Cold drinks in Denmark aren't more expensive, it's usually more the case that you're paying for convenience. A lot grocery stores have a section for cold drinks inside the store and right outside. Inside the store it's usually normal price, but the cold drinks outide, usually connected to a kiosk, are usually way more expensive. They often frame this by having the drinks being slightly different in size, 0.57L instead of 0.5L, but the price is 25DKK instead of 15DKK. In a similar vein, a 0.5L bottle of coke might be 20DKK but a 1.5L large bottle of coke might be 15DKK, due to convenience.

My ex is Cantonese. We chose from the very beginning that we'd follow the 1-parent-1-languge... it worked very well with our first kid, my daughter is basically fluent in Danish, English and Cantonese. To me that matters because I think it's important that kids can talk to their grandparents (being of partly German decent myself). But my ex hasn't been the same strict regarding the smaller brother... so he kinda prefers English... he's figured out that the kindergarten staff, and his mother, still understands if he use English. I still insist on speaking Danish... but im not sure if he will become fluent in Cantonese... I only know a few clue words... I can't teach him... Anyway, about private and international schools... it's really a mixed bag. Some are great but also some are struggling to survive. The public schools here have free access to animal parks and cultural events, that's something that costs a little money to private institutions. So often the private kindergarten becomes "somewhere you can park your kid"... while the public go nuts exploring nature and arts.

Deepest darkest Jutland... okay that description fits quite well (someone growing up close to Silkeborg). It's not always dark though... in the bright summer months I'm pretty sure we had more freedom as kids than Copenhageners dared to give their own children.

Marked-up cold drinks, must be a Copenhagen thing, they cost the same here in (mid/triangle area) Jylland, but they typically only store the smaller bottles in the fridges (330ml/0,5L), but not 1,5L.

generally speaking all things being equal the same drink being cold will not cost more however usually the drinks in the fridge area cost more than the ones not chilled. Because usually it will be a different size or type that they put in the chilled area in comparison to what's on the floor.

I also think some things are a bit exaggerated, Jylland has Aarhus (and Aalborg), Fyn has Odense, they should be more than comparable to Copenhagen, language-wise, with people speaking English (in the public sector) and expat communities. Sure there are many small towns in Jylland and Fyn, but most people will be more than able to get to one of the big cities if they really want, to network etc. I would not rule out Jylland (Aarhus and down to the triangle area (Vejle, Fredericia, Kolding)) there are many internal companies here, or European/Nordic ones, where most of the times, the official language is English as well. It's in no way exclusive to Copenhagen.

I think one of the reasons many public employees, won't speak in English is due to legal reasons, you can easily mistranslate something (legal wise) even if you are somewhat proficient in English, not because they don't want to help as such, but I agree they should absolutely not just say no and hang up the call, they could advise on translation services, or give pointers on their website, where they might have some official information translated. (Though some old people in their late 60's might not be as good at English, or remember what good public service is about).

It can be challanging moving to a country not being able to speak the language. But i would allso argue that you should be able to speak atleast a broken version of the langage within a year and a half, and be able to speak it fluently within 5 years......i would argue anything else is disrespectful, and im talking as someone who has had to learn three extra languages apart from my own

Then don't watch KZbin. A lot of KZbinrs read from a prompt. These guys only do it for the intro and representation at the beginning. If you can't live with that, you're walking in small shoes, as we say in Danish. They don't even hide, they read off of a screen. They could have done that. So, it's not like it's a mystery.
