The very first opera I ever saw on stage was on a high school field trip 60 some years ago. It was "The Barber of Seville." I don't remember the Figaro or Almaviva, but Salvatore Baccaloni as Bartolo, Jerome Hines as Basilio, and especially Roberta Peters as Rosina I will never forget. She was a delight!

What was there not to love about Becky Peters??!! She was at the Met forever and I have fond memories of her Rosina, Queen of the Night, Violetta, and Lucia (two with Corelli) among other roles. She was a delight and a real New Yorker. Rest in peace gracious lady!

Truly impressive. Ms. Peters seemed to never get the credit she fully deserved I'm guessing because she was so diligent in presenting the medium of opera to American television audiences throughout the 5o's and 60's. But giving her TV appearances a 2nd look has made me appreciate her style in how she presented opera in the new medium of television to those who mostly had no familiarity with it. To say nothing of the degree of difficulty of her interpretations going through the proverbial roof.
