Roe Deer: Following Their Secret Lives through the Seasons 🦌

TRACKS & SIGNS
It was winter and there was frost and snow on the ground when I noticed roe deer tracks in Ash Wood. I also spotted tufts of their fur that had caught on branches. You can tell roe deer from other species by the way the fur seems to snap, rather than pull apart. (Find out more here: • Tracks & Signs of Roe ... )
A ROE DEER DIET
Roe deer browse on a wide variety of food. They will nibble grasses, leaves, tree shoots and even bark, but this plant-based diet can sometimes lack the minerals they need, especially the calcium, sodium and phosphates to help their antlers grow strong.
SUPPLEMENTED WITH SALT LICK
So to support the visiting deer at Ash Wood, I made a salt solution and placed it an upturned bottle. I fixed the bottle to a stick to allow rainwater to drip through the solution and down the stick. It was an instant hit with the roe deer. Watch as a buck even marks the stick as its own territory!
WATER
The ponds I dug at Ash Wood also helped to support this species, since here on the Yorkshire Wolds there are few natural water sources. Watch as these elegant animals slip quietly into the wood at night to drink from the pond.
MOULT
As the weather warmed up, the visiting roe deer shed their grey/brown winter coats and grew a beautiful new red coat for the winter.
ROE DEER FAMILY
Roe deer tend to be solitary in summer and are more likely to form loose groups in winter, however they can group together at any time of year. My cameras captured three together, as well as a very special moment when a doe and her fawn visited.
DEER ALL YEAR ROUND
I can now watch deer via hidden cameras at Ash Wood all year round, and the habit I have developed also supports them.

I watched a golden eagle nest this past season. Roe dear fawns where a common meal in the nest. Hard to watch but part of nature. It takes a skilled mother to keep her fawn safe until it is grown, it seems.

Such a simple, low-tech solution... love it! Do you use ordinary sea salt or table salt, or some kind of special salt meant for ungulates?

Ungulates aren't picky when it comes to salt. For my horses for example I do give them salty treat of sea salt, they do come up in winter on roads to luck salt from the roads and they love salt blocks with more enrichments. Ungulates will click every salt since they are high in calcium, sodium and phosporus for their bodies to work good and for big antlers

The salt has nutrients which the deer need. Without salt licks, herbivores do things like eat soil, lick cave walls and even eat carrion. Here in Finland the reindeer sometimes stomp lemmings dead and eat them.

As usual, gorgeous footage. i have some questions though. At 0.47 the rumps of the deer are very clearly visible and I'm wondering is there a reason for this? Also what's the story with salt licks? Why are they so irresistible to deer and what is their function?

Deer can change the Appearance of there white rumps fanning there fur out which they use particularly when frightened or running from danger but as you can see they are fairly relaxed in this footage, maybe the one walking had smelled me and a bit of salt is good for them as there diet doesn’t help much sodium in it

I don't know if these particular deer near Robert's lands are hunted, but roe deer in general are an important game animal across Europe and Asia.

Roe deers are famoussly hunted but their numbers are always growing, reason are their antlers wich is highly appreciated among the hunters, mostly in balkans, they are the most hunted in the europe even tough they are least concider, along with the wild boar People most say these are the most beautiful deer species in the world, and their fawns are the cutest, no eonder there is a saying you have a roedeer eyes, as we say that in the balkans
