Nice video Robin. My goto for traveling around is the Oly EM1-3 with the 12-100 f4 as it is sync stabilised and weather sealed. Also with my shaky hands I need as much help I can get. Not the lightest but it is versertile and can get some nice close ups with the 77mm Nisi close up lens attached.📸

12-100mm lens is definitely one of the best superzooms around!

Same here, I have the same body and lens and there’s nothing that can compare. I can handhold this setup down to 2.5 sec on a consistent basis. I leave my tripod in the car most of the time as this kit lets me do things no other setup can.

I investigated this lens and the Oly 14-150 when they were newish to the market. The reviewers were almost evenly split with just a slight edge to the panny, but not where I wanted it. But decided that either would do. I found some 14-150 oly on special as a factory referb from UK at a very very good price with as new warranty, I thought this was strange as they were a newish lens, but there was a considerable number on sale, so I thought they might have needed a rework of some sorts and therefor would be well set up and tested. I bought one. The best lens purchase I ever made bar none. Used all the time and been on several bodies from the EP2 through EM5 and EM1. Have some great A3 prints from it, works very very well in the 20-130 midrange but perfectly acceptable at extremes at either end. Like the pany, an ideal lens for walk about and very good range in a small light package. As you say a little dark but for me that's not a handicap as it works wherever I normally go and do. And being in Australia I don't have long dark winters and twilight to contend with. If its dark its beer time.

Robin, you are a brave fellow going into such a dim environment with a superzoom and an original E-M1. I am sure I would have gotten very few usable photos in that scenario. You have the advantage of being a terrific, professional photographer and the results show it.

My first M43 lens. It's a great kit lens for M43. Some purple fringing at the 14mm end, some focus softness at the 140mm end, but the majority of the range between the extreme ends is clean and decently sharp. I like keeping this lens around for those times I think I'll need tighter zoom but want to be lighter/smaller than the 40-150mm f2.8.

Got the 14-140 Panasonic and the Oly 14-150. Love them both! Shot many years under the radar with both lenses when I needed to go simple and light. Although quite slow on the long end, the size and versatility more than hold their against the faster zooms and fixed. Sure, there are some compromises with these lenses, but versatility and range more than makes up for a few shortcomings of these super zooms.

Thank you Robin. I bought this lens this week and I took a photograph at 140mm (280mm full frame equivalent) at 1/20th second ISO 800 and the photograph was sharp. It was inside and not much light and the subject was still and obviously much easier because it was not moving. In my view the Olympus 14-150mm R II lens that I own is better and scores higher in a review by EPHOTOZINE. I think you would be pleasantly surprised at it if you tried it.

I'll add one more plus to your list - it's how I use a super-zoom.... It's really handy to have when you're visiting an unfamiliar location for the first time and you just what to run around taking quick visual notes for review / planning purposes. Good vid - surprised by how well the low-light shots came out. Cheers.

I like Super zooms, they are very versatile and convenient to bring around for travel as a 1 lens do it all. I have the Nikon 28-400 and I brought it with me to Melbourne recently and it was really good enough for everyday shoots including my visit to the Werribee Zoo.

I got this lens as kit when I bought the GH1 in 2010. The focus motor or ibis failed eventually after a few years. Now I have the newer 14-140 3.5- 5.6 which is even smaller and better. Great for Video. But I agree, for wow photos i have to use a prime.

Great honest evaluation Robin. I shoot barrel racing at our local horse ranch. My go to is the Olympus 40-150 2.8. I need to use a zoom for the reach, and because it is fast action in a low light environment. Even with the 2.8 shooting at 640 my ISO never goes below 10,000. I’m happy with the results. The camera I’m using is the OM-1.

I am seriously tempted to try that lens, as user feedback suggests it is the best of the M4/3 superzooms, if you exclude the Oly 12-100 f4 pro. At the same time I'm wary, as I've never been truly happy with the output of superzooms in the past. Maybe I should rent one for a weekend and see how it goes. At the present, I'm more inclined to pack the 20mm f1.4 pro + the 40-150mm f4 pro. A bit more weight and faff, but the 20/1.4 covers low light, close focus, bokeh shots etc. and the 40-150 gives me reach with top drawer IQ. I usually also carry the weightless 12+32 kit lens if I need to wide for any reason. However, the convenience aspect of superzoom is still compelling...

Lovely pictures Robin, thanks for making the video. My first Olympus lens was the 14-150mm f 4-5.6 but I could not love that lens because the images looked so muddy and lacked colour saturation, but that is a personal preference. I haven't tried a super zoom since I sold my Oly 12-100mm f 4 PRO a few years ago BUT I am looking for a lens for my Pany G1/G2 pair to go alongside the 15mm f 1.7 and the Original or Mark II of the Pany 14-140mm for the Optical IS.

I personally think in terms of image quality, the Olympus 14-150mm is quite similar to the Panasonic 14-140mm, not much difference side by side. During my brief testing on Olympus 14-150mm (you can find my blog articles) I thought the lens produced very decent results!

Everybody is prime lens shooter until 12-100/4 is attached on his camera ;)) But I also bought 14-150 as it is smaller, lighter and image output is good enough for light walks. Superzoom is definitely good to have in bag even if you have couple of fast primes. Sometimes unpredictable things happen and having such range available can save a lot of shots which would not happen. Like I was shooting some portraits with K3 and Sig 35/1.4 and suddenly some helicopter arrived and guys started jumping out of it.. lucky me with DA18-135 in bag...

Liked your video very much. I agree that a superzoom has its place and they can be very useful. The only obvious question is why you don't have the Olympus 14-150, which is very similar. Was this a deliberate choice (the Lumix one) or just you got a good price on the Lumix, perhaps? Just wondering.

I've used ~10x super zooms since the original "Bigma" sigma 50-500 I can't say I'm a big fan but I can see the appeal I have the gen II of this lens and it is one of my least used lenses as I prefer primes and fast zooms with two bodies but when it gets used it has been a useful and versatile tool when I need to pack minimally
@markellsworth4194Ай бұрын
Whoo... There are things we are supposed to say, that "the compromises imposed by the optics of zoom lenses are more difficult, the broader the range." In the "pro zoom" lenses, the 3x is most common, and with the exception of aperture, they perform to excellent expectations. I would confess, I thought about it for a long time before I opted for the Tamron 14-150mm, 10.7x, favoring the quick focus motors and the company's long experience contending with zoom compromise. Truth is, I tend to shoot most often with the "Trinity" primes on an EM5-MkIII. The times I have taken out the long zoom, I have have not come away disappointed, neither blown away, better than merely satisfied. If we are pleased to call this class "travel zooms," for when we wish to pack "light" I tend more to think there are just some days when you want to go for a long walk with a camera, kinda lazy-shit mode, and not come home with self reviews, that the shots were a waste of time. Every good shot you get, is a shot you did not have.

I picked up the Mark ii for a song just to try it out. I was stunned at how good it is (and I have an arsenal of lenses to compare to). Sharp across the range, excellent resolution, compact, light, image stabilized and weather sealed. If I had to get rid of all of my lenses and only have one, this is it.

Can that one lens do it all WELL? NOPE. I don't know "any" Super Zooms that can do all that. Lens manufacturers would go bankrupt if they made one lens that will rule them all. LOL
