The sheer power of the beast, it's a miracle that Man has managed to tame them and that Farriers do this essential and exhausting work with such skill and patience both on the part of the horse and the farrier

When I had horses they did not need to be shod since they were mostly pets and were not used for hard work. So I regularly just trimmed their hooves. One horse liked it so much he would actually lay down and place his hoof in my lap. Our donkey would fall asleep when I did his hooves, so I had to lean him against a wall. Funniest part was waking him up to turn him around and do the other side. He would promptly fall asleep again! His only flaw was that he hated goats.

Succes verder. Jos De Graaf. Docent Kunst- en Siersmeden.

One can save oneself much of the strain and also make it easier for the horse when one properly trains the horses to give their feet. Then brute strength is replaced by the willingness of the horse to cooperate. My horses ( 1050 and 1100 kg) are being shod without a shoeing stock, just cradles to place their feet in and they are relaxed. That being said, this farrier is good.

Yup, training them to pick up their hooves helps. I've cleaned hooves from shetland's to big draft horses of 19hh, all you need to do is properly train them or just lean into them a little bit. This method in the video actually makes it harder and it doesn't help that horses are claustrophobic either.

Happens more often. Front feet wear down more in some cases. Lot of riding horses only have front shoes.

Why can't they just ask the horse to lift up his foot? Horrible way to work with horses.

The farrier can't keep the hoof up with a horse ,as strong and heavy like this, when it pulls. A lot of draft horses are trimmed like this for safety reasons.

So his back will live longer than a week. He does more than one you know. Even a twitch would send the farrier flying.

What are you guys talking about? I have a horse that size, we don't use this handeling anymore in sweden and yes, our farriers survive. Yes it is a big horse, but if you teach it to lift the hoof and whats going on there is really no problem. Sure, its heavy holding the hoof up but a good farrier has training in ergonomik and knows how to stand. Prev owner to my horse did this to her and she has heavy scarring from the ropes, i would never but her trough that again. She is a kind och smart horse, why should i but her in that and use raw force on her if she can be trained to lift her hoof and just calmly stand in the stall while the farrier lifts her hoof with her bare hands? No one gets hurt and my horse trust me and the farrier.
