I have shared many tips and tricks on Olympus OM-D cameras previously, mostly on popularly used features. This time, let's dive into less frequently used camera features that some people may not even know that they exist, or they can do some of these tricks with their Olympus cameras. While these are rarely used, some of the features may be useful in certain shooting scenarios.
0:37 - Lightbox Preview
2:25 - Turn Off LCD Screen Completely
3:47 - Depth of Field Preview
6:11 - Test Picture
8:27 - Diopter Adjustment Dial for EVF
For each of the features mentioned I have also demonstrated how to find them in your Olympus camera and how to activate or turn them off.

I saw Lightbox in the Olympus menu, but didn't understand its use, until you explained it perfectly. Testshot what a nonsense! ...but in flash situations!? ...yes its definitly faster, than shoot and delete (less button-clicks) Your context to some of the functions is so enlightning. ...and will never be found on paper in a manual. ...therefore, thank you so much!

Thanks Robin. I wear glasses and so discovered the diopter correction early. I don't know how I could do without it. I also used to assign the DoF preview button to peaking but since getting an EM1-II that has two front buttons I have started setting the top button to peaking and leaving the bottom button as DoF preview. Using both is very useful when taking close up shots without the need to bracket aperture where depth of field is limited.

A nice set of tips, for me the light box was a good one but could you go over it in more detail. I tried to work out a work flow below, but it probably is not the best way, and what other things can you do from the light box view. Can you mark the right image for protection etc. All I could work out was how to add the deletion flag. From what I can see these are the steps 1) find an image you want to compare 2) go to light box view, the selected image with be in the left pane 3) use front dial or < > on D pad to scroll to the image you want to compare in the right panel 4) Use read dial to magnify both images at once 5) press Fn1 to get scroll arrows on right image 6) scroll the right image to where you want it to line up with left pane image 7) press Fn1 again to get scroll bars on the left pane as well 8) use left and right D pad buttons to scroll both images together To flag an image to delete, press "rec" button to tick the image on the right pane I could not see how to protect am image from the light box view

Robin Wong Maybe it’s just because the camera is getting old. It’s the original M5, so it has 8 years on the clock now. And the bag is a billingham with soft fabric inside with a tendency to get any kind of movable switch out of position.

A feature not discussed is manual focus magnification using tele lenses, the amount is adjustable, high like 7X is very hard to use for a bird in the sky and changing to 2-3X can only be done when magnification is active. Move the manual focus ring to activate, then move the rear wheel to change it.

1. Lightbox I have found it, but i prefer simply to zoom in and check single shots. 2. Turning off the screen On M5 Mk III i simply close the LCD. On M10 which has tilting LCD its more useful. I did that once by accident. BTW M5 Mk III got a very useful firmware update. When the LCD is fully opened (eg. on the left from the camera), eye sensor on EVF is disabled. 3. Depth of field preview I am oldschool photographer and my vintage Practica LTL 3 has similar feature. On M10 i even changed WB balance button to have this feature, on M5 Mk III Its perfect for portrait prime lenses with narrow DOF. 4. Test Picture I would not mind keeping the image, mainly if i do reports/party photography. I also keep histogram/EXIF data from the location in this manner, so i can just check the settings and use them in the future. 5. -1 diopter on my left eye, -3 on right :D

I never used the picture compare function. I do all my comparing, if necessary, at my computer. I frequently turn off the display, but only using the display flipping method. Actually, the DoF preview is one of the functions I use frequently on my camera. I didn't know the test shot function, and I haven't missed it at all so far. The diopter adjust function is a bit controversial to me. I do wear glasses, and if I have the diopter setting adjusted to my eyesight, I always need to take my glasses off before I look through the viewfinder. That is very cumbersome, so if I need to look through the EVF, I just do it with the glasses on without prior modifying the diopter. Since that is somewhat awkward to, I normally compose and focus via the display. For me, the EVF is only a backup for special circumstances.

I am going to suggest that the Test Picture option is a terrible idea for one main reason. What happens if you take a test shot and for whatever reason the photo is just fantastic and can't be easily recreated (for example, photographing a baby and they make the most perfect face during the test shot or you catch your dog in mid bite as they try to grab a fly out of the air that was passing by or that weird thing happening in the background at the park). Now this perfect shot is just sitting there mocking you on the LCD screen. At best you can whip out your mobile phone and take a photo of the LCD screen. Heck, the shot doesn't even have to be remarkable or perfect. It might simply be "that is actually a good shot of what I wanted. Storage is cheap and most of us usually have 100s if not 1000s of photos worth of space on our SD cards at any given time. If you are really that hard up for storage, then simply take the shot to check your settings and then simply delete it afterwards if it isn't a keeper.

I enable Lightbox but I use it maybe one or two time. DOF preview? I used MF with focus peaking so I can see DOF and don't need DOF preview. Test picture? If I must first reprogram one button and then shot test picture faster is shot normal picture and saw it with play button, isn't it? I also have a glasses so I must adjust EVF to see sharp pictures.

Thanks for the hidden features. I was using Dof preview on my em5 but changed to focus peaking. I had the feeling that it changes the aperture as well because the screen was getting darker. but just checked the em1 and focus peaking does not impact the aperture. 😭

Hi Robin. Re the Depth of Field preview button. I've noticed that when this is depressed then the highlight warning becomes more widespread. E.g if I reduce shutter speed (one third increments) till the highlight warning disappears and then depress the DoF preview button then some areas of 'warning' will re-appear. Do you know why the camera does this (my EM-1 mkii and EM1 mki exhibit this)?

Hi Robin. I find the dioptre wheel on most models, too stiff to turn accurately. Have you any advice on that please? Howie

Thanks for your videos! I love Olympus tips series. I have em-10 III with only two fn buttons available to me( So far I installed on them peaking and af/mf switch. But I really want to have depth of field preview as well. Is there a way to program one more button or maybe is depth of field available on some other button as well?

Lightbox is an amazing feature. Use “OK” to replace the image on the left and use the shutter scroll wheel to compare the new “favorite” image to other. Thanks Robin!

Great video Robin. You help people understand their cameras and how to use what Oly gives them. I would like to add one more function. Focus limiter in m5, m1, m1x. I think this feature is forgotten in a mirrorless world and not used often. No reviewer mention this in any test. This is a huge mistake. This is an extremely helpful feature and it can also increase our efficiency in shooting sport, wildlife and more. Only fuji xpro3 got focus limter. It has been available on Olympus cameras for a long time.

Focus limiter is not unpopular, and it is quite a new feature available only from E-M1 Mark II onward. I've mentioned it in my Focusing tips video for OM-D. It isn't fair to place it here, as all above features are applicable to most Olympus cameras, not just the flagship.

Having been using Olympus cameras since the E-P1, I can't imagine someone using a E-M1x having never used an Olympus camera before. The menu only makes sense if you have had a lot of experience with it. There are like 10x more menu options on the big cameras.

You said that ea h of the letters in the cog menu stands for a set of topics. Is this written down somewhere, it would be so useful for using the menu system. Thanks and stay safe.

In iAuto can't use back button focusing. Em5 m² focus staking menu is grey out, any chance getting it to work?
@robinwong
@robinwong 4 жыл бұрын
When the camera is set to iAuto, the camera defaults most of it's settings to be "idiot-proof". I don't think a beginner who starts out on photography and got a new camera, using auto mode would know or want to use back button focus. That is a little unrealistic to expect such implementation. If your focus stacking is greyed out, most likely the lens you used is not supported. Check Olympus website for lenses that are compatible with in camera focus stacking.
@nitehawk86
@nitehawk86 4 жыл бұрын
The iAuto setting is entirely superfluous once you figure out how to use the camera. Just go with *Program* if you really want both aperture and shutter speed set automatically. They are the same without the dumbing down of the other camera features. Even then, I almost never use P. A and S are just much more useful modes.
