She may not have been the greatest, but she was perfect in every way.

Incredibly accurate and even. No scooping and no part if the voice is ugly or coarse. She had an exceptionally long career for a coloratura.

omg.. what an incredible soprano!! so horribly underrated and unappreciated by most, but, not by me, she and Beverly Sills were the very best American sopranos of the 20th century, bar None!

While I agree that Roberta Peters is one of the best American opera singers of the 20th Century, it is hyperbole to say she was underrated and underappreciated. She was a star at the Met and was highly admired across Europe. She was chosen to record the Queen of the Night in Karl Bohm's recording of the Magic Flute. Also it is unfair to compare singers across fachs. Other amazing American Sopranos of the 20th Century include Eleanor Steber and Rosa Ponselle, both of whom had almost no roles in common with Roberta Peters (except maybe Violetta). But their vocal types and approach to the role defy comparison.

@@drnivek Perhaps he means "today" she is not much talked about, of course she wasn't really the perfect voice type for Traviata and rarely sang the role at all , she sang the big aria in the film "Tonight we sing" but her voice was better for roles like the doll in Hoffmann , Page in Ballo, the role and recording you mentioned, even in Lucia which she sang not only live but in a commercial recording complete for RCA in the late 1950's with Jan Peerce still that was not a famous role for her as some others as you mentioned as "Magic Flute" and also her great Gilda in Rigoletto and the RCA recording of it she made complete with Bjoerling and Merrill in 1956.Her Gilda I did see live and it was excellent as she sang it often in the opera house. That was an opera she sang in Met. Brdcsts, with Tucker and Warren in 1956 and with Tucker again in 1964 and then Merrill as Rigoletto and I heard it at the time. In 1968 she did sing a concert performance I attended in LA Calif. with her mentor and friend Jan Peerce and she sang many arias and duets with him, I also saw her in concert with others and alone, in 1993 she opened the Chicago Grant Park season with a great recital in her early 60's sounding much younger and singing even arias out of her own Rep., like "Casta Diva" no she as you said was not under rated back then but she also did excel in some different roles then Sutherland and the American Sills did, (Peters rarely until later in her career sang Traviata ) the two super stars close to Peters in age, sang some different roles, so as you said "Unfair to compare singers across Fachs"

I love her recording of “The Student Prince” (especially ‘Come Boys’) and only wish she had recorded “The Merry Widow” and lots more operettas and musicals.She really delivered the goods and I could listen to her all day.She should have been in movies too.

I saw her in Fort Lauderdale in 'Merry Widow' late in her career, she brought her own costumes. She did make a movie in '53 or so, 'Tonight We Sing' based on life of Sol Yurok.

No one soprano was the greatest, nor Callas or Sutherland. There have been great sopranos, great tenors, great mezzos and so forth, but never the greatest one. Her voice sounds like a bell and a songbird, as Lily Pons and Rita Streich voices that were very similar. Unfortunatelly, she was underrated. In Lucia di Lammermoor (Mad scene), she had the longest high notes. Try to hear her full Lucia di Lammermoor recording with Jan Peerce. Greetings,

Beautiful lady---beautiful high notes. Why isn't she more respected as a great coloratura soprano ? She seems to have been overshadowed by so many others . I saw her in an operetta years ago and enjoyed her singing. I respect her artistry.

@@kerryincolumbus She wasn't really underrated, she chose to preserve her voice in light roles and didn't expand her repertoire into the Rossini-Bellini revival where Callas ruined hers. Sutherland then took it from there and was more versatile but Roberta just kept singing.
@kerryincolumbus4 жыл бұрын
@@rogerpropes7129 I still maintain she's underrated... you don't see her pic on the cover of Time magazine like Beverly Sills or still somehow admired by millions of people like that bow-legged cow Sutherland.

@@kerryincolumbus It's not fair to criticize Joan for her appearance. She deserves the palm as the greatest overall soprano for her talent, voice and versatility, but she is far from my favorite--Peters is my gold standard.
