Actually, everyone that spoke in the clip are now dead. Johnny Carson, Danny Thomas, Robin Williams, Walter Lantz and Grace Stafford. Thanks to all of you for your contributions in television, film, and animation. It;s a shame that Walter never actually won an Oscar though the honorary one is good enough. Lantz while not well known today, he and his wife Grace Stafford helped gave a screwy bird life. Grace was his voice 30 years before retiring, Of course Robin from tv to film, he to has left a lasting impact. Danny Thomas outside of tv, the Saint Jude Hospital is by far his most important work. Johnny Carson, while not the first late night talk show host, he was by far the biggest star of late night tv for many years. Getting back to Walter Lantz, he had a long career in animation nearly 50 years and his characters can still still make people laugh. Rest in Peace to all of you and just know that none of your work in Hollywood and beyond will never be forgotten.

It's rather interesting that on this clip, I saw more people associated with television than with movies. Lantz truly deserved the recognition given him that night--he was active in animation from the early 20s to the early 80s!!! Incidentally, Woody makes a cameo in a number of George Pal's sci-fi films (he is in "War of the Worlds"--but difficult to see, and in "The Time Machine" a little girl running up some steps, drops something and picks it up--it's a Woody Woodpecker doll!). Apparently Pal and Lantz were great pals (no pun intended!)

BTW this was animated by Virgil Ross, for Filmation. He said the studio air conditioning was too cold for him, yet Filmation did nothing about it. Virgil built a complete enclosure surrounding his desk out of Filmation scene folders, to shield himself from the frigid draft. He still managed to knock out that animation, so I guess you can say it was worth it.
@stephenholloway689310 ай бұрын
How did Filmation convince Universal or Lantz himself for that matter to do that bit for the Oscars that night anyway? I know his studio was closed by this point and Universal didn't get the full rights to Woody yet.
@Kaden-q5r2 ай бұрын
@@stephenholloway6893 This is me, the same guy from the Dianne Kelley account, now under this name. I don’t know why they chose Filmation, but it’s likely because it was the closest studio who could animate Woody properly without making him look like say…a Hanna-Barbera character. It’s also likely Lantz favored that studio because Ross was working there, and he had done so much good animation on Woody in the early 70s.

I always liked Mr. Lantz. I remember watching him host the syndicated "Woody Woodpecker Show" weekdays after school in the early 60's. As I was mesmerized by the mysteries of animation as a child, I especially enjoyed the segments where he showed how his cartoons were made. Although I understand the process far better now than I did when watching these as a child, it seems to me still that with so many preliminary planning going into the creation of each & every short, it remains a wonder as to how a single one is ever ready for completed presentation. Mr. Lantz' characters aren't much known today, including Woody, but his cartoons were very fluidly animated despite tight budgets. Lantz believed in the best possible quality given very restricted studio budget, creating new theatrical cartoons into the 60's, long after most studios closed down their animation units.

"Is it true what the National Enquirer said about (Woody Woodpecker) and Betty Boop?" LOL! R.I.P. Robin and nice appearance by Woody himself, voiced here by Lantz' wife, Grace Stafford. BTW, Robin did a funnier version of the "sealed envelop" segment when he simply demanded the two reps of Price Waterhouse to "open up those suckers" at the beginning of a future Oscarcast and referred to them with "Boom boom" later in the broadcast!

whats with all the comments talking about robin williams, crying about his death and shit.. if we are going to talk about great achievements take a look at walter lantz: he lived up to 94 years old and left a great legacy. I do like robby too but he couldnt cope with his shit and he paid the price. get over it people.. stop whining. And proper respect to Mr. Lantz. thank you for so many great hours of healthy fun in front of the tv. :)

+anaranjadisimo I don't think anybody denies Walter Lantz talents and accomplishments, but with Williams' death still being recent, that's the first thing people think of now. How about showing respect for the man? He, too, accomplished a lot and left a legacy in his career. How he died doesn't change that.
@joancarlestomas9 жыл бұрын
+anaranjadisimo You have no idea of what you are saying. Robin William had a rare type of dementia which led him to death. It can barely be called a suicide. And even if it was, who are you to judge?
