He was ahead of everything. We❤ loved him even when most of us never met him. We admire and value his tenacity and compromise with his family and PR.

No disrespect to the other greats, but he’s the one player that when his highlights come on I always stop to watch. I didn’t get to see him play until he was no longer with us. But I became a Pirates fan because of the brothers of the 1971 squad. My first book report in elementary school was about him. Legendary

Roberto Clemente was a very unlikeable guy. All he did was whine and complain all the time

He was very unlikeable and an extremely irritable person. He had to be a real unhappy influence on that clubhouse. I wouldn’t want to be on his team. Nicaragua authorities refused his aid because he was so insufferable and self righteous. Very unlikable guy. Pirates really did well once he was off the team

For some reason, they cut out the part of his induction speech where he said guys like Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson should be in the Hall of Fame as well. Here's that section of the speech: "Baseball gives every American boy a chance to excel, not just to be as good as someone else, but to be better than someone else. This is the nature of man and the name of the game, and I've always been a very lucky guy to have worn a baseball uniform, to have struck out or hit a tape major home run. And I hope that someday the names of Satchell Page and Josh Gibson in some way can be added as a symbol, the great Negro players that are not here, only because they were not given a chance. And I know Casey Stengel feels the same way, and I'm awfully glad to be with him on this big day. I also know I'll lose a dear friend if I don't stop."

El Orgullo de Puerto Rico y todo Latinoamérica. When I grew up on the island playing baseball, to wear his number was a great source of pride. I got to do it for a few teams. Also got to play against his two oldest sons. They were good people then and they became great men later in life. Thanks to them and his wife Vera the memory and greatness of Clemente lives on.
