I am tempted to say “what a tragedy”, that we lost this man so soon, but the reality may be that he accomplished exactly what he came on earth to do! I am grateful for Roberto Clemente Sr.

@@stevea6816 that's not for you, me OR Roberto to decide. I'm also grateful for the existence of Roberto though I never saw him play. But he opened so many doors for Puerto Rican baseball players and I cannot/will not, ignore my heritage - as American as I am (even though Puerto Rican's ARE born American citizens). I hear what you're saying. Such a great man, so intelligent and thoughtful - and ultimately to selfless for his own good. It seems pretty obvious to me that he was needed elsewhere. Sleep in peace Roberto - you are missed here more than you know.

My favorite player and in my eyes the best baseball player of my lifetime, treated poorly and discriminated against by the press at times causing him to retreat from the press causing even more problems from the press. A proud man who did not like being called "Bobby" by some announcers and others, always corrected folks that his name was Roberto. He was just a thrill for me to watch with regards to all aspects of the game. Big reason for the 1971 World Series win and utterly devastated me when he passed to the point baseball was no longer that important to me. Just loved seeing him play, no one quite like him and will never be again. Just my two cents!!!!

I was a 10 year old white female kid in suburbia when I started seeing this guy as a hero. I wasn’t one fifth the baseball fan I am now, but even then I knew that man was something special. In his professionalism, outstanding athletic abilities and his personal commitment to character, ethics and justice, he shone then and he still shines now. I saved my sleep shirt from 6th grade that celebrates Pittsburgh Pirate Number 21 (since I am a life-long, die- hard Phillies fan, this is saying something!) and Roberto Clemente remains one of the athletes who has meant the most to me over a lifetime. God bless him and keep him and hold him in the palm of his hand.
