Duran had amazing head movement. Avoiding punches while staying in "the pocket" allows a boxer to counter punch. No doubt, one of the all time greats. Duran would have been one of the best in any era. Words like "legend" are thrown around these days too easily. Duran deserves the title of "Legend."

Underrated all time great. Top 5 all time. But he got hit a lot. Great defense but being at distance at times is very important.
@pierovittori10763 жыл бұрын
@@shawngreene4896 He's been hit a lot?? I do not agree, not one bit. No offense but it seems to me as some unexpert statement by who usually has only highlighted one fight in mind (Tommy hearns). To really evaluate Duran first checkut his lightweight career, then the rest of it. He been hit hard sometime, but only when he was passed his prime moving up after he simply broke down the lightweight division. Going up he had been exposed more, no doubt, because from that moment on he faced only guys way bigger than him. Bigger means way longer reach, so the equation comes quite easy to me: he had to close the distance the whole time or so. And that of course exposed him more than before....but that said, just consider, even in that unfair condition, how many times did Duran hit the canvas? Extremely rare times he went down my friend. And we should never forget he was facing legends the whole time (SRL, Hagler, Hearns) or extremely valiant defending champions with crafty boxing and extremely strong punch (Moore and Barkley). No other lightweight in history has ever THOUGHT fighting people that bigger. And that shows the truth: he was a genius of defence. He could pressure bigger guys controlling space, pace and never losing his balance and focus. He relied on his natural, street brawler born-in ability in dampening the opponents punching power even in close quarters, his defense was made of unhuman balace control, very slight surgeonical head movements, distance and body angles variations. One unexpert eye could argue that he was hit hard but was saved by an iron chin...well, look at him now past his 70's...he's still sharp and brilliant. Does not look like somone who took many big hits. Many many legends consider Duran as their master. There's a reason for that believe me.

@combatsportlover69194 жыл бұрын
Leonard was bigger and faster but I don't think he was stronger. I think their strength was fairly even and Duran was more skillful in the clinch. I also think Duran may have thrown more compact blows. I also don't think age is much of a factor when the older fighter is 29. In fact at that age I believe the older fighter has the advantage as he has yet to physically decline which generally doesn't seem to happen to most fighters until their middle 30s and they have an edge in experience. When you combine Age and Experience 28 to 29 is probably the absolute prime for a lot of fighters. Regardless of that it is still an extremely impressive win for Roberto Duran as he moved up in weight to defeat one of the greatest Welterweights of all time in Sugar Ray Leonard.
@frankpavan30443 жыл бұрын

29 is not that old, but Duran turned pro when he was 16 and already had 71 fights before that (compared to the likes of Andre Ward, who retire after 32 fights saying they can't keep up with the rigours of the sport anymore). Not to mention Duran's 30 or so amateur fights before that. In most of the eras of boxing, that's a LOT of fights to be having already. Not to mention Leonard's obvious physical and athletic advantages. Look at their respective hand speeds during that fight, Leonard is almost half again as fast as Duran, not to mention much fresher in his career, yet with already the Olympics and a 27-0 pro record. That victory was an extremely impressive one by any standards.

I challenge you to watch just those fights in slow motion and you can see what Duran does in the pocket. it is a talent unmatched. One second he's staying away and letting you try to come after him, the next he's going all out on offense and has you against the ropes while he's tearing you up with combos and you're wondering how the hell things got reversed so quickly. It's a crying shame that so many boxing fans forget just how good he was at both sides of the game, and write him off as a crude brawler. What's almost as bad is the fact that so many people only remember the portion of his career from the 80s on, when he was fighting legends who were bigger, younger, and less weathered by the fight game.
