 2018 you look back and see this and its just amazing. The people interviewed in this video speak so candidly emotionless its almost as if they are shell-shocked but the saddest thing is that they are probably used to life in a war zone like that. People wanna talk about Compton on the west coast, and Brownsville on the east coast as the worst neighborhoods, but nothing is ever comparable to Chicago and what they had at the time with Cabrini and Robert Taylor etc. Even New York and LA had publicity and had some of the biggest rappers and artists come out from the hood there which in a certain way goes to show that the environment was ripe with inspiration inducing education. Chicago had zero. It was underreported and unreported and the whole city as a whole failed people like Robert Sandifer.

Wonder what happened to the 3 boys in the video at the end? I hope they’re doing well. Stop the violence, pray and have Jesus as your friend. He’ll never turn his back on you, he’ll be your best friend that will guide you and let you know if something doesn’t feel right. Denzel Washington interview brought me here, he’s a very good man and has Christ in his life, he speaks of it in other interviews. If you’re a young boy and a gang member is trying to get you to do something you know isn’t right it’s God that has your back. Just politely say No thank you and walk away and avoid them at all cost. Get in your home early and hang out with your family keep busy, read and pray, God will take care of the rest. And your education will be your salvation along with your faith in God. And if your in the environment in your own home that is violent, go to a teacher or to a minister in a church or even to a police officer let them know that you need to be removed for your own safety, remove yourself and be with positive God fairing ppl. Peace be with you🙏🏼
