My dad used to take us to Shea Stadium in the late 60's when the Pirates were in town, so we could see Roberto Clemente. I remember when he passed away. We were Mets fans, but we were seriously crushed when he died. It was hard to watch the Pirates without him. He was their heart and soul. In that regard, maybe he was the greatest of all time?

I went to a game at Shea with my dad and brothers. We were seated about 10 rows back along the 1st base line. Roberto and Manny Sanguillen just walked over, right in front of the 1st base stands, and started warming up. After about 3 throws, some fans had gathered near Clemente and were asking for his autograph. He stopped, went over and signed about a dozen. I was brokenhearted when he was killed. A lot of people were, sports fans and non-fans alike.

Yep. Roberto dying over the Christmas Holiday season was especially hard to take. I watched him at Shea. And that 1971 World Series... was his!

I was born in 1962 & I was 10 years old in 1972, living in a suburb of Pittsburgh. I can remember walking into the kitchen on New Year's Day where my parents were listening to the radio. My mother was in tears, I can't recall if my father was similarly affected, & when I asked what was wrong, my mother replied that Roberto Clemente had been killed. As a 10 year old Pirates fan who idolized that 1971 team, I was crushed.

Roberto's arm was special, and with accuracy. I submit that Carl Furillo aka "The Reading Rifle" was reputed to have the greatest arm of all time, supported by none other than Rocky Colavito, the greatest arm I've ever seen. An underrated arm which many have said was among the best belonged to the great Roger Maris. Great ball players from our era Mark, and beyond compare to those in today's game.

When I was a kid, I attended Pirate games in old Forbes Field, as my Mom's family liven in Pittsburgh. I remember Forbes Field being 409' to the iron gate and just huge. No one had an arm like Roberto. One year, the pirates came to Youngstown, Ohio to play an exhibition game. Somehow I was chosen to be batboy for a day. I got to meet all the Pirate players including Roberto. All of those guys treated me like I was family. Bob Skinner gave me a bottle of Coca Cola on the team bus and passed an autograph sheet for me. I'm now 74, but that memory is still alive. Oh, they did not charge me for an autograph.

on that first throw he does everything textbook. on the first base line there's lumpy grass on both sides of the dirt, Clemente sets the ball down gently so he doesnt handcuff sanguillen. its a masterclass on power and accuracy, thats 16 seasons of experience

Take into account that many of those throws are without a step and without much of a look. Many of his throws will never be seen, as there were not many televised games at that time. Those who were able to see him play may have seen many more...And players stopped running on him sometime in the 60's. Greatest and most accurate arm ever!

Between innings, the Pirate fielders would toss the ball around to warm up. Clemente always threw the last ball in, a cannon shot from right field, to a Pirate standing on the dugout steps. Landed smack in the middle of that guy's mitt every time. It was a direct message to the other team: don't even think about running on me.

I grew up in NYC but I knew about Roberto Clemente because not only was he a fellow Puerto Rican, he was one tremendous ballplayer with a cannon for an arm. He threw the javelin in his younger days, which gave him the leverage to throw the way he did. My entire amateur athletic life, I've worn 21 as my number. I idolized him. I was just crushed, heartbroken, and inconsolable for several days when he died. He sacrificed his life bringing relief supplies to the earthquake survivors in Nicaragua. His grossly overloaded, underpowered plane crashed a mile off shore. Funny thing is, they never found his body.

@@mrmojorisin8752 He was a true humanitarian and one to be admired and emulated. He did this at a time when he would not receive any recognition, (until much later of course), or acclaim, or do it to pat himself on the back, or put on a show for the press. He did it because he had an enormous heart for the poor, of which he himself came up the same way. On my channel, I have a tribute video to him. It's easy to find. Let me give you one example of how revered he was in Latin America. In the 60s, Managua, Nicaragua was arguably one of the most dangerous cities in the western hemisphere, if not the planet. Crime rates were beyond belief and yet, he had such a well established reputation as both a celebrity ballplayer and compassionate human being that he literally walked the streets of Managua with a sack full of coins to hand out to children of the destitute, and absolutely NO ONE messed with him. NO ONE! Think about that for a moment. The man is walking the streets of this city with more money in that sack then most of these people will make in 5 years or maybe even a lifetime, (no exaggeration or hyperbole), and yet remained untouched. That in and of itself speaks volumes of his impact on society.

I saw Roberto go after a Ron Fairly line drive down the right field line to inside the foul pole - ball in play signaled the right field umpire. Willie Davis, off a good lead from first dug in and began flying at the sound of Fairly's smash over the first baseman's head. As Willie glanced over his right shoulder to Clemente, he saw Roberto had yet to reach the ball laying fair just inside the foul line. The Dodger third base coach was windmilling his arms stating in effect. "Comon Willie!" Davis hit second base perfectly and steamed on to third. Roberto had grabbed the ball and looking up saw Davis beyond second. Roberto didn't waste any moves and let his throw explode. All of Dodger Stadium as one voice went "Ahhh!" The thrown ball hit Pirate third baseman Beetle Bailey"s mitt right at his knees. The ball was waiting for the swift flying Davis. The umpire didn't have a difficult call as he threw his right thumb up. Davis, the Dodger coach, the stadium fans and me were stunned. We didn't think Willie when he got rolling would ever get tagged out. Roberto had a magnificent arm. Least ways all us fans Willie and the Dodger coach were convinced.

As a 12 year old, I remember Clemente catching a fly ball on the right field warning track in Forbes Field. The runner on third tagged as the catch was made. I was sitting behind home plate in line with first base and enjoyed this wonderful view of a perfect throw that one hopped into the catcher's glove. It wasn't close. Clemente routinely pulled of plays like this. A really underappreciated superstar.

You might be right, at least about the position, given that he was one of the few outfielders that stayed at a particular position for almost entire career. Regarding second statement, I'd be hard pressed to say he was better than some other outfielders (e.g., Mays and Mantle; two players who I watched ... along with Clemente ... growing up). Of 26 notable outfielders I looked at (mostly HOFs), Clemente's ranked 23rd in fielding percentage. And, despite his hight batting average, his offensive metrics ranked him in the lower half of the pool. But we're talking about the best of the best; and he certainly was one of the best.

I don't know if Clemente had the strongest arm ever Dave Parker was pretty close, and so were Reggie and Bo Jackson. And Dave Winfield, too. But Clemente's combination of arm strength and accuracy of his throws will probably never be topped. In that way, he was a freak of nature. I was at a game in 1968 against the Giants. Bobby Bonds, who could fly was a first, and Mays was up. He hit a sinking liner to right center that hit right in front of Matty Alou, and the ball skipped under his glove. Clemente was running over to back him up, and retrieved the ball just in front of the warning track....the wall in RCF at Forbes Field was 408'. Bonds took a token turn around third base and didn't even think of trying to score from first on Clemente. Right around the same time, I was at a game against the Cubs. Bases loaded, none out, Cleo James up pinch hitting for the pitcher. He hit a little looper to right and everybody had to hold to see if the ball was going to be caught. It fell in. Clemente fielded it cleanly on one hop and got the ball to the plate in time to force Randy Hundley trying to score.
