EQ in effects loop is genius. I set the amp the way I like in my music room. Then those knobs never move. Then if I bring the amp somewhere else, told to turn down the master volume, the room sounds totally different. I then put my MXR ten band in the loop and adjust to get what I want which can be dialing back in the lows, lower mids to get that fullness back after turning down volume or slamming the phase inverter for some kind of output distortion with ppimv turned down. You can just re-EQ for the room as well, while never changing the front panel which always fucks your tone and gain stages up.

I use a Behringer FBQ800 as dual mono EQ in the FX loop of my two Joyo Bantamps. The amps only has a tone knob. I use it as a global eq to get in the ball park, then mess with the tone knob for the clean and dirty channels, respectively, for both amps. I almost always use both amps together, for tone blending. Must say I'm happy with the results. I learned from another channel that you can use an EQ pedal with different overdrives and distortions to make them sound like other pedals, as long as the clipping character/overtone timbre is similar. That channel is Plague Scythe Studios.

EQ in the FX loop in my experience has always worked best with Orange amp, especially the Rockerverb amps where you can dial in and out the actual low and high end response as well as the mids. The key is to keep the level of the EQ the same as the amp volume, and then add in enough low and high end frequencies to even out the mids and keep the amp from sounding so honky. I used to hate Orange amps for a long time until i started using them from the perspective of them being a blank slate amplifier for me to shape and mold the sound of my guitar how i see fit. It’s probably one of the tones i’ve ever played with in my life.

One reason I use an EQ to fix the sound of an amp or pedal: The first Christmas gift I got from my wife was a guitar amp.... I don't think I really need to elaborate. BTW The Fangs distortion helps me get the Judas Priest sound.

eq; the most under rated pedal. i normally don't use one as i like the sound i get from my amps and guitars, not relying on pedals for the sound i like. but i do know that if you're patient and your ears are good enough you can get some pretty convincing p90, humbucker, or single coil sounds depending on what you're looking for.

When it comes down to it, the main difference between amps of similar gain is EQ. If you can't have a room full of amps and pedals, an EQ (especially a parametric EQ, even one channel) lets you imitate a lot of amps. Especially using a boost on input and subtract on FX loop to control saturation and distortion.

I use 3 graphic EQ pedals. Two are set and used to create the vibe of a Fender for cleaner sounds as my Marshall Plexi is left at a very light crunch and I use my Amp-in-a-Box pedals to cover all the dirt sounds from the late 60's thru to 2000. My 3rd EQ I use to get overkill sounds from Fuzz and stacked OD. For that I love the Source Audio Programmable. My whole rig uses 58 pedals which are the best of from over 200 I purchase over the last 5 years. Yes picking the right pedal to do the job is a given but it is not possible to get every makers pedal and try it out first. Add to that some pedals literally cause impedance problems that interfere with other pedals true bypass or not.There are quite simply beyond killer sounds that only an EQ make possible. When it comes to any kind of dirt pedal they can literally change it into an entirely different sounding pedal. Thanx big time to Robert giving us all another great demo/ free tech lesson. Keep in mind guys it is free for us but not for Robert ..so hitting the thumbs up and the Subscribe takes seconds so do the right thing and do that before you go. Besides it is almost Xmas and you don't want your name on Santa's 'Naughty' list.😠

I use my EQ pedal to level out the "hot spots" coming from my guitar. I run the guitar into the EQ pedal first to achieve that. As it turns out, I replaced my bridge pickup with a humbucker and didn't change the volume and tone pots to 500k versus the 250k pots that came with the single coils🤦 I'll be fixing that soon.😁🤘

Hello Robert. I can think [from a personal POV] two reasons to use an EQ with a dirt box you may not be satisfied with: 1 - The dirt pedal costs more than an EQ pedal and has a limited use; whereas the EQ can be used in multiple situations [as it normally is]. This is particularly true when we enjoy the way a pedal distorts but find the range of the "tone knob" limited. As an example, I enjoy the good ol' RAT type of dirt but the way it's voiced could offer more tonal options. An EQ fixes this issue. The same may happen with more expensive pedals that don't offer a good active 3 bands control. 2 - You love the dirt pedal, but somehow your amp doesn't, or the EQ section of the amp is limited for the pedal. An EQ pedal will also fix this issue. This is best exemplified when you want to create an extra Amp channel with that specific dirt pedal in mind. An EQ pedal can be used to either atenuate the undesired harmonics the Amp will receive. Other uses for the EQ you may find good results with: - An EQ pedal as the first pedal the guitar hits is quite good to shape the sound of the pickups [example: if your pups are too bassy, cut those lows/low mids to taste] - An EQ hitting your dirt pedals section as a gain stage.

I have three different amps and I’ve ran the eq in the effects loop of all three and only one of my amps sound good with it in the loop. The other two sound better running it in the front of the amp. It depends on the amp but in my experience you usually get better results running eq through the front of the amp versus the effects loop.

When I was still a teenager I thought that Boss 7 band eq pedal would be the antidote to the shitty tone of my Crate G 40 stereo chorus amp or the Fender M 80 rackmount head equipped with a Dr Fong 2×12 celestion cabinet I had. It did nothing to help all that. I never bothered to try any graphic equalizer as part of my guitar rig again.

Hi Robert. I am wondering what your opinion is on 6 or 7 eq pedals vs 10 eq pedals? Is 10 that much better or do the extra frequency ranges just get overwhelming for many guitarists? Always enjoy your videos. Thanks!
@RobertWJackson Жыл бұрын
Depends on the EQ pedal in question, I suppose. I own both. I suppose a 10-band EQ is more versatile than a 7-band, but one advantage that some of the 10-band models have is an independent level and controls (MXR 10-Band EQ) versus some of the 7-band models that have both of those things in the same control (Boss GE-7). That said, if you’re just using it to further shape your sound or if you’re using it as a boost of some kind, 6-band, 7-band, 10-band, 15-band, 31-band… They’ll all get you there.

Robert MAH-MAN! Fine question, 'bout the word dictionary. 🤣On eq pedals, I have the "normal" MXR 10-Band, but I actually like the Boss 7-Band better. I used to have the Boss, but I gave it to my brother. 😏Maybe the difference between the two (in my ear) is that the MXR is 18v and the Boss is 9v? I don't know much about it, but for whatever reason, the Boss just seemed to respond better and be more "alive" sounding. Of course, that could have had more to do with my setup at the time... or maybe it's because all my other pedals and effects are 9v and mixing in the 18v MXR was a mismatch? I have no idea. 🤔🤗🤣

@@RobertWJackson true... I did a lot of research and found out many of James Hetfield's sound was a para EQ, the specific one he used is 1000's of dollars and a rackmount, but I did find this little gem from Canada and man she is sweet... it's called "pPTSD - Parametric EQ" by Gup Tech... there's also one called EQ from Hell from another guy but it's twice as expensive and built to order but also appears to be the exact same thing basically... The gup tech pedal I have works great and doesn't add any noise and feels well made... metal, not flimsy... only reason I'm being so long winded is because I've used Graphic EQ for years searching for the right sounds but there was always something off... couldn't be happier with the Para EQ
