Robin is a trickster. He lies and deceives others (For a good cause) but he loves Marian so much that when he heard she would kiss the tournament winner, he knew he had to be there for it. It was obviously a trap. He knew he'd be risking getting caught and executed, but to him it was worth taking that chance. In what he thought would be his final moments, his last words, he was going to tell the truth. That he loves Marian 'more than life itself'.

Out of all Disney's animated movies, I think I like Robin and Marian as one of their best couples. I love that they don't meet, fall in love and get married all in this one movie. They have a long history established together even before the movie starts. and I love that they're so funny, but it's not at the expense of each other, instead the comedy comes from how much they're both on the same page with one another. After this scene there's this big sword fight where they're just gushing over each other in the middle of it. Robin swinging a sword around: "I know we haven't seen each other in years, but let's get married!" Marian trying not to get hit: "This is the most romantic proposal ever! YES!" Robin: "We'll honeymoon all over Europe!" Marian: "YEAH! Let's have a dozen kids!" Robin: "ABSOLUTELY!"

I'm a rancher, and also the frontman of a metal band who lives in the middle of nowhere. I hadn't seen this movie once since I was, oh, about 6, and I just rewatched it a couple weeks ago and fell absolutely in love with the film. As someone who's never really experienced love, Robin and Marian's love is the most perfect and beautiful love I have ever seen. I'm never, never, sad. And this movie had me in a puddle for a good week. The love scene/song is just perfect. Perfect. It really spoke to me deeply as I live in a vast, open, and empty desert, where I'll just walk, and walk, and walk for miles into the nothing letting my mind wander, and enjoying the utter silence and peace... always alone. And it got me thinking; "Wouldn't it be nice, to share my world with someone? Have someone sit next to me on my little mountain and enjoy company?" But I know that type of love expressed between Robin and Marian is very, very rare. Something only a very lucky few in this world will ever experience. Will I ever get that chance? Only time will tell. For now I'll remain in my secluded little world, far, far away from everything...

What's funny to me about this scene especially is that beheading back then was usually reserved for the nobility because it was rather painless if the executioner was good in his aim. So in a way Prince John was going to have Robin Hood executed in an honorable fashion even if he may or may not have realized it at the time. Talk about ironic 😅.

This scene is a masterwork. They had put together maybe the best voice cast of any Disney movie (Peter Ustinov / Prince John, Brian Bedford / Robin Hood and Monica Evans / Maid Marian), and the way they act clearly is absolutely top-notch. And the drawing/animation is absolutely another level - Who would have ever bet anthropomorphic animals can be as expressive as World-Class actors? And yet, they are, and we can share their feelings. Not ever been that much into animation, but this movie is a unique gem. I wouldn't even label it as a movie, it's more like a modern version of a medieval bestiary, or an epic take on the animal fable in the style of Aesop.
