John's scheme here would not go over well in real life. Bare in mind this is 12th Century England and the Roman Catholic church was a major part of the society. Hanging a cleric would probably result in him being excommunicated. They probably wouldn't be too thrilled to know that the reason Friar Tuck was arrested was because he objected to the Sheriff collecting taxes from the church (and from a charity box no less). But then again the first Mendicant order wasn't founded until 1209, after this movie was supposed to take place, so what do I know?

I don’t blame you! After all, trying to kill a member of the clergy resulted in complete excommunication and even the death penalty under the Catholic Church’s Canon Law in 12th Century England. With his plan of hanging Friar Tuck, Prince John was making a BIG MISTAKE. God our Father-In-Heaven would have sent a shower of asteroids ☄️ crashing down on Earth onto Prince John’s head for sentencing His humble servant Friar Tuck to death-by-hanging, and the Pope would have also excommunicated Prince John and handed down/imposed a death sentence on Prince John, and, upon imposing the death sentence on defendant Prince John, the Pope would have said to Prince John, “May God have mercy upon your soul,” followed by, “Court’s now in recess.” Friar Tuck is a very warm, kind, caring, friendly priest who does nothing but good for his community, and for his flock. He is gentle, too. And he stands up for what he feels is right, too! He cares about his congregation.
