I had a personal experience meeting Robin Williams and that description totally tracks. I saw him in the audience of a play and wanted to say hi to him at intermission. But when I reached him, I was on a line of people going in one direction and he was on a line going in the other. I suddenly realized I didn't want to draw all this attention to him, so kind of froze up. He must have seen it on my face. He looked right at me, smiled and gave a little wave. I waved back, my jaw must have been on the floor. And then it was over. He totally made that moment happen for me

I met Eric Idle at intermission of a play in London in 1991 and he did exactly as he showed here. I said "Mr. Idle?" and he reached out his hand and said "Call me Eric, are you enjoying the play?" I introduced myself, thanked him for his work, we exchanged views on the production and that was that. He was polite, engaging, and used my name as we parted.

I met Conan out in the world once, and he was exactly like this with me. He could tell I was surprised and speechless when I saw him, so he just reached out his hand and said, "Hi, I'm Conan!" Warm and gracious, made me feel special, but also like we were just a pair of regular guys having an everyday conversation. I only stumbled a bit when I told him how much I've enjoyed his show since I was a little kid, etc. etc... started feeling awkward and self conscious. He just smiled and casually said, "Oh yeah, I've been on the air for a long time." Living in LA you meet a lot of celebrities, but it's the ones that you've loved since childhood that hit a little differently.

Obviously most of us out here didn't personally know Robin Williams like Conan or Eric, but the empathy they describe - it was so powerful, it affected those of us who never met him. There aren't many people in the public eye who continue to affect me emotionally as strongly as Robin Williams does. This story actually pulled tears out of my eyes and they're rolling down my face right now. What a guy. And Conan - I am continually grateful for your presence in showbiz. I'm 34 now and have been a big fan since the Late Night days. You and your team do a great thing, not just by making us laugh every day (which is an underrated contribution to society) - but stories like this and your talk with Eric Idle really hit deeply. I happened to see Robin while I was in Afghan. After the show, my friends said they were going to hang around and try to meet Robin. I told them they were crazy and as if he was going to hang around and shake 1000s of peoples hands. An hour later they came back with multiple photos of them and Robin, shaking hands, joking around, multiple selfies with Robin holding the camera etc. It blew me away that someone so famous would hang around and talk to us nobodies. Kind of a bummer but it did teach me a valuable lesson - its worth taking a risk and feeling silly for something special. Even if it feels like a long shot.

I don’t think there’s ever been a celebrity whose passing genuinely hurt me, other than Robin Williams. No disrespect to any other great entertainers, but I don’t know them personally so it’s like “oh that’s sad” and then I move on. Robin Williams was a once in a lifetime personality. He’s been a comfort in my life since I was a small child. As a 90s kid, it seemed like he was in everything I watched. And he was so versatile too; he could make you laugh or cry. Left such an impact on me. Usually, genuine pain over someone’s passing, or missing them, is reserved for a family or friend; someone I knew personally. But he’s the rare exception. I still miss Robin. There will never be another.

0:45 -- there's a famous therapeutic technique where you ask the patient to be as kind and caring and considerate to yourself as if what has happened to you happened to a small child. It is very effective. Another technique is to record your negative talk about yourself or dismissive talk about your own problems and send them to your therapist, then re evaluate what you said and why you said it. All of a sudden this will reduce. Then all of a sudden you are more caring of yourself and less dismissive against yourself, respectively.

Robin had a very mixed reputation among stand-up comics. If he showed up at a club to do a set, they would scrap the night's lineup and put him on. Even though he would cover the lineup's pay, the talent were often frustrated because the people at the club would remember Robin and not the talent on the marquee that night. His mind also worked so fast that he retold or incorporated others' jokes to a degree that some refused to use their material around him. He knew this was a problem and voluntarily wrote $1000 checks every time another comic called him out on it, but, again, the jokes were ascribed by listeners to Robin and not the original creator. That said, he also mentored many and he did sometimes go to shows just to watch, often from a hidden vantage point so as to not distract from the stage. He was also generous with his money, helping cover bills for some comics. He was, to borrow something I heard from Adam Savage (who has found memories of interacting with him while working on Bicentennial Man), one of God's own prototypes, after which the mold was broken.

As a veteran of some very violent childhood experiences I can vouch for Eric's and Conan's insight about downplaying one's own experiences but reacting vehemently to similar experiences in another. What I learned through years of work is the empathy one has for another and vice versa is the most powerful tool for healing there is. Whenever I encounter someone flailing away at their lives trying to come to grips with violent history, I suggest finding someone else with similar experiences and show them empathy. This practice saved me.

I've got ADHD something terrible, and that wild and crazy kind of energy he had, seeing that as a kid in an adult, made me feel like I was gonna be okay. "Oh, so that's what happens to hyper kids like me, they grow up and make me people laugh/happy." Hearing stories of his generosity and kindness just...it fills up my heart so much and breaks it at the same time. To have that validation of what a good person he was and the realization that he is gone...man, it still hurts. Love you, Robin. I never met you, but I'll never forget you.

I sometimes wonder if Robin’s depression would have been lessened enough and he would still be with us if more people knew what a kind and generous spirit he was and recognized him for it. Often depressed people are genuinely kind and generous but part of it is a subconscious need to feel good from making others happy. Maybe if more of us were able to see it or he was able to show it more publicly he would still be with us. He was a massive loss to show business and the comedy world, but he was a rarified giving, kind spirit who was a MASSIVE loss to people who knew him well. As a Gen x’er I grew up with Robin Williams and still laugh uproariously at so much of his work but now I’m often left with a little melancholy after. I miss him, and always think “damnit maybe if more of us knew how he was suffering we could have given back what we got from him and he would still be here.”

It cheeses me how no one ever mentions Eric's greatest role of all time. Wreck-Gar the Junkion in The Transformers.

It really feels like the world started falling apart after we lost Robin. That pillar of empathy was really holding the fabric of things together.

The world is a poor place without Robin Williams.

I love when some people talk about their worst moments and they’re like “so I was in such a terrible state that I just lied on the floor in my living room in my house” and I’m like “… you had a house? And you’re sure this was your worst moment?” And I know that problems are individual, but some times you need to remember that even St your worst you have a lot to be grateful for.

I don’t think there is a moment that will go by that I don’t miss Robin Williams comedy and spirit he seems like such a kind soul that I wish he could have gotten the help he needed

Even when Conan imitates Robin Williams voice with "How are you holding up chief?" I get choked up.

One of my favorite collaborations between Robin Williams and Eric Idle is FAERIE TALE THEATRE's "The Tale of the Frog Prince", written and directed by Eric Ide, starring Robin Williams as the Frog, with Teri Garr as the Princess... 🐸

I think he's talking about Helen's Cycles in Santa Monica. I used to work there. It was frequented by celebrities. I met and got an autograph from Priscilla Presley there and gave it to my grandmother, who was a huge Elvis fan... she cried.

I think Conan's story is a testament to how much Robin longed to make connections with people. It seemed like making connections helped keep him going.

Idle in European Vacation was absolutely hilarious. He is a gem.
