Love Robin. He went through a couple of horrendous things besides the train. The fact that he worked through it all and have a good life and reunite with his first children tells me he was one hell of a guy. Came real scary close to losing everything when his ex Molly took his kids.

Robin and Molly were on a train in London that crashed and killed 49 people. He helped rescue people. Very brave young man. I love this song. It was sad but beautiful. He could do anything with his voice singing low or high without any problem.

As others mentioned, Hither Green was in November/67 and he was still only 17. He said it haunted him all of his life. It was just after "Massachusetts" went to #1 and he said that saved his life because he could afford a 1st class coach for himself and Molly and most of those killed were in the next coach which was 2nd class. He helped extricate people who needed on the spot amputations to free them. At that age such a horror would really burst the bubble of invincibility that young people have and make them very introspective. Barry said it changed him. Mo even knew "something happened to Rob" before they were aware of the accident. The twin thing! The shock really hit him at the hospital where he said it was like a war zone. Other survivors remarked that after he helped others and they were sitting atop an overturned coach awaiting ambulances he actually joked with them trying to distract them from the circumstance they were in. They specifically remembered that. The one line in the song, "Friends I thought I had were never there" made me think of something he said about the accident that "Real friends asked me how I was. The others asked me how many bodies I saw". Robin's Reign has a few upbeat songs but even at the time I remember critics said it was a good first solo album but he had to be a little less gloomy and vary the themes. I really liked "Give me a smile", "Saved by the bell" (which was a big hit) and "August October" but most songs were all about love lost. He was after all a balladeer and that suited his voice. Many of his songs were sad. I always felt somebody needed to hug the guy. 😥 I'm sure many would have offered.

@@SunCityLady - I just reread about the accident in their bio, "Tales from the Brothers Gibb". He saw 24 people with rail lines through their bodies. A young man about his age was trapped in the wreckage and crying out "Don't let me die" until the voice faded. Robin said he couldn't get to him. He was holding things together until Hugh picked them up and then he began to sob in the car. The family only found out about the accident when they saw it on TV (no cell phones then) and realized he was on the Hastings train. He told his family "I thought I would never see you again". Barry said he was moody and quick to anger after that. There was no counselling for victims back then. It was unheard of. The very next day although still in shock, Robin wrote "Really and Sincerely". The lyrics are "Really and sincerely I tried".

I’m sure after the train wreck & all he saw that he probably suffered from PTSD, something not diagnosed or treated back then. Bless his & Molly’s hearts that was an awful thing to have to go thru & then some people also have survivors guilt in situations like this, also unknown back then. 😢

I think if this had happened now days than the after affect would be readily explained as PSTD. Back then no one ever thought to give counseling or any type of guidance. He experienced a very traumatic event and was a big part of rescue efforts. This was a very life changing event.

In 1967, Robin and his then girlfriend were in the Hither Green train crash where 49 people died. He rescued some himself even though he was still really a kid himself. I think that changed his writing for that period...he was so affected and traumatised by the horror he'd seen that his music became forlorn. A real hero though.

Some of the people he pulled from the wreckage were dead. Others were having limbs amputated right then and there. Anyone would be traumatized but for a sensitive boy--which he still was--it must have been horrific. Molly later said he helped with the rescue and comforted her at the hospital but when his father picked them up he couldn't stop crying in the car. Braver than I could have been.

Barry said that when he and his father saw him in hospital he was in shock and murmuring about how much blood there was. Awful for anyone but it would have changed him significantly. Short interview a year or so after with Maureen and him defending his actions as his parents tried to make him a ward of the court or similar. Family has been through a lot!

First time I heard this I cried. Wow - what a voice. Robin sings from his soul. A lot of songs if you listen to the words are kind of sad, like him saying most of the friends he had were not there when he really needed them to be. I often wonder if some of these sad lyrics are not a reflection of what happened in his real life. What do you think?

Just a little addition to my other comment. Robin's cd single Please dropped 3 months after Mo died. There's a live version he did on a German TV show. If you can get by the German host you will see Robin in his grief singing this song that will break your heart. No sweet smile just a placid face of pain but the song is beautiful and his voice is so beautiful.

Absolutely agree. He was still a kid when that accident happened. While he and Molly only had a few scrapes, he had to have suffered mentally and emotionally from what he saw. He stayed for 3 hours and helped pull others out including the dead. I can't imagine that horrific scene especially for a teenager. Maurice's twin "Spidey sense " told him something bad had happened and Robin was there.

There were a lot of rumors at the time Robin released this album that radio stations were being paid not to play his singles. This was I believe the second single after "Saved by the Bell" which was a considerable hit making it to #2 but there were people, including his own father who did not want Robin to succeed on his own because he was more valuable as a Bee Gee and the Bee Gees were more valuable with him. (Pa Gibb was on record as hoping Robin "fell on his face" and Barry and Maurice continued to crank out the hits and show they didn't need him. It seems a little cold to wish failure on your son if he wasn't even needed in the family business. Different things I've read over the years and some things Barry has said lead me to think Hugh was tougher on Robin than his brothers. It may just be that Robin to a certain degree occupied his own universe and forget to do things like polish his shoes or comb his hair before a performance and Barry got needled to remind him long after they were very big stars.) I recall my older sisters and their friends crying about how unfairly "poor Robin" was being treated so the rumor had some credibility at the time. Not that the belief of these teenage girls made it credible but it was a widely circulated enough rumor that they knew about it.

I have always loved this song, Robin certainly did touch the soul with his voice. ❤ the train accident happened in November 1967, this was his first album from 1970, he continued with his solo career throughout the bee gees years. His brothers actually worked with him on his solo albums, producing and helped in writing many of the songs. Of course this was after they made peace up until Mo's death. After Mo passed away they really drifted apart. Not many of Robin's song were upbeat, he did the love ballads beautifully. "Boys do fall in love" is a upbeat song from secret agent album and shows Robin's range kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaLWfmConatrhNU also "Toys" from the album "Walls have eyes" shows us the solo artist kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGGzp4iEg7l9p80

If you want to hear more upbeat music from Robin’s solo catalog I would recommend pretty much any track from the 1984 album Secret Agent. My personal favorites are Boys Do Fall In Love, In Your Diary, Rebecca, King of Fools, and the title track, Secret Agent. The album definitely has a mid-80s sound to it, featuring a lot of keyboards, synthesizers, and layered vocal tracks. I always got the impression listening to it that they were having fun during the recording of this album and I think it really comes through in the music.

It happened in the late Sixties I think, I know it was before 1970 cause it happened while he & Molly were dating. They were on their way back from visiting her parents that weekend. And yes, Maurice made a statement before that the things that Robin saw that day, while helping to recue people from the wreckage changed him. So many dead bodies, people who lost arms & legs & People he tried to reach & couldn’t . After that he had trouble sleeping & he didn’t laugh like he did before. I feel so bad for what he had to see & hear that day when he wasn’t but just a kid himself. Sad that the wreck had to happen at all. 😢💔

Golden voice, he had! Just like his brothers, which are also first class singers. No one above or beyond the other. I own every kind of gibb-bros.-music, so I'm a die hard fan, just collecting all material. Not only official LP's, CD's, DVD's or Blue Rays and Bootlegs. By myself, I often sing the songs 'One Million Years', because it's not easy to sing and 'August October' because of it's lovely waltz-rythm, together with my friends so we're a hobby-musician-trio, far away from pro, but not bad! So let's get serious. The whole album is musically (not his vocals!) poor, just like putting demos together. And I not only mean the instrumentation. The whole production lacks. And the songwriting isn't Robin at his best. Where are maj 7's, key-changes or bridges from verse to chorus? Hard to find! Much more I like his best one, 'How Old Are You' and 'Magnet' or '50 St. Catherines Drive'. Always the strangest thing to me was, what the hell he wanted to say with the title, 'Robin's Reign'? Think his youth those days and wrong influances outside the bros.Gibb-family, which also made him leaving the band, are the cause. He really must have thought, I'm the next Supa Dupa Star, not in need of my brothers at all. But he changed his mind, beeing grown up more and made a phonecall. That's greatness, Bee Gees were reunited.

Robin’s voice is sensational on this album but the there are some very weak backing arrangements and poor production, no doubt a product of the circumstances of its creation.
