Well done video . . . its may 2023.. I have a 2002 AWD Astro that I love. . . if you have kids in high school (& a old car) get them into auto shop class ... today my son replaced the 'Original' rusty front shocks while in his high school auto class. Previously he replaced the front brakes . . . Best part about HS auto shop they have a lift that makes it easier to do the repairs which allows them to be more successful the 1st time around.

I just got around to replacing my rear shocks (2004 Chevy Astro) and figured out a way to make the installation at the bottom end a lot easier. On the first shock I jacked up the by the diff and placed jackstands under the axle inboard of the shock mounts enough for me to access the lower fasteners. I cut the wire on the new shock, attached at the top bolt and then had to really struggle, getting myself right under the end of the shock and pushing upwards with all my strength to compress it and get the bolt in at the bottom. I had already watched this video but thought I’d see if I could do it without using a second floor jack since I was already under the vehicle. It worked but was really tough. Before doing the other shock I thought about the process and realized there could be a much better way. I supported the rear of the van at the forward spring shackles (with my floor jack up under the diff just enough for safety backup) so the axle and springs were allowed to extend downwards the maximum amount. My Gabriel shocks (not struts like Trev installed) came wired so the shocks were compressed completely in the box. I mounted the second shock at the top first, then got the bottom bolt ready to install and cut the wire. The shock extended downwards with me guiding it into the correct position and inserting the bolt just as the holes lined up. Easy peasy! Worked perfectly! Since this is the first shock replacement I’ve ever done I have no idea if other shocks come wired, but I have to guess a lot do. If not, I see no reason why you couldn’t use some wire or rope or something else and easily compress the shock with one end on the ground while standing over it pushing downward and then secure it in the closed position with whatever wire you choose to use. I suspect you could probably do it with the same struts Trev used, as the springs appear to be shorter than the extended shocks.

Nice video. That's called a tire iron (I believe) or a spoon. I may well have to do this job myself soon! You come over, I'll buy the beer.

I just put the same shocks in my 03. The hardest part was getting the top nut off the passenger side. Once I got that off the whole job was easy.

I put on the same kind of shocks and I found that if you lift the vehicle with the front shackle for the leaf spring. I was able to do it by my self by just jacking it up or letting it down to get the bolt in the shock.

Could I put a small or large ratchet strap around the new shock to compress, install, then release strap?

Thanks for the video, will be doing this soon but I don't think I'll go with the heavy duty shocks, I'm afraid it will ride too stiff. We don't really haul anything very heavy so I'll probably just go with some good quality shocks, probably KYB shocks if I can find them to fit and they are reasonably priced. I've found a lot of good deals on Rock Auto for parts so that's usually where I look first.

My van was bagged and the leaf spring was removed. Now the bags are flat and wore out. Would these shocks hold the weight of the van? Right now I’m currently sitting on the frame.
