Yea, I remember people not knowing back then that Robin was not the singer. My cousin got downright irritated with me when I suggested it. We were looking at the photos on the "Robin Trower Live" album. He was like "what do you think he's doing right there" pointing at his mouth. I said "making a funny face", which is what Robin did often. I said "where's the microphone? and then pointed to a picture of Dewer singing in to a mic on the back. "Well he doesn't sing on all of them, then". I said "I only here one voice, I also here at the end of one of the songs 'Thank you, James Dewer vocals. I'm the musician here, BTW I know these things. Boy he was pissed at the whole idea and just wouldn't accept it.

You're 100% correct. When I hear Robin I hear Robin Trower and NOT Robin Trower trying to imitate Jimi Hendrix. Only simple minds would think that. Having said that, Robin's playing _is_ Hendrix-esque without sounding like he's trying to imitate Hendrix. Does that make sense? It does to me.

Norm Vance Agreed ,_ I would like to add that I see them as completely different animals and I don't feel it does tribute to this great band to compare them to another band just because they use strats , marshalls and electric blues. The Trower band is the magical combination of the 3 special musicians that happens so rarely, much like Cream . Love Jimi, especially his rhythm guitar comping style . Jimi was a great and colorful unique character and an innovator though also a guitarist faking his way through the vocals and his album cuts could be inconsistent and spotty . I much prefer the song writing , lyrics singing and albums of Trower. Bridge of Sighs is an album masterpiece , much like Sgt. Pepper for the Beatles. The band should have stayed with that producer and recording studio as they really know how to work with Trowers kind of band.

Come to think about it SRV kept the Sound around too before his untimely Death..Who knows SRV might have been just as good or even better then Hendrix if he had lived.
@shamrockrancher7673
@shamrockrancher7673 9 жыл бұрын
+Norm Vance Arguably, he was. Personally, and with all due respect to Jimi, I find SRV more palatable. I lived in Austin back in the early 80's before SRV was discovered... he was a local. My ex and I used to go see him just light it up. You could see him two nights in a row and he wouldn't play the same set and if he played the same song two nights in a row, he played it differently. SRV ruined live music for me. With one or two exceptions, every musician I've seen live since has let me down. SRV was the best I've ever seen and I've seen a lot.
@samoneil9600
@samoneil9600 9 жыл бұрын
+Shamrock Rancher right on. SRV is untouchable. he has some peers, but not many. check out the UFO album called FORCE IT...Michael schenker is a fucking shredder. jimmy page had his moments. check out Adrian belew, formally from king crimson. also Robert fripp. the list is endless, but SRV sits atop it.

I saw this same tour down at UCSB. Journey didn't even have an album out yet and I didn't know who they were. Thought I recognized Greg & Neil, and the drummer was wild (Ansley Dunbar). But Robin's guitar work on "Confessin' Midnight" launched me into space, and I didn't touch down for days!

I have been lucky enough to see Trower 4 times in Minneapolis. Every show was mesmerizing. I literally stood 4 feet away on 2 of the shows (at the Cabooze) and just watched him play. It was incredible to see how far he could actually bend the strings into the sound he wanted. One of the more gifted guitarists ever.!!!

I've had the Bridge of Sighs vinyl for umpteen years. About 3 years ago I "actually" listened to it again. I found an appreciation that I didn't have prior. It's one of my favs now and, to me, is a timeless rock album. Wish the kids today could/would appreciate it as it deserves. As good a trio as ever.....Police, ZZ, Rush, you name it!

Wow!! - had I known this film existed before...!!! Such a TREASURE! I was Here. At Winterland. At THIS concert. I feel 17 again. I can't begin to describe all the emotions that come rushing back to me, 40 years later. It makes me sad, though, as this was such a Beautiful time span, and I miss it so. A gorgeous decade free from war, the struggles of the 60's, and the relative meaningless of the 80's and beyond. I'm so grateful to have enjoyed this time, and wish I could live it all over again. Sweet, simple and honest. Bare to the bone - where Soul was reborn and freed to take flight to skies filled with sparkling stars.... Thank you, Robin Trower, for bringing so many Souls through to raw, pure Joy and ecstasy. Your obvious utter Joy and true humble appreciation of bringing pleasure to every person in the audience through your music is unequaled. I hope to meet you someday.... I would love to hear you play Daydream again. ♥

Since the U.S. election I have been finding solace on KZbin with favorite musicians like Robin Trower and others from my 1969-70's concert-going era. Winterland and Fillmore West, mainly. Even the many fine comments are a relief to see instead of the things being said elsewhere online about politics.

AS I AM WRITING THE "COMMENT", it is May 23rd of 2015; and on this day 40 years ago, I attended a concert in Birmingham, Alabama , which featured as its headliner The Robin Trower Band, with opening act Golden Earring. Earlier that Spring, Trower had released his "For Earth Below" album; and my fondness for the radio-"hit" entitled "Shame the Devil" from that album had persuaded me to see the band in concert. I came to this posting this evening to relive that concert. ~ "Thanks" to KZbin, and "Rock on TV" !

@charliebe28 I saw Robin and Golden Earring on the same tour, in San Diego. The difference between your show and mine was the headline act: Poco. I mean really? WTF! How lame was that? Most of the audience left before their set was halfway through. Biggest lineup faux paux ever! And I've seen a great many concerts. At any rate, Robin, James, and Bill stole the show. Bill was from San Diego.

I was at that concert what a gig. There was so much marijuana smoke in the air that I was high without actually smoking any. The crowd was rowdy and the practically knocked the barricade over in the front then a lot of event security guys came up there and righted the barricade. It was sooooo loud that to me, in the front, I could barel;y make out the songs they were playing. I was thinking they sucked and went out of the main auditorium to the foyer where there were bars and was shocked that I could hear it perfectly and it sounded awesome. THAT IS LOUD!

+Gustavo Mesquita I don't throw around words like "best" when it comes to music, because to me whatever's "best" is what hits the spot at any particular moment. But I keep coming back, over and over, to the same three guys you mention. Certainly they were three guys who could bring it, chops-wise, but they were also three guys who consistently stuck to their styles, and played with a sort of musical honesty that gives what they did a timeless quality. I'm slightly too young to have seen Jimi, but I saw Rory 3x before he died, even getting the Rory "handshake from the stage" one night. Hoping to see RT for the 3rd time (after several missed opportunities) when he rolls into town a few months from now. I never would have imagined, when I first saw him in the 1970s, that he'd still be out there, still creating and releasing new material, after 6 decades of doing it to it.
@ampsplus
@ampsplus 8 жыл бұрын
+Kurt Goff Yes, he is great, but do not forget, Albert Lee has had many. many years to hone his craft. Jimi had from his teenage years to 1970. A finite span, with many, many accomplishments in there. It is the same argument with Eric; he has had many, many years to hone his playing. It is foolish to compare.
@stratman457
@stratman457 8 жыл бұрын
+ampsplus that is it right there...when you look at what Hendrix accomplished in a short time frame compared to many, is out of this world and Jimi is still at the top of the heap. And then you look at how many musicians have lived long and wasted their time and talent.

'Robin Trower Live' blew my mind. I listened to it for months endlessly. Went to sleep to it every night. I was naive when I first picked up the album. I assumed that Robin Trower was the guitar player and the singer. I would later find out that the singer was James Dewar (the bass player), easily one of the greatest rock/blues singers of all time,.... of all time. I mean no disrespect to Lawrence but the band was Trower and Dewar. Together they wrote and performed some of the greatest music ever performed.
