Thank you all for your encouraging comments, and for all the great work you do to help these birds in need. Compassion for a fellow creature raises us all to super-human status, if you ask me. I love seeing the great work you all try to do saving birds. REMEMBER: job one, is to put it back in the nest!! No one can raise the bird better than the parent bird. I never take a bird if there is a viable nest, or any way for the parent to feed it. Honestly, it is best to stay out of it, and let the parents do the work. I only intervene, when there is no nest, no parent, or if there is immediate urgent need to save the bird's life. Knowing when to help, and when NOT to help, is the hard decision we all make. Great vibes everyone, fly on! I can only help birds when my time allows, and my time only allows, when the bills are paid... :-( So if anyone has the means to help, consider donating to my campaign: www.gofundme.com/the-bird-expenses

I wouldn’t necessarily agree. How many birds survive after being hatched? The parents only feed the strongest and loudest and the weakest birds seem not to make it. It breaks my heart. I think if there is say 6 birds and one or two have fallen out, by feeding those two birds you are allowing the other birds in the nest to be fed themselves. I know what you are saying, by nature doesn’t mean ALL will survive. If you look at moths for example, I believe it’s 1 in 200 that survive from being a caterpillar. By nurturing caterpillars and allowing them to become moths, you’ve increased its 10 fold. I’m not saying all the time, but there’s a reason why you found the bird in distress as you did, by returning it back it could also mean more distress for the bird. What you did was the right approach if you ask me. It’s a guarantee of their existence unlike returning to their nest.

I enjoyed watching both documentaries, they eased my depression. I love nature, especially birds. It’s sad when they fly away for good, but when the instinct to be afraid of humans kicks in that’s a good thing and like you said, your job is over, if you want to call it a job. I’ll call it a rewarding experience. God bless & take care.

@@kenorris6151 You obviously haven't watched Mike's videos for long. He makes himself and his home and care available for as long as they need; even after they are gone, Mike offers his home, food and care when and if they come back, until they want to be out on their own. He also doesn't let them go until they are ready to feed themselves and care for themselves. Sure, life is uncertain and you can't protect them fully 100% but best to return them back to their true home and let them live the life that a bird was meant to live and deserves to live, just like you get to live your life as a human and not locked up. Mike gives them their best shot and now they get to go off and make their own nests, meet their little birdie mate and make babies of their own instead of being locked up in a cage and at the mercy of a human's decision. Maybe things don't work out but maybe they do -- at least they get their shot. Bless you Mike for giving them a shot that not many lost little baby birdies get! Two more little babies out in the wild and many others you let go too. :) :)

Thank you, Mike. ❤ All of these years later and you're still helping regular folk such as myself. I have had my American Robin, named Carl, for over a month and your videos have been particularly helpful. I thought my buddy was ready to be on his own after a month and he does very well in terms of flying and staying away from everybody but me. He even eats and drinks on his own, despite still wanting to be fed like a baby. Although, when I left him outside on his own for a of couple days,(with water and just a bit of extra food), he lost too much weight, so I brought him back inside for feedings, giving him a high calorie diet of kitten food soaked in water, giant meal worms, nightcrawlers and red worms as well as some native berries from outside,he still doesn't seem ready to survive on his own. Despite him disappearing at night as well as managing to eat some insects and berries on his own. I play videos for him to watch indoors of other birds, mostly robins. Buy he has gotten sassy with me, like an angsty teenager in the last few days. As soon as he gets to a healthy weight again,, I will leave him back outside again. I hate it's so close to fall here in Ohio, I hope he can survive without as many bugs since it's the end of August right now. His sassy attitude gives me faith in him. I hope I am doing right for him. Thank you again. ❤

I am taking care of one baby right now, the rest of her family fell victim to a hawk and I found her on the pavement path at the nature trail right after encountering the hawk who flew by me as I approached the area. She was sitting in the path cheeping and I could not just leave her sitting there to die. I now have a two week project on my hands but I am happy to help Gods creatures. I can not understand why there are some nestlings right here at the end of July, a second brood? My the father of the universe smile upon you my friend.

I too get lots of different birds in my back yard but every so often I get a red-shouldered hawk which amazes me and I love to watch. I'm torn between wanting him to make his home in my back yard and not. Sigh. Life is a balance and there is always the predator and always the prey and there isn't one without the other, sadly. As far as second broods, I have had a year where a third family of Doves has made a nest on my front patio its home, just as soon as the two babies made off on their new lives, the new family moved in and made great use of the empty nest for their little ones. So that was 6 babies in one year! Ahhh can't have too many baby birdies, to increase the population!

Ever since I've rescued and successfully released a wild duckling and 2 house wrens I've researched such sources and found out in wonder that scientists know extremely little about the actual "internal life" of wild birds -- we know scientific facts... but when it comes to these wonderful creatures' communication, feelings, individualities, their attempts to bond with us,... their tiny souls... science with its cold approaches cannot learn much. People who raise birds with love and kindness are in the best positions to provide answers. Thanks for a wonderful documentary.

I had a baby starling that fell from a nest which I couldn’t reach to return. He only had a little bit of feathers, much younger then your two. I bought a bird cage, and gave the baby a little bath bc he was covered in little mites. I made a nest using a bowl with a washcloth and paper towels that he would sleep in. At night I would bring the bird cage in and cover it, and in the morning I would bring the cage on my patio. He stayed in the cage for the majority of the day. There were a lot of predators. For food I soaked dry kitten food (protein) crushed up a tumbs (calcium) ground up some egg shell into a powder (calcium) and I would feed cut up grapes (the baby’s favorite) and I would give mealworms as well. I fed the bird about every twenty minutes to a half hour and used tweezers or half a straw which i cut to make a tiny spoon, or just my fingers. After the first week he had almost all his feathers and could jump around a little, halfway through the second week he was jumping up to the bars on the bird cage and really chirping, so much so that the mother heard him and started to feed him through the cage! I was able to record her feeding him while she would grab hold of the bars! After about the forth time she came and fed him in about a 45 minute period, I opened the door to the cage, and she took over from that point on. Every hour or so I would go out and check on him, and she would come by and be squawking at me and doing sort of like dive bombs at me! Lol so after that I just left them alone. Once the sun went down I would close the cage and cover it, but now I left it out on my patio. As soon as the sun started to come up, I’d go out and take the sheet off of the bird cage and open the door. I still fed him the first couple times in the morning, but only the grapes and mealworms, he jumped out and followed his mom and siblings on the third day of his mother feeding him. I watched them all for about a week in the yard, and then they were gone! I’m just glad that I could save him, bc his other two siblings who had first fell from the nest didn’t survive. :(

You were so kind to rescue these birds! I'm a little jealous because I was not able to rescue the wild animals that I tried to save. I tried to save a rabbit that had hit it's head hard on a tree and a crow that got entangled in fishing line. In both cases the animals died. Even though I removed all of the fishing line from the crow, it could flap it's wings but not fly, so I gave it food and water and kept it home for the night. The next morning it was dead. If you want to have more robins come to your yard, I recommend planting a mulberry tree. robins love mulberries.

This was wonderful! I am raising a robin myself after a tropical storm hit Delaware 8/4/2020. I found the bird on the lawn and I too waited for the mother to return but she never did. It is now 5 days later and he/she flies a bit but doesn’t get height. My neighbors feed feral cats so I’m afraid to let it go until I know it can really fly well. It appears to be quite tame so I’m hoping it does fly away. I’m hoping its instincts kick in. Great videos!

I am often asked what to feed an abandoned baby bird. In this new video, I explain what, how, and when to feed an orphaned nestling. Good luck in your rescuing! And remember, only get involved when there are no parent birds tending to their little one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYS4f4yBfZqmrqs

Very cool. Had robins nested in my hanging plant. They fell several times. Put them back until they flew away

Nice video. Will have to follow your advice if my husband paints near a nest on a house. If the mother robin doesn't come back to make sure her eggs have hatched we will be there for her babies.
