Great video! My Em1 Mark III just got delivered this morning and I have been shooting with it all day....in my back yard.😆 Coming from the Em5 Mark II, the Em1 III is a night and day improvement!! Wow!! The image quality is greatly improved over the old 16mp sensor especially dynamic range. What shocked me the most was the improved autofocus and how fast/accurate it is especially the eye and face detection. The eye af can easily detect my daughter's eye from a good distance and keep up with her which is amazing. I am extremely happy with this camera so far and I can't wait to get back outdoors and use more of the amazing features of the Em1 mkIII.👌😊

As an Olympus fan, I worry about the lack of development/improvement in M43 sensor technology. We are getting a 2016 sensor in 2020. I was expecting something new, some BSI or stacked 24 megapixel sensor with noise improvements.
@weizenobstmusli82325 жыл бұрын
And it is up to Sony to bring a new MFT sensor. Afaik they brought a 34mp and a 47mp sensor. Those are not good for EM1, since they are to slow at readout. EM1 is all about speed. Second thing is, with a new sensor the X whould be completely obsolete. I think they introduce the new sensor in the next iteration of X.

Joystick is added after feedback from EM1X. 20mpx is plenty for all general purposes, HiRes is there too. And really, really improved face, eye tracking. Hi Robin, Great to see inclusion of "my menu", the High Res handheld mode and joystick (which I wish was on the mark 2). The venerable 20 MPixel Sony IMX270 sensor used by Olympus is still a very good performing sensor in 2020, since sensor development is already nearing theoretical limits. For astro the inclusion of starry AF is nice, but to be honest I've never had any trouble using SAF on stars with the em1 mk2. What would have been very nice is the ability to do some type of rudimentary star tracking using the IBIS. My biggest problem, however, is the introductory price here in Australia at $3000 with the 12-45 f4 lens coming in at $1000. No doubt this is early adopter pricing and costs will come down soon. For comparison the em1 mk2 is around $1900 and the 12-40 2.8 lens is down around $630 in Australia.
@pault1515 жыл бұрын
Yes, not all shots need to be of star trails! I agree that it seems that the IBIS could be adapted to extend the time that a star field stays registered. Also I agree that this 1mkIII might finally be enough of a jump that I can justify the upgrade, once the early adopter pricing wears off. But that could be a long wait, the mkII took about a year before it dropped.
@dannygo42305 жыл бұрын
Nice video. Clearly, Olympus is just back tracking the mistake they made with the "X" model. I think the only people who bought those are the KZbinrs. Nice review. I'm looking to change my Sony A7III to the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark iii mainly due to ergonomics and price of lenses.
@craigb83795 жыл бұрын
Hi Robin - great video. The strength of your videos is your depth of knowledge of the OM-D system, so your comparison comments are always so detailed and useful. Keep up the great work. 👍👏👊 This is a modest upgrade, in my view, compared to the M1.2. It is not possible to justify the upgrade, for me. The AF joystick, AF point customisation, hand-held hi- res shot, live ND filters and USB charging are the headline acts IMO but are not significant enough to make the investment (and a significant one at that) justifiable. I was also hopeful of a new sensor, with improved low-light performance. Although I’m not sure how much further the MFT sensor can go. Is Truepix IX a game changer? I don’t know... I’d lean towards no given the lack of/minor improvement in overall performance. I think they missed the mark in not upgrading the EVF given where the competition is at already, let alone where it will end up in the next 3+ years. How is the joystick operation? I have not used this camera or the EM-1X, which I assume is the same. Is there any lag? Can you move diagonally? I shoot mostly wildlife and this would be a great feature so I don’t have to use ‘nose’ AF on the touchscreen. I tried the G9 out of interest last year and found it very unresponsive and no diagonal movement. In Australia right now, the Panasonic G9 is $1750, the E-M1.2 is $2200 and the new camera is $3000. I think this price point is will likely kill it, unfortunately. As an aside, I think the new lens is an odd choice, given the existence of the very good 12-40 f2.8. What are your thoughts? Cheers, Craig
@robinwong5 жыл бұрын
Yes you can move the AF joystick diagonally, no issue with that, and there is no lag when toggling the focusing points. Whether the camera is worth it or not, that is a very subjective topic. I do see it as an upgrade over the E-M1 Mark II.

I love how happy you seem to be, it's fantastic!!! Great review. I have borrowed olympus cameras to shoot with and I'm very impressed. However, I could not get the face and eye detection to work reliably. So, I was hoping for an improved set up (new sensor as well, maybe a back side illuminated sensor for better noise in low light) for eye and face a/f. Does it seem much better than the old system or about the same? I'm looking at Olympus, Fuji, and Sony for my next system which will be my forever system. All three have strong points, and drawbacks. But, I love them all so far. If I had enough money, I'd buy all three. :) Thanks for the review, and thanks in advance for your reply. I'm looking forward to your thoughts. I need to mention, I shoot a lot of club bands in very low light so the eye a/f tracking is very important. Thanks again.

Thanks for your work. Great job. I got the E-M1 III a month ago and loves this camera after 5 OM-D E-M5's. The only thing is the use of a field monitor. That works great, but not for photography. All bracketing function will be disabeled when you put the monitor on. did you know why this is?
@CrotZari4 жыл бұрын
Olympus did some things very right with the EM1-X, and I think they should buld on that. 1. The menus. These are cameras with A LOT of features. The EM1-X have a great feature, the "Star" menu where you can put your most used functions. I would like Olympus to expand on that thinking! Imagine if you could connect your camera to a PC or MAC and run a setup program on your big screen! You could open a "function browser" and list one meny to the left and your the Star-menu to the right. Then just use the mouse to drag and drop funtions from all submenus to your favourite Star-menu. Then to go even further, What if you could drag and drop functions to functionbuttons as well. Imagine the possibilities! And what if each C1, C2, and so on could be setup this way in separate tabs, like a browser. And you could save them to your PC. Then You could make a library of setups for your camera. You could even share your favourite setups, others could download them and look at them in the PC first, and if the like what they see they push it to the camera. It goes without saying that this would be a fantastic feature for professionals with two or three cameras. They could set one up and the push the settings out so easily to the others. The setups could also be named. I would like to see in the viewfinder or om the screen what settings have been high priority when switching between C1, C2 and so on. Imagine turning the mode dial to C1 and have the label "Wild Life High ISO" shown for 5 sec in the upper part of the screen as a label. Or "Wedding with flash" or "Handheld highres landscape". Whatever you named your settings... My point is, the menysystem feels bad and cramped because we can omly see it on a 3" screen. I belive Olympus could really do something uniqe with this! 2. A larger and more high-res viewfinder, PLEASE! The EM1-X was on my "to buy" list until I saw the viewfinder. Amazing optics but still a low resolution viewfinder, and with poor contrast. Why? The EM1-X was supposed to be that M43 flagship that could rival pro-cameras from other brands. To be fair, I love my EM1-mk2, but since I use glasses and have a severe optical fault in my eyes, I have been envious of the great viewfinders in Panasonic G9, GH5 and Fuji XT3. I almost switched camera because of this but I waited for the rumored Pro-camera. The next camera from Olympus better have a great viewfinder or I will switch. 3. Tehthered shooting with a phone or ipad using a USB-cable. I would love it if Olympus allowed you to use your phone with an instant, and lagfree cableconnection, to your phone or ipad. I have a problem with small screens and would love that. 4. Olympus should create a library of Ai-funtions and super updates with Video and photo functions. It costs money to program updates, why not charge a small fee for some of them? Like animal tracking? I would happily pay 4.99$ to get fantastic birdtracking! What if I could download it in my Olympus browser (see point 1 above) and push it out to my camera? Olympus is pioneering the use of software to replace hardware. We have live ND-filter up to 5 stops. Some people might want to pay 2.99$ for the option to go 10 stops? Or pay 2.99$ to activate waveforms when shooting video. What I am saying here is, cameras are now so good, they don´t need replacing every year. That is bad for camera sales. But if each sold camera could be a potential source for income during all of it´s lifecycle, the company would not bleed money. There are a lot of cameras out there. 5 SIZE! The EM1-X have brilliant ergonomics with both vertical and horizontal grip and controls. Like the twin thumbsticks. But the next camera need to have the option to remove the vertical grip! On the other hand, the EM1-mk3 could have gotten a truly great batterygrip like that, but instead it uses the same grip from EM1-mk2, and in doing that it looses out on some functions. I see the need to save money but I still think it was a missed opportunity. A good batterygrip could be more expensive if it houses a good set of ports. If the camera itself only have a micro hdmi socket, the grip could add a full size HDMI socket. Even if the body have Mic in and Headphone out, having optional sockets on the grip could vastly improve the workflow for videographers. I would love to work on a cameracompany and think up stuff like this. It would be so much fun!

What is the preferred lens for this camera based on its size being 12-40/45mm? How about F4 at night? Dose it working well?

Why is it that after watching one of your videos I always want to go out and buy whatever it is that you've been reviewing. This is no exception but funds don't cover desires. And, well, I'd have difficulty explaining away a fifth OMD body to my nearest and dearest! One question that covers all of my OMD bodies, if I leave the shutter permanently in Silent mode, will this give me problems at a later date? Again, thanks Robin, I continue to be a great fan. 👍👍👍

Mr. Wong, what is your opinion on the OM-D E-M1 Mark III vs OM-D E-M1X if size is not an option? In a direct comparison the newer processor vs. older dual processors and other capabilities... do you think Olympus will come out with an OM-D E-M1X Mark II soon? What do you see as pros and cons of the two cameras? Will Olympus update firmware on the OM-D E-M1 Mark III with features they do not offer on OM-D E-M1X?

Will the camera be effected, if using 2 uhs-2 cards? Only with a little less speed on the backup uhs-1 port? 🤔 Or will it just not be able to work with uhs-2 in the uhs-1 port?
@robinwong5 жыл бұрын
If you use both UHS-II, and shoot with both cards, the speed will only be as fast as the limit of the second USH-I slot.

Robin, I really enjoyed your practical descriptions of the Mark iii features. I was wondering how well will the facial and eye locking features would work on animal subjects? Thanks. TMT

They won't work with animals. Thanks for the kind words

Does it track animal "faces" as well? It's interesting how smart it is.

Nope, no animal tracking at the moment

Yeaaaah My Menu! Initially I was very sceptical, it was looking like a very minor upgrade. The lack of new sensor, viewfinder, screen and two UHS-II slots is killing me, but for my style of shooting the Face & Eye AF tracking for photo and video is a great change and for that alone, I may upgrade my beloved E-M1 Mark II.

❤️ I have it since two days and it became instantly my favourite system. The M.Zuiko 60mm 2.8 Macro and the M.Zuiko Pro 10-40 2.8 are the lenses I need for that what is my intention to use it for.

Why? Why? Why did Olympus use 2 different card slots? One is for UHD II and the other is for UHD 1. I REALLY wanted to purchase this MK III but this issue is a deal breaker for me. I just don't understand why they decided to not allow the use of 2 UHD II cards. Please help me understand. Thanks!

I do hope that the Starry Sky AF comes to the 1X via firmware. The 1X has been a bit neglected since launch!
@robinwong5 жыл бұрын
I hope that happens too.
@wildcat10655 жыл бұрын
I agree. Since its launch Olympus has progressively made the EM1X irrelevant, first by firmware update of mkII and then by effectively releasing the same camera in a lighter, cheaper body. Thanks Olympus.
@marcusnz2325 жыл бұрын
@@wildcat1065 Yes it does feel a bit like that. The 1X still has a much better body in my view and a better shutter, plus the better layout of buttons. Hopefully a full firmware update will come soon bringing the new features from the Mk 3. At present, I can't really see why they bother making both.

Dear Robin, Many thanks for the thorough review, hope that you could spare some time to compare the OMD EM1 Mark III to the OMD EM 1 X Camera showing the differences. However; still the Olympus OMD pro Lens series is far ahead better, when compared to all other competitors in M43 Cameras, concerning optical quality and durability with its weather sealed, dust proof, splash proof and freeze proof capabilities.

Hello Robin. Great channel, great review! I heard a different theory on the starry sky af, i.e. that it seeks to minimise the star size in order to focus?! Also, does it have the same bluetooth wake up connectivity as the em5 iii?
@robinwong5 жыл бұрын
Yes the bluetooth connectivity is the same as E-M5 Mark III. I pointed the camera at the sky and half-pressing the shutter button, nothing happens. I move the focusing point around and nothing happens too. I then immediately just fully pressed the shutter button and all the shots were in perfect focus (the stars).
@ViktorGabyshev5 жыл бұрын
@@robinwong Sorry, can that function be useful for shooting the Moon ? Are there some limitations in shutter speed in this mode of focusing? Thank you for your work!
@zweitervorhang5 жыл бұрын
@@ViktorGabyshev i assume it depends on the size and/or brightness of the moon in the picture, as olympus state that the starry sky AF might not work in bright environments e.g. with town lights in the frame. I still believe it is a true intelligent AF as there are 2 modes and the infinite focus position varies from lens to lens and is usually not at the far end of the focus range but slightly before it.
@ViktorGabyshev5 жыл бұрын
@@zweitervorhang Yes, your conclusion is very reasonable. Will see other reviews too. Very interesting feature
